River", pp. 150-51 (transcribed from the Googlebooks PDF by

ENGLISH RIVER
It was settled early,
there was plenty of brush and water, and folk eagerly sought the region
and settled before the land was surveyed, and there was a great deal of
violence resulting from jumping claims. Cyrus Cox and Stephen and
Jonathan Bunker came in '39, and by 1840 George O'Loughlin, Addison
Williams, David Bunker, S. B. Cooper, B. Creswell, Paddy Connolly,
Gideon Bear, Wm. Shaw, Daniel Bunker, John and Joel Tyler and Joshua
Williams, Eli H. Adams, Pressley Figgens. Between 1840 and '46
there was a heavy consignment of settlers--Wm. Gwinn and his sisters,
Mesdames Mary Bear, Martha Snyder, and Elizabeth Adams; Absalom Bush,
J. F. Hamilton, Ephraim Adams, John S. Mapel, Peter Sharp, the Bailey
family, Wm Britton, Michael Wee, John Schillig of Alsace, Brantly Bray
and Austin, Madison Lauder, and W. B. Kerr, J.P., one of the the
shrewdest men in the county history, a modest, quiet man with a keen
sense of humor, full of dry fun and possessed of the liveliest
appreciation of the odd people around. It may be truly said that
in that first decade every body had a distinct flavor of inidviduality;
no two persons suggested each other; each was distinct, going it on his
own judgment, not leaning on any one or imitating any body. Good
specimens of what I mean were Gideon Bear, Peter Sharp, and especially
C. C. Hasty. He came when he was nineteen years young, one of ten
children, breezy, vivacious, humorous, original. By the bye, his
claim is still in the family, the only one in English River township of
which that may be said."The civil township is larger than the congressional. There were territorial local officers before the civil ones had been elected in April 1840. So many came and came so fast, organization was a necessity. In 1853 there were cast one hundred and forty-three votes, and in 1875 the population was one thousand four hundred and thirty-one. The township had outstripped Crawford and Brighton and stood second to Washington. Jonathan Bunker and Mary Randall were the first wedded pair, 'Squire Gillam tying the knot in '42, and the next candidates for bliss were Mr. Gilcrist and Cynthia Tyler. Rebecca Cox was born in '40 and Abe Bunker in '41. |
Directly below is a copy of an
1859 Plat Map of English River Township, Washington Co., IA, sent in by my cousin, Pat Critz, in May 2012. INTRODUCTION
For the benefit of readers
who may not know, a township is a six-mile square of land containing 36
square miles. Each of these square miles is called a
"section". The 36 sections are always numbered starting in the
northeast corner of the township with Section 1. Section 2 is
immediately to the west, continuing west through sections 3, 4, 5, and
6. Section 7 is immediately south of section 6, then the sections
are numbered to the east with 8 through 12. This back-and-forth
pattern continues until section 36 is reached in the southeast corner
of the township. In the map below, I used red ink to highlight
the borders of each section and to circle each of the 36 section
numbers.
Each section contains 640 acres. Half a section, then, is 320 acres, and a quarter section is 160 acres. A quarter of a quarter section is 40 acres. Find section 1 in the map below. Can you see that the northeast quarter section (160 acres) belonged to someone whose name appears to be John Wembarker (if i'm reading it correctly)? The southeast quarter section belonged to a John Jegge. In the northwest quarter section, S. Deitz owned the top 80 acres, and two people with the initials T. F. and J. M. owned the bottom two 40-acre plots. The southwest quarter section was subdivided into four forty-acre plots, one of which was owned by the same T. F., two of which were owned by a J. S., and one of which was evidently unowned. SOME POINTS OF INTEREST
With that introduction, several
landmarks can be readily seen:

BEAR, GIDEON, farmer; Sec. 31; P. O. Richmond; was born in Lehigh county, Pennsylvania, August 7, 1810, where he was raised a farmer, which occupation he bas followed all his life; at the age of twenty-eight he became convinced that the west offered better opportunities to a poor man, and with $20, all the money he had accumulated since becoming of age, turned his face westward; coming to Indiana he got out of funds, where he remained nearly two years, when he came to this county, and located where he now resides; his life has been a quiet, persevering, effort to build for himself and family a comfortable home; his farm consists of 530 acres under fine improvements; his success is attributable in a great measure to his excellent wife, who has ever been a constant helpmate; September 12, 1841, Miss Mary Gwin, a native of Harrison county, Indiana, became his wife; they have ten children living: Elizabeth (wife of J. W. Sterling), Samuel R., Margaret A, (wife of J. W. Coffman), Richard, Nancy (wife of P. Figgins), Wilbur, Clara (wife of R. Turnipseed), Alice (wife of F. Hoag), Martha J., the oldest daughter at home, is a young lady of rare attraction, dutiful to her parents, a jewel fit to adorn any household, and Minora; they have lost four children: William, died in the army in 1862; Jane, Charles E. and an infant. |

Samuel
H.
Bear
Samuel H. Bear, who carries on farming and stock-raising
on his place of one hundred and sixty-six acres on section 11, Cedar
Township, was born in Washington County, Iowa, on the 10th of August,
1848, his parents being Gideon and Mary
(Guinn) Bear. The father, who was a native of
Pennsylvania, came to Iowa in 1837, being the third white man in
Washington County. He entered the farm on which his son, Samuel
H., now resides and remained one of the substantial and respected
citizens of this county until called to his final rest in 1884.
The demise of his wife occurred in 1893. Unto this worthy couple
were born thirteen
children, eight of whom still survive.Samuel H. Bear remained under the parental roof until he had attained the age of twenty-one years, when he started out in life on his own account as an agriculturist, which line of activity has since claimed his time and energies. For the past twenty-four years he has owned his present farm of one hundred and sixty-six acres on section 11, Cedar Township, and in addition to tilling the soil, he has made a specialty of raising and feeding stock to some extent. In all of his undertakings he displays good management and practical methods and has long been numbered among the prosperous, progressive, and representative agriculturists of his native county. In December 1868 Mr. Bear was united in marriage to Miss Sarah Bowersox, who was born in Union County, Pennsylvania, and accompanied her parents on their removal to Stephenson County, Illinois, where the family remained for ten years. In 1865 they went to Keokuk County, Iowa, where Mr. and Mrs. Bowersox continued to reside until called to their final rest, the former passing away May 18, 1896, while the latter died March 14, 1899. Their family numbered twelve children, six sons and six daughters, seven of whom are yet living. Unto Mr. and Mrs. Bear have been born eight children, namely: Bertha D., whose birth occurred December 12, 1869, and who passed away May 3, 1881; Charles. H., born December 10, 1871, who follows farming in Cedar Township; Mary P., who was born April 9, 1874, and died March 1, 1889; Clara A., born March 17, 1876, who passed away October 3, 1878; Anna E., who was born June 8, 1878, and is now the wife of R. C. Reeves of Cedar Township; Myrtle E., whose birth occurred April 4, 1880, and who is now the wife of M. E. Booth of Washington County; one who died in infancy; and Tessie L., born January 31, 1891, who is at home. In his political views Mr. Bear is a republican, while his religious faith is indicated by his membership in the Baptist church, to which the different members of his family also belong. A resident of the county throughout his entire life, he has seen the raw prairie converted into rich farms, in the midst of which towns and cities have sprung up, bringing industrial and commercial development. All through the years, he has been an exemplary citizen, and wherever known he is honored and esteemed. From A History of Washington County, Iowa, from the first white..., Volume 2 |

Darlene Rose (Haag) Cayler was born August 22, 1926, in Ledyard, IA, daughter of Cyril and Catherine (Boever) Haag. She attended Ledyard Consolidated School. She worked in Minneapolis until her marriage to Ralph Cayler on September 3, 1949 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Ledyard. They then lived in Bancroft during their entire married lives. Darlene was a 50 year charter member of the Catholic Daughters of America. She served as a Regent for four years. She was Editor of the Bancroft Register beginning in 1965. From 1971 to 1981, she and her husband, Ralph owned the Bancroft Register. She continued writing, and on May 10, 1995 she started the column 'This & That' until her recent illness. It made her day when people would say 'yes' to being featured in her column. She liked writing about all people, especially the young, and was proud to see her column displayed with other memorabilia at graduation receptions. Darlene loved her community, and was always very active. She loved singing in the St. John Choir. She also loved volunteering in the St. John School hot lunch program and playing the wash tub with the Kitchen Klatter Band for many years. She and 'Tilliy' the mascot enjoyed many meals with the Red Hat Ladies. She and her good friend, Ann Degen, were golfing buddies in golf league for many years. She previously was a 4-H leader, and bowled in a bowling league. She enjoyed water aerobics and working out at the Health Club. She loved yard work mowing her lawn until early last summer. She loved people, family and friends and was always up to attending ballgames, eating out, movies - actually anywhere she was invited. She and Ralph traveled extensively early in their marriage, and again after Ralph retired. She was always on the go. She was much loved and will be sorely missed by many. Darlene died of lung cancer early Monday, October 24th, 2011 at the home of her daughter, Corinne McCullough. Surviving are her children; Corinne McCullough and friend Gary Jahnke of Dubuque, and Craig Cayler of Tucson, AZ; her grandchildren Kevin McCullough of Brooklyn, New York and Karen and husband Nic Hoeger and great grandchild to be born in April, Eagle, CO. She is also survived by six brothers, Claude Haag of Ames, Melbourne (Ann) Haag of Ledyard, Vernon Haag of Ledyard, Merlyn Haag of Ozark, MO, Frank (Margaret) Haag of Elmore, MN., and Lyle of Chicago, IL; and sisters Pearl Irmiter of Vinton, Sister Blanche Marie Haag of Dubuque, Isabelle (Harold) Hatten of Pinellas Park, FL, Mary Ann (Bernard) Reilly of Ledyard, and Rita (Edward) Schmalen of West Bend; and many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband Ralph in 1998; brother Art; sisters Colette Schneider and Ruth Arcand; brothers-in-law Bill Schneider, Dr. Willard Irmiter, Fred Arcand, and Art Putze; sisters-in-law Berniece Haag and Florence Haag, and nephews Dick Schneider, Lyle Arcand and Gary Hatten; and one niece, Eileen Stillman." Subject: Baer/Gwin - Critz Families Date: May 21, 2012 To: jmcdgwin@ziamet.com Dear John, ...My husband, Hal J. Critz, is the great-grandson of Gideon Bear. His grandfather was Charles and father, Mark Owen Critz. I have all their dates and info. He had forgotten his grandmother Winnie (Winora Mary Bear) had told him they had lost a baby girl between his dad and Aunt Alice. Most of the information on the Baer/Gwin families I got from Gideon's family Bible which was given to me by Hal's Aunt Alice. Am not sure who gave it to her... the National Publishing Co., Cincinnati, Ohio, and by Jones, Junkin,

visible in ink are two entries, both of which appear to be in the same
fine hand: "Mrs. M. A. Coffman" in the upper right hand corner, and
"Mr. and Mrs. Gideon Bear Family Record" slightly below center.
Less visible and just below the latter, one may be able to read in
another's less refined hand a third, very faded entry in pencil, "The
old family Bible". And fourthly, just below the first and at the
top of the water stain, in what appears to be the same hand as the
third, also in very faded pencil, is the somewhat illegible entry,
"...family Bible...", having at least one word before and at least two
after. |

Thomas Ballard Note: We know that Martha Bear and her husband Henry Thomas had seven
children. The fourth child was Nellie born in Feb 1892. That was all I
knew until last week when I located their marriage record in McCook
Co., SD marriages. Nellie was married to Cecil C. Ragland on June 11,
1913. He listed his birth place as Texas. In the 1930 Lubbock County,
Texas, federal census they are listed with six children (go take a
look) and her father Henry is also residing with them. The U.S. Social
Security Death Index shows Nelle (She seems to have dropped the "i" in
her name after the marriage) was born February 8, 1892 and died in
January 1974 in Dallas, Texas. --
