SECTION TWO
Squire Houston
and
Nancy Gwin
of Brown Co., Illinois

These
photos were taken in Jun 2010 at the Benville
Cemetery, Brown Co., Illinois, by John M. Gwin.
To get there from St. Louis,
we followed the Mississippi River north on the
Missouri side and crossed at Quincy, IL. We
took Adams County Road 104 due east from Quincy,
staying on it as we crossed I-172 about a mile
outside town. Counting from that junction, it
was right at 25 more miles continuing east into
Brown County. Then we turned right and headed
south on Brown Co. Road #450 about five more miles
until we saw first the cemetery sign, above, then
the church. The cemetery is beautifully
maintained, but while several of Squire's and
Nancy's children are buried there, there was no sign
of Squire or Nancy. There were, however,
several graves that were unmarked or missing stones,
so perhaps they're buried there also. |

Rai Richardson found this quote from an old history of Brown Co., IL:
From Gallda.com:
The settler was John B. Houston, a brother-in-law of William L. Dehart. He came the 1st of April, of the same year, and located on the northeast quarter of the same section. Mr. Houston was also from the same county in Kentucky, and came to this state in 1831, and stopped for a short time in Morgan county. He and Dehart came from there to La Grange together. He had a family of eight children, six of whom are yet living, none of them, however, in Brown county. His daughter Sarah, born January 8th, 1838, was the first birth that occurred in the township. Houston left here in 1847, and subsequently moved to Missouri, where he died. ..."Squire and Uriah Houston, brothers of John B. Houston, were also early arrivals. Squire Houston came from his native State to Morgan Co in 1830, and to Brown with his brother John B. in 1833, locating at La Grange. In 1838 he purchased and settled on land in section twenty-two. About 1845 he traded his place for the Kerragan mill, on section thirty-four, which he operated until 1852. He died March, 1882, in the eighty-second year of his age. He reared a large family. Isaac, Uriah, John, Isom G., and Minerva, wife of P. G. Butler, are living in the township, and Malinda, wife of Silas Reeves, resides in Elkhorn.

Ulysses "Grant" Houston, the son of William T. Houston and Elizabeth (Myers) Houston, was married to Elizabeth Georgetta Whiteside. They had at least thirteen children: Wilbur Roy Houston, Lee Ona Houston, Arlie Houston, Charlie Houston, Delbert C. Houston, Velma Houston, Dean Houston, Ina Houston (Morgan), Mona Houston (Hughes), Lyle "Sonny" Houston, Cletus Houston, William Houston, and an infant who died at age three.
Grant was a man who cherished the Bible. He was a theological student in Manhattan, Kansas, where he had the opportunity to travel to Israel with Dr. Talmage's tour. While he was there, he was proud to be baptized in the Jordon River. Before this, Grant studied to enter Yale University. During that time, October of 1889, he presented Yale with a work of art called "one of the most interesting that it had ever been the writer's good fortune to see". He also patented an "Educational Model of the Universe" which was housed at Northwestern University in Chicago. His granddaughter said she always remembered him with a Bible in his hands.

[JMG Note: When first we discovered him in 2007, this seemed the logical place for him to be, since we had no other descendants of this William P. Houston until tonight. So we tentatively placed him here until we would discover otherwise. What we discovered instead was him again in 1910, living with his brother William T. Houston. This pretty well nailed it down for me that both these men are sons of William P. Houston.];

then, I feel fairly certain that this is our John.)

Squire's and Nancy's Family in the 1850 census of Brown County, IL Name Age John M. Gwin Comments:
Squire Huston 49
Nancy Huston 45
William P Huston 26 William looks to be the oldest child, since his age indicates that Nancy was about 19 when he was born, meaning she was at most 18 when she got married. If she married earlier, then the possibility of another older child does exist.
Sarah Huston 18 The age difference between William and Sarah suggests that several more children--say three to five--could have been born between them. All of these would be of marriable age, so barring tragedy, they are probably all married and living elsewhere. If any of these are male, they should be fairly easy to find in the 1850 census. And depending on how long they've lived in the county, they may all be living right there in Brown County.
Mahalia Huston 16
Minerva Huston 14
John Huston 12
Uriah Huston 10 This Uriah is surely the 24.06 listed above, the photo of whose grave is shown there, too. Was he single all of his life? It certainly looks that way at this point.
Malinda Huston 7
Guinn Huston 5 This is clearly our Isom Guinn Houston. The age difference between him and Thomas allows for one or two more children, so the total possible for Squire and Nancy rounds out to about 12 to 15.
Thomas Huston 0 Thomas is the reason I've placed this chart here: I had no other record of him until I saw him in this census. Whether he appears in another place or not is one of the current questions.

YOBPOB John Gwin's Comments
Squire Houston M 55 1805 KY Squire Houston is likely a widower here, as Nancy is clearly not in the picture.
Minerva Houston F 24 1836 IL Minerva's age here places her birth about fourteen years into the marriage of Squire and Nancy, if the 27 Oct 1822 date I have for their marriage is correct (Jim Wall got it from Ancestry.com). That means there are likely five to eight more unaccounted-for Houstons out there at this point.
Uriah Houston M 19 1841 IL
Malinda Houston F 17 1843 IL
Isam Houston M 15 1845 IL Isom is the youngest child here; Thomas is missing. Perhaps whatever caused Minerva's death caused Thomas' as well.

he just has to be related. I'm learning that
more than one sibling of Squire moved to Illinois,
so this is possibly Squire's brother. |

Hello James, I am the ggg-granddaughter of John B. Houston and Mahala Gwin. I am was very interested to see your posting. Do you have references for primary sources for this info? I am descended from Isham (Isom) whose daughter Rachel Mahala married Marshall Waters. FYI, April 6 is National Tartan Day, and there is a Houston tartan, although it is not historic. I believe it was created in the 70s. The Houstons are my only Scottish line; I think having a tartan is really fun. Hope to hear from you, will be glad to exchange information. And now Cathy writes with more on
her line:
Hi John, Nice to meet you. My
descent is through Mahala and John's son Isom, who
married Sarah Ann Bowen.
Their daughter was Rachel Mahala Houston,
obviously named after her grandmothers, Mahala
Gwin and Rachel Johnson. Rachel Mahala "Haley" married Marshall E. Waters.
Their son Harvey
L. was my grandfather. My
mother got the Rachel but was spared the
Mahala! My grandfather,
Harvey L. Waters,
was first married to Annie Pritchard; they had two
children, Lee Truett and Elizabeth. Annie died, and
he married Lillian
Crosby Jenkins. Their
children were Virginia Ruth and Rachel Juanita. My
parents: Rachel J. Waters
and George D. Hines.
When
I
married
Robert Boulton, I
just added his last name to mine.
Cousin Cathy

The settler was
John B.
Houston, a
brother-in-law of William
L. Dehart. He came the 1st
of April, of the same
year, and located on the
northeast quarter of the
same section. Mr. Houston
was also from the same
county in Kentucky, and
came to this state in
1831, and stopped for a
short time in Morgan
county. He and Dehart came
from there to La Grange
together. He had a family
of eight children, six of
whom are yet living, none
of them, however, in Brown
county. His daughter
Sarah,
born January 8th,
1838, was the first
birth that occurred in
the township. Houston

in
1847,
and
subsequently
moved
to
Missouri, where he died.

"Squire and Uriah Houston, brothers of John B. |

I have an Isaac Huston, wife Elizabeth, and their children. One of the children was Isaac, born 1802 who married Louisa, last name unknown, children unknown. My file shows Isaac born KY. The patriarch Isaac Huston/Houston was born about 1770. His first daughter, Jane, was born 1794 and married my great-great-great grandfather John Stevenson of Hardin County, KY on Sept 11, 18. Isaac lived in Hardin County KY near John Stevenson, and Isaac is buried in Bacon Creek, KY. Several of the family moved through Indiana, to Cass County, Illinois.
Here is what I have:
Descendants of Isaac Houston
1. Isaac1 Houston was born Abt. 1770, and died in Bacon Creek,
Kentucky, USA. He married Elizabeth. She died in Hardin County?,
Kentucky?, USA.
Children of Isaac Houston and Elizabeth are:
2 i. Jane2 Houston, born 1794; died 26 December 1847 in Brown
County, Illinois, USA. She married (1) John Stevenson 22 September
1811 in Hardin Co., Kentucky; born Abt. 1786 in Indiana?; died WFT
Est. 1819-1877. She married (2) William L. Dehart 11 March 1822 in
Harrison Co., IN; born 1801; died 1852 in Brown Co., IL.
Marriage Notes for Jane Houston and William Dehart:
Jane Houston Stevenson marr. DEHART, William * 11-Mar-1822,
Harrison Co., IN from Family Tree Maker Marriages IL & IN.
3 ii. William M. Houston, born 1798. He married Sarah Gwin 28 November 1820 in
Harrison County, IN.
4 iii. Rachel Houston, born Abt. 1800. She married Zachariah Downs
09 September 1817 in Jeffersonfville, Clark Co., IN.
5 iv. Squire Houston, born 1800; died March 1882
in Brown County(?), Illinois, USA. He married Nancy Gwin 27 October 1822 in
Orange Co, Indiana; born Abt. 1805.
6 v. Isaac Houston, born 1802 in Kentucky. He married Louisa.
7 vi. John B. Houston, born 1805 in KY; died 1861.
He married (1) Mahala C.; born 1808 in Tennessee; died 1880 in
Iowa. He married (2) Mahala C. Gwin.

23.09--Nancy Gwin, b. 1805; m. [27 Oct 1822 in Orange Co., IN (see below)] Squire Houston; [JMG Note: In Isham's will, he clearly leaves two shares of his estate to two Hustons--Squire and J. E.--who are likely brothers who have married two of Isham's daughters. Since these are the only two daughters on our list of Isham's children unaccounted for in the will, it appears to me that these two sisters, Nancy and Sarah married those two Huston brothers. Which brother married which sister was not clear in the will; however Doris Gyarmati and several others have it that Nancy indeed married Squire--but Doris has that Sarah m. In Reply to: Jesse Houston Kentucky 1810 by William Charles W. Houston
Posting no. 3304 of 3936William, I am currently trying to sort out the members of the Houston family who left Hardin Co., KY, and moved to Crawford Co., IN and Brown and Adams Cos., IL. I have been focussing on Jesse Houston and Squire Houston primarily because I feel that Aaron Burr Houston and George W. Houston of Putnam Co., MO (in the 1860's and later) were brothers or half-brothers and sons of either Jesse (the younger) or Squire. A newspaper clipping concerning George W. Houston, written in the 1880's, states he was born in Crawford Co., IN and that "While quite young his parents moved to Adams County, IL." I find Jesse Houston in the 1830 census of Crawford Co., IN (age 40-50) who must be the elder Jesse. He was listed as Jessee Husten in the 1820 Hart Co., KY census (formerly part of Hardin Co. I find the family of Squire Houston and his wife Nancy Guin in Brown Co., IL in 1830, 1840, and 1850.
I have searched the Hardin Co., KY tax lists and find that Jesse Huston was taxed for the first time in 1804 and Andrew Huston's first listing is in 1794. Have you been able to find any record that tells us that Andrew was the father of Jesse? Do you know where the family was prior to 1804?

(The following is copied from page 309 of "History of Morgan County, Illinois, 1878" and refers to
the "Sudden Freeze" of Dec. 20, 1836.)
"Daniel Clark says, 'The change occurred in the afternoon about two o'clock. There was snow on the ground, saturated with a slow rain, so that it had commenced running in the low places. I was on the north side of Indian Creek, just entering the timber with a drove of hogs. I was assisted by two men on foot; I was on horseback. One of the men was Uriah Houston, the other, Isaac Drinkwater. At the house of the father of the latter I had stayed the night before. The hogs belonged to Ralph H. Hurlbut, who lived at the time at La Grange Point, and was packing some hogs at La Grange Landing. He had a boat for ferrying, and a lot to keep hogs in on the east side of the river. We reached the river about dark, and penned the hogs; the wind was high, and the slush loaded on the boat so much that we could not cross with my horse. Mr. Drinkwater went home, his father's house being the first one on the east side of the river, distant about seven miles. My home was at Mr. Hurlbut's from which I had been absent for several days. It was a good home, and I was hungry, and about nine o'clock p.m. there came a clear place in the river; I hitched my horse in the shelter of a pecan tree that had been felled with the leaves on, and got into a canoe with two paddles and an ax to reach my home. The ice formed fast on the canoe, and I had frequently to clear it off with the ax, until I got under the lee of the west bank; then it went free, in which free water I froze my left hand seriously. In the morning following I went to feed my horse, and found the river so solidly frozen that I rode him across and had him in the stable before sunrise, and immediately after got some teams and hauled sawdust form Hinman's mill, and made a path to the opposite bank, and drove the hogs across and had them in the lots on the opposite side. There were about three hundred of them; they had been purchased from Peter Taylor, Isaac Houston, George Newman, Wingate Newman, and others. I landed from the open water after 10 o'clock p.m., and my recollection would make the ice the next morning one foot thick."

John:
I am interested in communicating with you about what might be joint family lines.
I saw the obit, which follows, on your webpage. I am curious as to what piqued your interest. Clara Houston was my aunt and Mary Lee (Houston) Potts is my mother. See further below for continuation of this e-mail.
"Clara Elizabeth Houston, 83, of Martinsville, died Sunday, March 30, 2003, at Universal Health Care in Raleigh, N.C. You may be the answer to the brick wall in a family lineage, which several of our family members have attempted to answer for the last few years. This in regards to my maternal grandfather. Your research could be the answer to his origins.
Recent checks in my DNA line and other family trees have pointed toward the Houstons in Brown County, IL. I am searching primarily for Walter Henry Houston and his father William (C.) Houston. I have found references to both names in the Brown County lines. If this proves true out, I believe I know the ancestors to Isaac Houston and his descendants. This I would be willing to share with you. Do you have any information about Walter or William?
My mother is elderly and the last of Walter's 10 children. She would be very appreciative to learn about her father and his ancestors. My grandfather died when my mother was 9 months old. He was very secretive about his family, apparently, because of a major falling out and did not what to be found by his family.
I hope to continue communicating with you and will share any and all of my findings.
Thank you very much,
Dave Potts

information on the Houston family. I am researching
William DeHart and Jane Stevenson. Two websites I've
found extremely helpful are: http://www.ilsos.gov/GenealogyMWeb/marrsrch.html for Illinois marriages and http://208.119.135.17/db/in_marriages_1850/marriages_search.asp for Indiana marriages. |

Generation No. 2
2. Jane2 Houston (Isaac1) was born 1794, and died 26 Dec 1847. She married William Leland Dehart 14 Mar 1822 in Harrison Co, IN, son of William Leland Dehart. He was born 1798 in Hart Co, KY, and died 26 Oct 1852 in Buckhorn Twp, IL. They are buried in Dehart Cemetery, Buckhorn Twp, Brown Co, IL. "The first permanent resident of Buckhorn township was William L. Dehart, a native of Hart Co, KY. He came to Illinois in 1832, locating in Morgan Co, where he remained until February, 1833, and on the sixth day of March, in the same year, moved to La Grange, in this Co, Indiana 1837 he moved with his family to Buckhorn, settling in the northwest quarter of section 33, on the place now owned by James Lewis. Mr. Dehart had been here before, and had erected a small, rough, hewed log cabin, about sixteen feet square, with roof of clap-boards, and mother earth floor. On the night of the arrival at their new abode, it snowed to a depth of about six inches, and grew quite cold. They built a large fire in one end of the cabin against the green logs, the smoke curling out through the openings between the logs of the side of the cabin, or clap-boards in the roof, there being neither fireplace nor chimney. This rude structure, in a wilderness on that cold, stormy night, was a palace to them. It is related that during the first summer the Deharts lived here, that they killed over forty copperhead and rattle snakes in the immediate vicinity of their cabin, it seemingly having been built over a den of these reptiles. Dehart reared a family of four sons and four daughters, five of whom are yet living, viz.: Thomas B., Julius W., in Nebraska; Malinda Jane, wife of Lewis Flinn, in Adams Co; Mary, wife of Daniel Comer, in Adams Co; and Thomas, who resides on section thirty of Buckhorn, who is the only representative of the family now in the county. He is an extensive farmer, has been justice of the peace for eight years, and held other minor offices, and is among the prominent and influential gentleman of the county. Houston left here in 1847, and subsequently moved to Missouri, where he died. ... "Squire and Uriah Houston, brothers of John B. Uriah Houston moved from KY to IL in 1831, and located in Buckhorn in 1839, and still resides on section twenty-six, where he is interested in farming and operating a steam mill. ... "He [Henry Jerroll] erected his cabin on the line separating Brown Co from Pike Co, Indiana 1838 he exchanged farms with John B. Houston, and became a citizen of Brown, and in 1843 moved to the State of Missouri. Two brothers, John and James McDannald, Kentuckians, came here together, landing in Buckhorn between Christmas and New Years of 1838. John had a family of thirteen children, seven of whom came to this Co with him, and only one of them is now living in this State, Nealy McDannald, Sr., residing in section thirteen of Buckhorn. James had a small family, none of whom are now living. Elijah Reeves, a Kentuckian, was a very early settler in the bottom prairie, where he resided for many years, and moved to Elkhorn, where he died. ... "About 1844, he [Abel H. Lamphire] purchased the mill and distillery owned and operated by John B. Houston, and run them in connection with his wheel and chair factory for several years. ..." - History of Schuyler and Brown Counties, IL, W.R. Melinda was buried in Mt. View Cemetery, Pueblo Co, CO. "THOMAS B. DEHART, one of the oldest settlers now living in Buckhorn township, was born in Hart Co, KY, on the 11th of October, 1825 His father was William Dehart. His mothers name before marriage was Jane Houston. In October, 1830, when he was five years old, his father moved with the family from KY to Harrison Co, IN, twenty miles west of New Albany, where they lived till April, 1832, when they emigrated to this state. Their home was on Indian creek in Morgan Co, till February, 1833, when they crossed the IL river on the ice and settled on the bluffs one mile west of La Grange. This was then in Schuyler Co, the Co of Brown not being organized for six years afterward. In the spring of 1837 the family moved to the present Buckhorn township, (two south, range four west) and settled on the northwest quarter of section thirty-three. The cabin which Mr. Dehart's father built is said to have been the first ever erected in Buckhorn township. In 1844 the family moved to section sixteen where William Dehart died in the year 1852. "When the subject of this sketch came to what is now Brown Co he was in his eighth year. He went to school some little in the neighborhood of La Grange and two terms in the southwest part of the Co, but most of his education he obtained after he was grown, in Adams and Pike counties. When he was twenty years old, in 1845, he left home, and for nearly ten years was employed in working on a farm in Pike Co. While living in Pike Co, on the 30th of December, 1852, he married Polly Alisa New, of that Co, IN 1855, he moved to a farm in Beverly township, Adams Co, on which he lived till March, 1865, when he moved to his present farm in section thirty, township two south, range four west. He has been a farmer all his life, and is the owner of one of the best farms in Buckhorn township, composed of two hundred acres of land. His first wife died on the 26th of July, 1871. He had nine children by this marriage, whose names are as follows: William A., now living in MN; Angus N., who died in infancy; Mary Jane, now Mrs. William Leeper; James Alfred, Stephen A., George, who died in infancy; Sarah Catharine, Thomas D., and Minnie A. His present wife, whom he married on the 7th of January, 1872, was Mrs. Malinda Meeks. Her maiden name was Martin. By this marriage he has three children - Barton W., Edgar, and Cora E. Mrs. Dehart had three children by her former marriage - William W. Meeks, Eliza, now the wife of John Bullard, a resident of MN, and Osmer Meeks. "He has always been a member of the Democratic party, and has been one of the strong supporters of that political organization in the southwest part of the Co, IN 1866 and in 1871 he served as collector of Buckhorn township. He was elected Justice of the Peace in 1873 and was re-elected in 1877, serving till 1881. He is now one of the oldest residents of the southwest part of the Co." - History of Schuyler and Brown Counties, IL, W.R. "Julius Woods, One Of Oldest Citizens, Is Dead
"Julius Woods is dead. Life came to an end for this veteran citizen Wednesday night after a short illness. The fact is that Mr. Woods was able to be in Mt. Sterling only a few days ago from his home out on the Pittsfield road and while on his way home was stricken with illness. Since that time he had lingered between life and death until the end came at the time stated.
"Julius Woods was on of Brown county's pioneer citizens. He was born in Buckhorn township, Brown county nearly 88 years ago, and this county has ever since been his home. He was the son of one of the hardy pioneers who blazed the trail of civilization in this section of Illinois. It was on the 20th day of June, 1869, when he and Amanda Reeves, obtained their marriage license in the office of W. C. Perry, then the Brown county clerk, and later on the same day were united in marriage by Justice of the Peace Bartholomew Boylan. They took up their residence on a farm in this county and for many years Mr. Woods was an active tiller of the soil. In recent years they and their son Frank had lived on a farm near Hersman, and there only last summer, surrounded by relatives and friends, the aged couple celebrated the 66th anniversary of their wedding day.
"Mr. and Mrs. Woods became the parents of ten children, nine of whom are living. They are as follows: Mrs. William Twombly, Pueblo, Colorado; John Woods, Cooperstown; Mrs. Agnes Brake, Timewell; Mrs. Luther Rigg, Timewell; Mrs. Ernest Hoover, Mt. Sterling; Mrs. William Feld, Mt. Sterling; Frank Woods, near Hersman; Ed Woods, Timewell; Mrs. James Dunn, Timewell, and Mrs. Susie Brown, deceased. There are also a large number of grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Mrs. Woods, now in her 85th year, has been quite ill herself for the past several days.
"The funeral took place this, Friday, morning at 11 o'clock at the late home, conducted by Rev. McQuary, pastor of the local Christian church, and interrment was made in the family burial lot in the Buckhorn cemetery. Undertaker Rounds was in charge of the funeral.
"Thus another of the oldest and most highly respected citizens of Brown county has been called to his eternal home. He was priviledged to live and enjoy fairly good health for the most part, for a much longer period than the allotted three score years and ten, and together with his faithful helpmate, and surrounded by most of his children, enjoyed life in the fullest. He was a man of high character, beloved by his famly, and held in the highest estimation of his fellowmen - what more could be said of any man?&quuot; - The Democrat-Message; Mt. Sterling, Brown Co, IL; 28 Mar 1936, p1
