Meet the Family of David and Elizabeth Gwin Denton!

Elizabeth's known line (from James Basset Gwin II):

21.00--Richard Gwin m. Sarah Chesley
22.00--Isom Gwin m. Mary Canterbury
23.02--Elizabeth Gwin m. David Denton
David's known line (from Mary Morris Goldman):

16.00--Richard Denton m. Gennett Banyster
17.00--Richard Denton m. Susan Sibella
18.00--Sir Richard Denton m. Helen Windbank
19.00--Samuel Denton m. Mary Rock Smith
20.00--Jonas Denton m. Jane Seaman
21.00--Robert Denton m. Jane Moon
22.00--Thomas Denton m. Elizabeth Osborne
23.00--David Denton m. Elizabeth Gwin

23.02--Elizabeth Gwin, b. 1788 (ca. 1787) in [Sevier Co.] TN; d. 1858 Orange Co, IN; bd. unk.; m. in Sevier Co., TN, ca. 1803 to David Denton (b. 1778 in Hampshire Co., VA--now WV; d. 1860; bd. unk.); 11 known children
[Elizabeth was age 63 in 1850 census of Orange Co., IN]

[David was age 72 in 1850 census of Orange Co., IN],
[David was age 82 in the 27 Jul 1860 census of res. #172 of Valeen in the Southeast Township, Orange Co., IN--living in home of Barnett and Rebecca Stalcup, the seven Stalcup children, and a James W. Denton, age 17]

24.01--Allen Denton, b. 1804; m1. Hannah Anderson
; m2. 25 Nov 1845 to Clara Foster
24.02--Jane Denton, b. in TN; m. William Watkins;
[JMG Note: Jim Wall has this Jane in the birth order's second spot, as shown here. Mary Goldman lists her first. While definite dates are offered by each for the births of Allen and Isom, no claim or evidence is offered by either for Jane. Seeing the four-year gap between Allen and Isom, however, tends to make me think that she is more likely to fit between them, so I side with Jim on this one.]
24.03--Isom Denton, b. 1808; m1. Elizabeth Lincoln; m2. Elizabeth Weathers;
24.04--George Denton, b. 1810; m. (Margaret?) Arreta/Aritta Weathers
24.05--William Denton, b. 1815 m. Matilda Jones
24.06--David Denton, b. 1817 m. Eliza Emeline Bolt;

24.07--Thomas Denton, b. 1820 m. Fannie Mariah (Minerva?) Downs
[JMG Note: I'm guessing that Fannie, Joel and Tempa Downs are siblings; if they are, of course, then all their descendants are double-cousins to each other.]
24.08--Mary Denton, b. 12 Jan 1822 m. Joel Downs;
24.09--Elizabeth Denton, b. 15 Nov 1823;

[JMG Note: Jim Wall does not list this child, but Mary Goldman does. Two things--the specific (though undocumented) date and the five-year spread between Mary and Rebecca convince me to go with Mary here.]
[Is the following Elizabeth this d/o David and Elizabeth: Denton, Elizabeth m. Stalcup, Henry on 9-23-1847No, she is not.]
24.10-Rebecca Denton, b. 1827 m. Barnett Stalcup;
24.11--John Denton, b. 1830  m. Tempa Downs;

And now, here are their known children and descendants in more detail:

24.01--Allen Denton, b. in Jefferson Co., TN, 16 Jul 1804; d. 18 Dec 1883, age 79, at Harrison Co., IN, from bronchitis; bd. Anderson and Mary Lear Theopolis; d. 12 Mar 1845 in Bartholomew Co., IN); 4 ch.--11 total; m2. 25 Nov 1845 in Orange Co., IN, to Clara Foster (b. 1823 in IN); 7 ch.--11 total;
[age 46--somewhat illegible, but I think 46 is correct--in the 24 Sep 1850 census of Whiskey Run Tp., Crawford Co., IN--Clary is 25; David is 21; Theopolis A. is 17; Thomas A. is 8; Rebecca is 4, and Roxsey E. is 2];
[age 56 in the 30 Jul 1860 census of res. #60 in the Stampers Creek Township, Orange Co., IN--Clara is 37; T.A. (m) is 17, R.S. (f) 13, R.E. (f) 12, L.E. (f) 9, D. A. (f) 6, Joel (m) 4, S. A. (f) 2, Barnett (m) 9];
[age 63 in the 30 Aug 1870 census of res. #259 of Valeen in the Southeast Township, Orange Co., IN--"Clary" is 47; Anna is 17, Joel 15, Nancy 13, and Elizabeth 11],
[age 75 in the 19 Jun 1880 census of res. #201, Blue River Township, Harrison Co., IN, and living with his wife, "Clarisa", and daus. Sarah (27) and Debra A (20, son Joel (24), and grandson Wesley L (1)]

[John M. Gwin Note: I finally put two and two together and realized that this William Watkins could easily be the sibling of the Nancy Watkins who married this Jane's uncle, Richard W. Gwin. Sure enough, a Barbara Surratt had a post on Genforum's Watkins Family Forum that confirmed this! You can see Barbara's post at http://genforum.genealogy.com/watkins/messages/4193.html -- or read it right here (left side, below).]

[John M. Gwin Note: Further confirming (to me) the "ChambersBooth" claim (see green box, below) that this is the family of our Jane Denton is the presence next door of not only William Watkins' parents, John and Mary Swearens Watkins of Kentucky, but also a member of the Gaddie family of Kentucky (one of whom married a descendant of Sarah Gwin Houston, Elizabeth Gwin Denton's little sister.]

Right side, below:  Doing an unsuccessful Ancestry.com search for their marriage,
I finally searched from her side and found the entry on the right side
of the table below, which entry I feel quite sure is theirs:

In October 2010 I discovered their marriage record:

Indiana Marriage Collection, 1800-1941 about Jane Denton

Name: Jane Denton
Spouse Name: William Mathers
Marriage Date: 21 Dec 1824
Marriage County: Harrison
Performed By: Denton, Jane
Comment: Denton, Jane married Mathers, William on 21 Dec 1824 in Harrison County, Indiana
Source Title 1: Denton, Jane married Mathers, William on 21 Dec 1824 in Harrison County, Indiana
Source Title 2: Indiana
Harrison County
M a t h e r s
W a t k i n s
[John M. Gwin Note: Can you see how someone could easily have mistranscribed this?  The number of letters is the same for both words; cursive capital M's and W's are often very similar; the a's, t's, and s's are all in the same positions; there is only one tiny stroke's difference between the h and the k; and speedily written e's and i's are often made exactly alike.  In my analysis of what happened here, there is no doubt at all that "Watkins" was mistranscribed as "Mathers".]

[John M. Gwin Note:  The data in this green box is taken from the wonderful page located at

I have taken the liberty of putting it in my own outline format and supplementing it with additional data from the various censuses.]

Hi John,

I thought you might be interested in some updates on the Isom Denton family.  It turns out that Isom's son 25.09--Thomas J. Denton (b. 1845) married Mahala A. Floyd (daughter of Alexander Floyd and Frances Boston) on January 28, 1864 in Harrison County, IN.  Then Thomas joined the Civil War, serving in the 9th Regiment of the Indiana Infantry, Co. E, as a private. On November 29, 1864, he died of malaria in Tennessee (only age 19) and was buried in Nashville National Cemetery.

Mahala, pregnant, applied for widow's pension.  She was only 16, so her father Alex signed as her guardian.  My great-great-grandmother Lizzie, daughter of Thomas and Mahala, was born on January 12, 1865 in Depauw, Harrison, IN.  Then on November 1, 1866, Thomas' older brother David Franklin Denton married Mahala in Harrison County.  They never had any children together, so David has no blood descendants.

Still don't know where David and Mahala are buried, but I did find Thomas and David's brother, Wilford Denton, in Mt. Zion Cemetery in Depauw (at least, I assume it's him--don't know of any other Wilford Dentons born around 1842 who lived in Depauw).  The dates on the stone were 25 April 1842-8 July 1888.  And of course that birth date would apply to his twin, James.

Another thing you could add is that the Mary Floyd who married to William Denton was actually Mary Eliza Floyd, Mahala's younger sister.  So Mary's parents are also Alexander Floyd (1814-1880) and Frances Boston (1815-1869), and her own dates are 1853-1886.

Last night I found Wilford Denton's Civil War records.  His middle initial was 'H', and he served in Company F of the Indiana 59th Infantry.  I'm not sure if he left before or after Thomas (although Thomas was pretty late into the war).  Their father Isom may be the same Isom Denton listed in the records of the Indiana 144th Inf., Co. E.  If so, Isom joined his unit on 2 June 1865, several months after Thomas passed away.

I was able to find a list of where Thomas' regiment was throughout the war.  Apparently Thomas died the day before the Battle of Franklin.  Nashville National Cemetery was first started as a place to bury casualties from the Battle of Franklin and from the various hospitals around the area.

What I am curious about is how many of the Denton brothers fought in the Civil War?  According to Find A Grave, Isom joined, even though he was 53, and being Pres. Lincoln's cousins, it seems to me the boys would be eager to join.

From the FindaGrave.com memorial for
Hala Alice StonecipherDelaney
(Nov. 22, 1893, Harrison Co., IN - Dec. 21, 1928)

Hala was the youngest daughter of Danny and Lizzie Stonecipher, and the only one to live to adulthood. She grew up on her parents' farm in Depauw, Indiana, and had two brothers: Cort, who was eight years older than her, and Edgar, who was four years younger.

Hala was named after her maternal grandmother, Mahala A. Floyd. Her middle name, Alice, may have also come from her grandmother.

Hala attended Malwell College in Milltown, Harrison Co., IN. When she was in her late teens, she moved away from home to work at a restaurant in New Albany. Here is a postcard she wrote to her parents during that time (grammar corrected):

May 15, 1913
Dear Mama and Papa,
This is Hala in the dining room. Looks like one forsaken. They are not very good --. He said (the photo) was pretty good to be taken in a room. The dining room looks pretty and ... there are four tables. (See you) soon,
Your daughter,
Hala

On June 5, 1919, in Floyd Co., IN, Hala married Michael J. Delaney (b. 1888 in PA). They moved to Louisville, KY, and had three children: Eugene (nicknamed "Stump"), Richard, and Bonnie. Bonnie was born around 19 Dec 1928. Hala passed away a few days afterwards.

Hala's mother Lizzie died three years later, in 1931. Hala is buried next to her brother Edgar in Milltown Cem., with her parents up the hill from them. Michael Delaney is buried elsewhere.

Josiah Lincoln was the middle son of  "Captain" Abraham Lincoln; the oldest son was Mordecai, and the youngest was Thomas, father of President Abraham Lincoln. So Josiah was an uncle of the president. It is sometimes confusing because President Abraham has the same name as his grandfather. Josiah Lincoln and Catherine Barlow named their first daughter Barbara, presumably for her grandmother Anna Barbara Moyer. I think all these women spoke German, because my grandmother, who was born in 1876, told me that her grandmother, who was the daughter of Barbara Lincoln, spoke some German. My grandmother used certain expressions in German.

This is interesting to me! The first wife of my second great-grandfather, Isom Denton, was Elizabeth Lincoln, daughter of Josiah Lincoln (Abraham Lincoln's uncle) and Catherine Barlow

Isom was the son of David Denton and Elizabeth Gwin

Also, Sarah Weathers married Thomas Lincoln, son of Josiah and Catherine. She was the daughter of my third great-grandparents, Benjamin Weathers and Glathy Bullington.

When Benjamin died in 1881, nine Lincoln grandchildren shared in his estate (his daughter Sarah Weathers Lincoln Sipes had died by then).

I have sort of lost the thread. Is there a relationship between the above-mentioned Anna Barbara Moyer and my ancestor Anna Barbara Weaver/Weber whose husband was Johan Georg Klaar/George Clore?

If he's a son, then either Elizabeth's age must be wrong or Joseph must have been born to Isom's first wife and Elizabeth is the second wife. On 7 Jun 1860, the U.S. Census of Milltown (P.O.), Blue River Township, Harrison Co., IN, recorded on p. 4, residence 72, an Isom Denton, age 52, and his wife, Elizabeth, 43; with children Wilford, 18; Thomas, 15; William, 10; Hannah E., 8; Sarah E., 6; and Rachel, 4;

On 19 Jun 1880, the U.S. Census of Blue River Township, Harrison Co., IN, recorded on p. 26, l. 15, an Allen Denton, age  75, living in residence 201 with his wife, Clarisa, age 57, daughters Sarah, 29, and Debora A., 20, son Joel H. (or F.), 24, and grandson Wesley L., 1.

Living next door in residence 202 was William Denton, 29, his wife Mary, 25, daughters Ada, 10, and Mary, 6, and son Walter, 4; we believe this to be a son of either Allen or Isom. Living in residence 203 was the family of Allen's brother Isom Denton, 72, his wife Elizabeth, 62 daughters Hanna E., 28; Rachel, 23; and Mary A., 16; granddaughter Dora, 10; and grandson Benjamin Trobridge, 4.

So based on these census reports, at least some of the children should look like this:

25.00--John Denton, b. ca. 1837 (age 13 in 1850 census);
25.00--David Denton, b. ca. 1839 (age 9 in 1850 census);

[John M. Gwin Note:  From the 1860, 1870, and 1880 census summaries (by Ancestry.com), below, it seems to me that (1) Mary Denton Downs died somewhere between the births of Isom (25 Sep 1858) and Mary (ca. 1867-68), (2) that Isom married second a Nancy (nee unk.), and (3) that Mary and Rachel are Nancy's children and therefore half-siblings to the rest. However, my original data someone sent me on this family--sorry I can't now recall just who that was--states that Mary Denton died 31 Jul 1885!  If this is true, then Joel had to have divorced her in order to marry Nancy.  Addendum, 8 Nov 2011: Aha.  It's NOT true.  Tammy Feiock found her grave and posted a photo of her stone.  Everything we had is right but the year of death--1865, not 85!]

[John M. Gwin Note: Aha! Today, 18 Feb 2008, I got the following email from a "new" cousin, Sharon Waggoner, who says that her Nancy Belle Stalcup married a Shepherd D. Thomas. This is the reason why we've not been able to find Thomas Shepherd: we've had his name backwards (our notes said Thomas Shepherd)!  Further, we had her listed as the firstborn of Rebecca and Barnett, when all along she's been the lastborn! Following up on these revelations, I've now found Nancy's family in several censuses and listed them below.]

[
Jan Sanford Note (fr. her Findagrave memorial): Barnett "Barney" Stalcup; Survived by #2 wife, Jane M. (Spice) Stalcup.  Daughter, Ethel Stalcup;  Preceeded in death by Wife #1, Rebecca (Denton) Stalcup.   Children: Henry, Mary E., Peter, Margaret, Rebecca J., Eliza A., Hannah Caddie & Nancy B. Stalcup.  Son of Elizabeth (Barnett) & Peter Stalcup.]

I am a gg-granddaughter of Barnett Stalcup & Rebecca Denton. Their daughter is Nancy Belle Stalcup. However, my g-grandmother, Nancy Belle, who married Shepherd Delaney Thomas, was not the first child, but the last one. My grandmother, Nora May Thomas, their child, was born January 8, 1884, m. John Gallant Stinnett.  My mother, Flossie Marie Stinnett, age 96, still living, m. Cecil Kirkman.  I was able to get a lot of good information from your website, and I thank you. I've been told there was more than one Nancy Belle Stalcup, so this one who was listed with Barnett Stalcup and wife, Rebecca Denton Stalcup, was probably an aunt.

LILLIAN AIKMAN STALCUP
The funeral of Mrs. Lillian Aikman Stalcup occurred at the M. E. Church, Sunday afternoon at 2 o'clock, conducted by the Rev. Allen Kenworthy, interment following in the Prairie Chapel Cemetery. The floral offerings were numerous and beautiful.  The attendance was very large. OBITUARY Lillian Aikman Stalcup, daughter of Archibald and Savilla Aikman (both of whom preceded her to the other world) was born July 5, 1878, and died August 23, 1906, at the age of 28 years, 1 month and 18 days.  On May 20th she was married to Fred L. Stalcup, and she was looking forward to the time when she could join her husband in their new home, furnished and ready, at Jasonville; but in place of that home here on earth, she went to her eternal home.  After the death of her mother in January, 1886, her sister Miss Effie, was married to John Davidson, and Lillian made her home with them until her death.   When but a child she united with the M.E. Church in Lyons, and was true to her vows till death. During the last two years of her life she was a member of the official board of the church, serving as steward.   She was also a member of the Rebekah Lodge at this place.  She was one of the most prominent and zealous at the time of organization, having her membership at Switz City at the time.  On account of her ardor and zeal in the work, she was appointed the first Noble Grand.  In this office she faithfully served her term.  She represented this order in the Grand Lodge, being the first one to be so honored.   The loss of our dear sister is a very heavy one to the brothers and sisters of this order and has cast a gloom over their sacred hall, which will long remain.   With sad hearts they assembled at the M. E. Church Sunday to give their much loved sister the highest tribute of respect that is within their power.  She was the first one to represent these persons to their Grand Lodge here on earth and has now been the first called to represent them in heaven.  May this lodge be a better one by knowing that they have a sister in that higher realm where partings never come.   But there is that closer circle of relatives and dear ones who will miss her presence much more than we, for a husband, two brothers, and four sisters--W. H. Aikman, of Indianapolis; Mrs. Effie Davidson, of Lyons; Mrs. Ada Price, of Linton; Archibald Aikman, of Dugger; Mrs. Grace Aikman-Bryant, of Boise City, Idaho; and Miss Ethel Aikman, of Dugger, and nephews, nieces, and others who are related to her in the kindred ties of blood relationship.   And here in this presence, friends and relatives join in saying: "Peace to Her Ashes."

My mother still has vivid memories of her grandmother, Nancy Bell, who had arthritis which in her later life confined her to a chair in the morning and the bed for the night. She taught children in the neighborhood a little song she also taught my mother: "Sing a Song of Kitty Catcha Kimeo". We sing the little song with about three verses at our family get-togethers. Love it!! She died at age 57.]

This is Minerva "Manervy" Gwin: widow of Elijah Wright; tenth-born child of Isham and Mary Canterbury Gwin; sister of Elizabeth Gwin who married David Denton (res. 35 above, this census, and subjects of this page); and also sister of John Gwin who moved to Alabama and is my ggg-grandpa. Either she has invited her mother, Mary, to move in with them to spend Mary's last years (see scenario below) or, more likely, she--now a widow herself--and her family have moved back to the old family farm (that Isham bought when they first moved to the area) to take care of her mother. When Mary dies in five years, Minerva will inherit the farm.

In 2001, Cousin Doris Gyarmati posted on the Childers Family Forum that Minerva's husband's name is Elijah (see note immediately below).

This has to be our 24.05--William and Matilda Jones Denton, above, living next door to our George Denton here in Crawford Co.; clearly he was NOT b. in Missouri, however, so this must be an error on the part of the enumerator.

Interesting: she was b. in Crawford Co. and therefore probably was married there; their first five kids were b. in Orange Co., then they moved back to Crawford 5-7 years ago and had their last three. Did they follow Grandpa Isom and Grandma Mary to Orange Co., then she grew homesick?

This is Allen Denton, David and Elizabeth's firstborn, b. 16 Jul 1804, so his age here would've been about 46; nevertheless, the inked age on the 1850 census page is quite smeared and illegible.

It seems to me that this must be the ex-daughter-in-law of 24.05--William and Matilda Jones Denton, above. Their son, 25.03--David, married a Hannah Downs, and now in 1880 THIS lady of the same name shows up at about the right age--in the same census county--and with a 6-year-old daughter. It all seems pretty conclusive to me. If this is the same person, why did they divorce? What happened to David, her ex-husband?

OK, this MAY be the oldest child of David and Amanda Denton, since that's what the outline said that I received one time from somebody. HOWEVER, in the 1900 census, this Virgie, still living at home, was listed as VIRGIL O., MALE, and SON! Someone erred somewhere. If that 1900 enumerator erred, then the only possible explanation I can think of is this: he (the enumerator) rode his horse from farm to farm each day, taking his notes in a small notebook, then transferring the date from his notes to the big ledger when he got home for the night. Mistaking the cursive Virgie for Virgil, he simply supplied the "male" and "son" to match his error.  But suppose for a minute that the 1900 enumerator was correct; then perhaps another researcher, looking for Virgil in 1910 and not finding him, went looking for another Virgil with a similar last name and found this Virgie.

In a message dated 12/12/2005, sjacobs57atcomcastdotnet writes:

Josiah Lincoln was the middle son of "Captain" Abraham Lincoln; the oldest
son was Mordecai and the youngest was Thomas, father of President Abraham
Lincoln. So Josiah was an uncle of the president. It is sometimes confusing
because President Abraham has the same name as his grandfather. Josiah
Lincoln and Catherine Barlow named their first daughter Barbara, presumably
for her grandmother Anna Barbara Moyer. I think all these women spoke German
because my grandmother who was born in 1876 told me that her grandmother,
who was the daughter of Barbara Lincoln, spoke some German. My grandmother
used certain expressions in German.
Shelia
This is interesting to me! My second great-grandfather, Isom Denton's first wife, was Elizabeth Lincoln, daughter of Josiah Lincoln (Abraham Lincoln's uncle) and Catherine Barlow. Isom was the son of David Denton and Elizabeth Gwin.

Is there a relationship between the above-mentioned Anna Barbara Moyer and my ancestor Anna Barbara Weaver/Weberwhose husband was Johan Georg Klaar/George Clore?

Subject: Fwd: Agan, etc. -- from cousin descended from David Denton & Elizabeth Gwin

John, here is another GWIN cousin of ours, Evelyn Harper Jackson, who descends from my third great-grandparents, David Denton and Elizabeth Gwin.  As you can see, she is very much into doing family and historical research.

Would you like to invite her to visit your GUINN/GWIN web site?  I think that would be nice.

Evelyn lives rather close to the John Hay Historical Center in Salem, Washington County, Indiana which is near Orange County.  Perhaps she could assist you, if you have questions about GWINs and GWIN descendants living in the area.

I tried to call you last Saturday, but you were busy.  I will try to call you again this Saturday.  I have found some information about the GWINs in Dubois County.  I think they descend from George Holmes Gwin.

Best wishes,

Jim

Subject: Agan, etc.

Jim and Betty;
Thanks for your replies to my question even though it still is undetermned the birth/death dates of Susannah and Eleazor Lockhart's children. I am going to John Hay center tomorrow to research the Orange County records and perhaps I will find out more. All I have is from the Agan Book, and it doesn't answer my questions. The problem with the Agan book is there are no references listed for proof. The DAR will not recognize information from it for that very reason. I am working on the lineage of Ardella McCutheon Dodge through the Lockharts .
Her lineage stems from

William Lockhart (ca. 1765)/Hannah Maxwell; to

Eleazor Lockhart/Susannah Agan; to

James Alexander Lockhart/Emily Jane Burton; to

William Francis Lockhart/Caroline Eliza Stroud; then through her

grandmother; (Etta Denton McCutcheon)

mother and

herself. (Ardella McCutheon Dodge)

Ardella"s grandmother, Etta Denton McCutcheon was a sister ot my grandmother, Bessie Denton. I am ready to submit Ardella's membership in the Daughters of 1812 and a supplemental for myself through David Jones' s service. His daughter was Matilda Jones Denton who is buried in the Old Unity Baptist  Cemetery, but I have to go over and take a picture of Matilda's stone to verify her death date in 1861.

Betty, I do not have a copy of the info you sent to me about your accident at school. I remember you sending it to me, but I have the best system of filing things until it comes to finding them!! Probably it is because I am involved in so much:
1. Hugh and I are co-chairs of the Proctor House Restoration Project. This is a pre-Civil War House that the Crawford County Historical Society owns. We are interviewing architects to do a feasibility study; working on grants for the restoration; working on getting the property on the National Historical Places; restoring the pioneer cemetery on the 7 acres that our Society owns; working on preparation for the 2nd annual celebration of Crawford County's Founders Day plus being the treasurer of the Restoration Project. Hugh and I  are chairing/planning activities such as a 4-day yard sale and Music Fest for fund raisings and even a dedication of a marker for Professor Johnson's Marengo Academy in April. Plus I answer and research queries mailed to the Crawford County courthouse and then referred to our Society.
2. We are so active in the SAR and involved in the grave location project of soldiers/patriots in Harrison and Crawford County. In so doing we have two grave markings to put in place for the upcoming summer. I am happy to have completed the application papers for two new members for the John Hay SAR Chapter at Salem. One was Glenn Crecelius through the Pirtles and the other one was Ernie Routh who I was able to open up a line for him that had never been submitted before. Quite a feat!
3. I have recently resigned the office of Historian in The Hoosier Elm Chapter DAR that I have held for ten years. I am glad that a younger person was willing and able to take this project. This job incures--not only keeping a factual account of our chapter's work--but restoration of pioneer cemeteries in Harrison County and I felt it was time for someone else younger to take this on. While I was historian, using my research we were able to erect markers for three Revolutionary War Soldiers here in Blue River Township that were long due to be memorilized. (Thomas Reneau, William Henson and John Cromer)
4.. I am Indiana State Chaplain for the Daughters of 1812 as well as treasurer of our Jonathan Jennings Chapter locally. This involves travelling to State Conferences and lots of paper work. In the capacity of state chaplain, we also have a grave location project of soldiers of War of 1812. I have just made the yearly report of 59 soldiers' graves found in Harrison and Crawford County. This is really hard as you have to research not only the soldiers' service but naming of children and who they married.
5. Am active member of the Daughters of the Union but refuse to take on anymore offices.
6. Some additional things achieved the last two years were the sucessful fund raising for flag poles to be placed at the Hancock Chapel cemetery as well as Mt. Tabor. And the research and dedication of a marker placed at Union Chapel Cemetery marking the graves of William Poe; Eliza Crecelius (who I descend from) and William's second wife, Susan Harrison more than 100 years after their deaths.
This is why I am busy all the time. I have heard so many retirees mentioning about being bored---whee!!!

Jim, you have had my address and phone number in the past. So I must not be the only one who misplaces things (grin). We have talked, as we have mutual relatives through the Gwinns. David Denton who married Elizabeth Gwinn were my 3rd great-grandparents through my grandmother, Sarah Elizabeth "Bessie" Denton Poe.

Evelyn Harper Jackson

[John M. Gwin Note: I've reconstructed Cousin Evelyn's line into my format. However, I can't put it into the outline above yet, as I don't know the names of her ancestors in generations 24 and 25. Assuming our information is correct, Evelyn and her 2nd cousin, Ardella, are Jim's and my fifth cousins.  And now, in Dec 2008, Evelyn has written me to update this line and fill in these blanks--see above!]

23.02--David and Elizabeth Denton, Evelyn's ggg-grandparents
24.01--Evelyn's Denton gg-grandparents
25.01--Evelyn's Denton g-grandparents
26.01--Etta Denton m. Mr. McCutcheon
27.01--Ardella's father
28.01--Ardella McCutheon m. Mr. Dodge
26.02--Sarah Elizabeth "Bessie" Denton m. Mr. Poe

from notes of Miss Loretta Davis & Mr. Emory Bruner
As published in the souvenir Cenntenial Program for the 1959 Harrison County Fair.

Blue River Township is located in the northwest corner of Harrison County; as its name implies, Big Blue River flows along and forms the west boundary of this township.

According to the records in the courthouse in Corydon, the first settlers of this township took land in the extreme northwest part of the township along the river. These were:

a.  Arthur Whitehead in 1817;
b.  Levi Taylor and John Coe in 1818; and 0
c.  Benjamin King in 1819.

d.  Josiah Lincoln, an uncle of President Abraham Lincoln, settled in southwest Blue River Township.  Josiah Lincoln had six children; two sons

1.  Jacob Lincoln and
2.  Thomas Lincoln [Jim Wall Note: he married Sarah Weathers, daughter of my third great-grandparents, Benjamin Weathers and Glathy Bullington Weathers.  Benjamin Weathers' second wife was Jane Gwin Tipton, daughter of Isom Gwin and Mary Canterberry.] and four daughters:
3.  daughter Lincoln m. John Crutchfield,
4.  daughter Lincoln m. Isom Denton[Jim Wall Note: son of David Denton and Elizabeth Gwin Denton] ,
5.  daughter Lincoln m. John Briscoe, and
6.  daughter Lincoln m. John Sullenzer [Sullenger?].
Most of this information is contained in a History of the Lincoln Family by Waldo Lincoln.  Isom Gwin married one of the Lincolns.  However, his name is shown as Givin in the book.

Mary,
I have Aretta Weathers' parents as Joseph and Rachel (Potter) Weathers. I've made a few trips to Orange County searching the records and there is no will or estate for Joseph Weathers that gives his children's names. His land was adjoining the land of David Denton, however, as described in the land records, so it seems plausable that their children could have married each other. I've also checked the other Weathers siblings of that generation and none of them had a daughter named Aretta. The fact that George and Aretta Denton named their first four children Rachel, Joseph, David, and Elizabeth was interesting as it seems Rachel and Joseph were Aretta's parents' names and David and Elizabeth were George's parents' names.

I descend from George and Aretta's son Joseph Denton, through his son Harmon, no doubt named after his uncle, your Harmon. When my Harmon was a teenager he left home and moved to northwest Indiana. Because of his southern accent and the fact that there was no official birth record and he didn't have much schooling, people thought he was saying "Herman" when he gave his name. From then on in marriage records, land records, death records, tombstone, etc. it was always spelled "Herman", even though he always said it was Harmon and he was called "Harm" growing up.

I'd love to talk to you more on the family as I'm trying to track down all of the rest of George and Aretta's children. E-mail me at jordan65@peoplepc.com if you get a chance. Thanks.

John, Mary Angeline Denton Patterson is my maternal great-grandmother. Lura, or Jean as she preferred, was my grandmother. Laura Rees

My g-g-grandfather:

2.3--Claude Denton
2.4--Earl "Coxey" Denton m. Leora Francis HOWE
I can't find information on my g-g-grandfather's birth in either IN or NC, respectively. In most censuses, John says he was born in either IN, with father born in TN (Abt. 1817) and Mother born in VA (Abt. 1823), or that he was born in NC, parents born in NY or TN. And now his death certificate says his father, David DENTON is born in NY and his mother, S. BOLT was born in IN!!! Let's add some more confusion to an already elusive ancestor! UGH! And so I plead to the mailing list for HELP--and any possible connection!

BIOGRAPHY:
From Biographical Sketches; History of Howard and Tipton Counties, 1883 Page 400:

John M. Denton, son of David and Emeline Denton, was born in NC 21 Mar 1847. He is of English-German descent and is a nephew of the celebrated geologist, William Denton of Philadelphia. When he was three years of age, his parents moved to Washington Co., IN, settled on a farm of 80 acres, and there died. At the age of 10, he removed to Orange Co., and there he attended what school he could during the winter and worked at farming during the summer. In 1862, he came to Howard Co. and worked for Oliver Moulder until his enlistment, in 1864, in the IN Vol. Inf., serving under Gen. Thomas. For 12 months he served faithfully and was mustered out at Louisville, KY. Since his return, he has been chiefly engaged in the saw and planing mill business. In 1870 he married Miss Martha Stratton, who died in 1879, the mother of two boys and two girls. Mr. Denton is a Mason, an Odd Fellow, a member of the G.A.R., and of the Friends' Society.

OBITUARY
Funeral of John Denton
Funeral services for the late John M. Denton, who died Friday night at 11 o'clock at the State Soldiers' Home in Lafayette, were held in this city this afternoon. Rev. E. T. Howe, pastor of the M.T. Church, officiated at services held at the Christian church at 2 o'clock. Members of the Masons, Red Men, and G.A.R. post attended the services. Burial was at Bunnell cemetery.
The body was brought to Frankfort Saturday evening and was taken to Comley undertaking parlors, where it remained until the hour of funeral today.

Apoplexy was the immediate cause of Mr. Denton's demise, although he has been failing in health for several months. His illness dated from the time of the Arbor Day celebration held in Frankfort two years ago. With a number of others, Mr. Denton was seated upon the speakers stand, at the southeast corner of the square, when the structure collapsed. He received an injury to his right leg which afterward developed gangrene. Finally the limb was amputated below the knee. Since then his condition gradually weakened. He entered the Soldiers' Home last May and visited the city once since then.

Mr. Denton was a resident of Frankfort for many years, during a large part of which he was a member of the police force and was also a rural mail carrier. He was a policeman for 14 years, serving two years under Marshal Jones and under George W. Bird. He proved an efficient officer and made a host of friends in the city. While engaged as a rural mail carrier, he suffered a stroke of apoplexy. He left the service but returned later. Finally his failing health compelled him to retire from active work. Although of southern birth, Mr. Denton served in the Union Army during the civil war. He first served as a member of the 57th Indiana Volunteers and, after being mustered out, re-enlisted in Company I, 157th Indiana Volunteers with which he served during the remainder of the war.

He was past 66 years old, having been born March 25, 1847, a son of David and Sarah Denton. He was a native of North Carolina. He came to Indiana with his parents and was married to Miss Nettie Stratton. His wife died 40 years ago. Four children were born to the couple, of whom three survive. His second marriage was to Mary M. Spray. She died December 25, 1910. Two children were born of this marriage, both surviving. The five children are: Mrs. August Holcomb of Lafayette; Miss Prudence Denton of Muncie; Samuel Denton of Arkansas; Claude Denton of Marion; and Earl Denton of Frankfort.

The deceased belonged to the Friends Church. He held membership in the Masonic order, the Red Men, and G.A.R.

Meet the Family of David and Elizabeth Gwin Denton!
Mary Morris Goldman's Source
Jim Wall's and others' Sources
I, John Gwin, met Mary Goldman, my 5th cousin, in Nov 2005. She sent me her gedcom on the David Denton family, and I have listed it in this left-hand column below. While hers has quite a bit more info than Jim's, his does have info that she does not; therefore, I have elected to list both side by side for comparison purposes. I have also taken the liberty of putting her data into my outline format rather than the standard gedcom. I, John Gwin, met Jim Wall, also my 5th cousin, in 2004, and he has sent me quite a bit of info regarding the descendants of Isham Gwin, our gggg-grandfather. I'm listing things I've gotten from him in this right-hand column below. You can see immediately that Jim's and Mary's sources conflict with each other in one way or another from place to place. They are basically in agreement, of course; however, I hope that using this side-by-side format will allow readers to see more easily the conflicts. Jim has also sent much more information that is listed on our Gwins in Indiana page.

I am a gggranddaughter of Barnett Stalcup & Rebecca Denton. Their daughter is Nancy Belle Stalcup. However, my ggrandmother, Nancy Belle, who married Shepherd Delaney Thomas, was not the first child, but the last one. My grandmother, Nora May Thomas, their child,was born January 8, 1884, m. John Gallant Stinnett. My mother, Flossie Marie Stinnett, age:96;still living, m. Cecil Kirkman.I was able to get a lot of good information from your website, and I thank you. I've been told there was more than one Nancy Belle Stalcup; so this one who was listed with Barnett Stalcup & wife, Rebecca Denton Stalcup, was probably an aunt.

Subject: Helen Windebank Denton

I know there has been a lot of speculation of Helen Windebank Denton, wife of Rev. Richard Denton, Eng./Ct./L.I., NY/Eng. It fascinates me for more than one reason. We lived in England for almost three yrs. That, as well as being one of my ancestors whose parentage hasn't as yet been proved,

I've been thinking, as well as searching for any clue. I don't know if there is any possibility of her being the same child as Ellen Windebank, but I found a website that is about the book written by a former vicar of Hurst Parish Church, Revd. John C F Wimberley, Vic of Hurst 1919-1936, A History of the Parish  of Hurst. It has a history of the village of Hurst in the reigns of the various monarchs of Britain. Listed under the Tudor Sovereigns are the earliest records from 1585 to 1607, of Baptisms & Marriages, and Burials, 1585 to 1604. It lists: "At Haines Hill lived Mr. Thomas Windebank, Clerk of the Signet." I do not know the authority for saying that his famous son Francis was born there. The name occurs once in our Registers, thus- "Ellen Windebank, the daughter of Thomas Windebank, Esqueyer, was baptised the fythe of February 1593."
Here is the website address:

http://history.hvs.org.uk/Hurst/RevWimb.htm

Maybe someone has already found this. I haven't seen it posted on any of the websites. I would be interested in your thoughts.
Sharon (Kirkman) Waggoner

In reading over this e-mail, I see I didn't make myself clear. I was referring to the information I've seen on the web about Helen Windebank Denton. If there has been any proof to her connection to Sir Thomas Windebank, as his daughter, I'm unaware of it. In his will, four daughters are mentioned; Ellen is one of them. There is no mention of a daughter named Helen. The e-mail address I sent to you will connect you with the quote from the record of the christening of Ellen. Since the two names are so similar, there was some speculation that they were the same daughter. I should have sent this to someone else probably, since they were the ones who were delving into her identity.
When you have time, do take a look and see if you think there's a possibility of this Ellen being Helen, wife of Rev. Richard Denton.

I so appreciate you mentioning your faith in Jesus Christ. I come from very committed christian parents. My husband & I have been very active in song evangelism for years. One of our sons is in full-time christian service. He is the tenor for Liberty Quartet out of Boise, Idaho. They were in New Mexico just about two wks. ago.

God bless.
Sharon
