Richard Walton Gwin and Nancy Elizabeth Watkins . |

Signature of Richard Walton Gwin on the 9 March
1857 receipt of his portion of the inheritance on the document--dated
"Tuesday 3rd April AD 1855"--probating the will at the death
of his mother, Mary Canterbury Gwin. Evidently
Richard lived far enough away that he could not attend the
probate settlement, waiting almost two years for his portion.

To
find their graves, ask anyone
in town how to get to the cemetery. Upon
arriving, find this thirty-foot- high statue of a
Union soldier facing north (left photo).
A short road leads north from the statue and tees
into another going east and west (center photo).
Just across this second road are the Richard Gwin
plot and the Silas Gwin
plot. Down the second road (to the east) is a
third plot, that of Richard's grandson, Albert
Wells.
|
This is the monument of Richard W. Gwin and Nancy Gwin. The grave of their son-in-law, E. T. Wells, is also located in their plot. Ezra T. Wells was a shoemaker and justice of the peace, and his son Albert was a pharmacist here in Neodesha, KS, and the [Osage] Indian nation. --- Cordelia Conner "Cordi" Fischer --- "Sacred to the Memory of Father and Mother" -- inscription on west side, above, center |

[John M. Gwin Note: In July 2006, Cousin Cordelia Fisher sent me photocopies of the news item and obituaries I have transcribed here in this purple, all of which appeared in the Neodesha Register, Neodesha, Kansas. The last item was dated Friday, July 10, 1885. An unrelated legal notice on the same page as the R. W. Gwin obituary was dated Neodesha, Kan., Jan. 15, 1885. See more from Cordelia below.]Mrs. E. T. Wells has been called twice of late to the bedside of her aged father, R. W. Gwin, living near Independence, who is not expected to live. He is 82 years of age. [Cordelia Fischer Note: This is Eliza T. Gwin, wife of Ezra T. Wells.][John M. Gwin Note: Cordelia also sent me a photocopy of a typed transcription (of what appears to me to be page 82) of a "Marriage Register, cont." which is labeled in someone's hand, "Harrison Co., IN, Marriages, 1817-32". I have transcribed here the last entry on this page.]R. W. Gwinn (sic), father of Mrs. E. T. Wells, was buried in the Neodesha cemetery last Friday. He was a resident of Sycamore Valley and was aged 82 years. He had been a pioneer in the settlement of four territories, Indiana, Illinois, Iowa, and Kansas, and was the father of fifteen children, fourteen of whom are living; his wife, whom he had lived with 63 years, is still living but was too much prostrated by the death of her companion to be able to attend the burial. The old pioneers are passing away and will soon live only in the memories of their children.
E. T. Wells received on last Monday a dispatch from Kansas City telling of the death of his motherinlaw, Mrs. Nancy Gwinn (sic), in that city. Mrs. Wells, who has been absent for some time, was with her mother at the time of her death. It has been but a short time since we chronicled the death of Mr. Gwinn (sic), husband of the deceased. May peace and salvation be there.

Age: 80-11-6
Died: 1/7/1885Nancy Gwin (Wife of R. W.)
Age: 78-3-21
Died: 7/6/1885Mary E. Gwin
Born: 1848
Died: 1931Earl Gwin:
Age: 1 yr., 6 mo.
Died: 1/15/1881
(Son of Mary)These people were buried on the north half of a lot that had a large, family monument in the middle of the lot. The name on the stone was Wells.
An E. T. Wells was buried there. (10/17/1883 - 7/3/1904) The lot was bordered by a concrete bordering with the name of Gwin on it. I don't know if the Wells were related.Sincerely,

Martha--"Marthy"--is the oldest child
still at home in Sep of 1850. She will marry a
neighbor, William
Snyder, who is living in residence 622. The four oldest children have each married and/or are living elsewhere: 1. Mary
and Gideon
Bear are living next door (res. 662);
2. William is still single and unaccounted-for, but his soon-to-be bride, Catherine Bush, is living with her parents four doors away (res. 659); 3. Jane and Jehu Haigler are unaccounted-for but probably nearby; and 4. Sarah and Enoch Haigler are three doors from them (res. 660). (Res. 661 is the home of William and Elizabeth Haigler, in their late 60's, who are probably Enoch's and Jehu's parents.) |

BINGO! On
a

that
Caroline,

living

would
be
married
and
living near her parents, I did an Ancestry.com
search of the 1870 census of
Stanton/Miami/Kansas for any female by
the first name of Caroline. There were
only three, and this one is (1)
exactly ten years older than our
Caroline was in 1860,
Maybe this doesn't prove
she's our Caroline, but I am personally
convinced this is she.(2) b. in Iowa, and (3) living 3 doors from her parents and 2 from her brother! Further, (4) in 1880 she gives her parents' POB as TN and KY, respectively! |

I'm more and
more convinced that this M. V. is our
Martin V. Gwin, son of Richard W. and
Nancy Gwin. Even though his age
is 2-3 years off, and the places of
birth of his parents are unfortunately
left blank, Barton Co., MO, is right
across the state line from Crawford
Co., KS--fairly near Richard W.'s
farm. Most convincing, however, is our
finding of a widow, Isabelle
Thornburgh, 27, and her son Thomas,
7, living right here in Barton Co.,
MO! Our Martin V. won't marry Isabelle, his second wife, for some two more years, so this "Parley" (Paralee?) could be a daughter by Mary Butcher, his first wife, once thought to be deceased, now known to be living in Arkansas City, Kansas, in Cowley Co., some 100+ miles to the west of Crawford Co. However, Parley's POB is listed as Arkansas, and her father's POB is listed as Iowa--consistent with M. V. being her father, but meaning that she would've been born in Arkansas, then moved to Missouri. |

If
this is a daughter, and she looks to
be (but the "Relation to HoH" column
is unfortunately blank), the whole
family would've been living in
Arkansas when she was born. When the
family split up, she and Martin could
have gone one way (to Barton Co., MO)
while Mary went the other (to
Cowley Co., KS) with Dora and Effie.
Where Leonadus went is anyone's guess,
but since he is with neither in 1880,
he is likely deceased. Could Parley's name be Paralee? How many children did Martin have? So far, we have Dora, Leonodus, Parley, and Effie. |

Aha. This is
Martin's first wife, Mary Butcher, and

Martin and she are clearly

The POB of his
parents pretty much nails this down,
as far as I'm concerned, as the son of
Richard W. Gwin. Their "Years of
Marriage" being 19, that sets their
marriage at ca. 1881. The record of
his age has been written over several
times and is not legible, but based on
the 1910 and 1920 censuses, it must be
52 or 53. |

Everything
matches up with his marriage
certificate (above) to prove that this
is the former husband of Effie Gwin
(Mrs. Joseph Fallihee), with the
possible exception of his number of
marriages. One can track his
migration through the first marriage
certificate (above)
and the places of birth of his
children here: Minnesota,
Washington, Oregon, and California. |

CA/MN/PA | I believe this
to be Anna "Annie" Gladys
Fallihee who will
marry Carl Elwood Fryer and become
Daniel Nietz's great-grandmother.
However, there are some inaccuracies
reported here. Either the enumerator
incorrectly assumed that Annie is
Nellie's child or Nellie lied outright
to him, for Annie is NOT her child and
is indeed the child of Joseph by his
first wife, Effie Gwin, as proven by
her presence in the 1900 census.
Further, her age reported here is
incorrect, as onre can see when
comparing her age in 1900 to hers in
1910. Here's what I SPECULATE happened: The enumerator arrived at the Fallihee home during the daytime hours when Joseph was at work and the older kids were at school. Further, he was taking notes in a notebook, planning to transcribe them into the official census report that evening. Nellie gave him the information as accurately as she could, but the enumerator failed to ask if any of the children were by a former marriage. Later, when he was trying to transcribe his notes, he realized that Annie's age could not be 12 if Joseph and Nellie had only been married 7 years, so he assumed her age to be two and recorded it so, further listing Annie's mother's POB as PA. |

Isabell is 67
here, which means that she would've been
about 38 or 39 when she married Martin
in about 1881 or 1882. It is very
possible, then, that she may have have a
child or children by him. It is perhaps
more probable that she may have had at
least one child, Thomas,
by a previous marriage (see below). |

It now appears
that the second of the above scenarios
is correct. In the 8 Jun 1880 census of
Ozark Township, Barton Co., MO, I found
the widow Isabelle Thornburgh, 27,
and her son Thomas,
7, living as housekeeper and boarder,
respectively, in the home of a widower
with three small children. I'm betting
this grandson is the son of this Thomas
and therefore a "step-grandson" of
Martin. |

This must be Effie

a nickname for Ellen. She is my second
cousin thrice removed. HOWEVER, if this
Ellen is our Effie, she certainly was not
born in Pennsylvania, nor were her parents
born in Wisconsin! THEREFORE, for now, we
must assume that (1) either this Ellen is
a second wife and that Effie was the
first, or (2) this is the wrong family. |
