Some Great Communication

Here's an e.mail from  Mr. Howard Boswell.  I organized the information in it resulting in the start of the Gatewood Page, above.

First of all, these Boswells of Spotsylvania Va. are not my Boswell's, but I have collected Boswell data for over 25 years, so have a lot of stuff unrelated.

Found a book, " John and Amy Gatewood and their Descendants 1666-1986 by Gothberg, 1987.
William Gatewood b ca 1720 Essex Co Va. married Ann , widow of John Boswell, 1742 Spotsylvania Co Va. He lived also in Albemarle Co Va.   Ann, daughter of ( possibly Richard Ransom of Gloucester Co Va.)
  Children of William and Ann.
1. William b 1743 Spotsylvania co. Will proved 3 Jan 1789 Amherst Co Va. Married Sarah Foster (1st cousin) by 1770, dau of Thomas and Dorothy (Gatewood)Foster.
2. Austin b ca 1745 Spotsylvania Co, other than mention in grandfathers will 1777 no further record.
3. Ambrose b ca 1747 Spotsylvania Co, died 1801-5, Amherst Co Va. 6 deeds for Ambrose and Margaret, In Amherst Co between 1772-1801. married about 1765 Amherst Co.
4. Possible dau Jane b 1758 Albemarle Co Va. died Mar 9 1823 (age 65) near Benton, Franklin Co Ill. Married James Matten Early, July 1780, Albemarle Co va. James b 1753 Westmoreland Co va. d 1897 Fincastle Co Va.
5  and 2 more possible daughters Nancy Ann and Elizabeth.

Will Book E 1772-1798  Gatewood, Henry, Spotsylvania Co dated  Jan 28 , 1777, Executors bond dated Dec 18 1777. Witnesses Edward Herndon, Edmund Foster, John Frazer, Henry Crutcher, Anthony Frazer.  Executor Richard Gatewood son, Legatees wife Tabitha, sons Dudley and Henry; son William and Ann his wife and their sons William,Austin, and Ambrose Gatewood; sons Peter, Larkin, and Richard gatewood; dau Keziah Sandidge; dau Dorothy Foster.

Will Book A 1772-1749    Boswell ,John, St George's Parish (Spotsylvania Co va ) dated Jan 10 1740, proved May 5 1741 proved on the oath of William Bicknell who wrote the said will for the said John Boswell. Ex. wife Ann Boswell. Legatees eldest daughter Dorothy, youngest Frances, sons Ransom, George, and James Boswell, 980 acres of land to be equally divided among the above named children, my younger children to be educated. I desire that the court may bind my three eldest sons when they arrive at the age of fifteen years to the following trades. --- Ransom and John to a Joyner & Carpenter and George to a Blacksmith.

Spotsylvania Co va. Records by Crozier has Deeds from 1734- 1763. Which mention both Boswell  and Gatewood folks. One of which ------
Deed Book C  1740 Joseph Brock of Spotsylvania Co, Gentleman, and Mary his wife, to John Boswell of said Co, planter, 100 pounds  currency, 980 acres in Spotsylvania Co, --Part of patent granted Larkin Chew deceased, Jun 4 1723, repatented by said Brock, Sept 12 1723, witnessed by, R.Curtis,Ann Curtis, Mary Lynes  May 6 1740.

The Ransom/Ransome family ---- Peter Ransome patented land in Gloucester, now Mathews Co Va. apparently Kingston Parish. He had a son George  who left partof this land to his daughter Elizabeth ( Ransome) Dudley, Elliott. who married Joseph Boswell of Lunenburg Co Va., as her 4th husband.    So the Ransom and Boswell families are intermarried more than once.  The Richard Ransom, said father of Ann (Ransom ) Boswell. I have nothing on than I can see right now.

According to my records Ann Ransom b. 1710 married John Boswell in 1728. John died in 1740/41 and left her with six small children.
In 1742 she married William Gatewood in Spotsylvania County. To this union were born three children: Austin, Ambrose and William Jr.
Ann's parents were Peter and Doroty Horth of Ware Point in Gloucester.
Ann and William later moved to Amerherst County, Virginia. She died around 1785 I think. Hope this may help.

In June 2010, Cousin Mary Giera contacted me with more data. Following is her correspondence.

Mary, I'm so glad you enjoyed the pages.  Thanks for the kind words.

How and through whom are we related?

Best to you,
In Jesus,
John

John, here's how you and I are 6th cousins once removed:
My line: Mary, Mary, Mary, Wesley, Virginia, Lucy,  William,   William,  William Gatewood
Your line:         John. Dot,     Mack,     John,   Milly, Ransom Ambrose, William Gatewood

Three of my four grandparents were family historians.  They spent their vacations for 40 years tromping around in old cemeteries, visiting courthouses, libraries, etc.  I inherited all of their pages of notes.  My mother is still actively climbing the family tree.
I've been doing family research for over 35 years - initially working from their notes and putting them into Family Tree Maker, my computer genealogy program.
I'm hoping to verify what I have and to extend the family lineage by contacting as many cousins as I can locate.  So glad to have found you!
