regarding the ancestry of Mary Jane Thompson Modified Register for John
W THOMPSON
First Generation 1. John W THOMPSON was born1,2 about 1770 in County Tyrone, Ireland. He died3 in 1849 in Cross Creek, Jefferson, Ohio, United States. John W. Thompson emigrated from County Tyrone, Ireland with his wife and four children around 1806. He settled in the Cross Creek area of Jefferson County, Ohio between 1807 and 1809, where additional children were born. His children, with the exception of Mary and Nancy, married and settled on nearby farms in the Cross Creek/Steubenville area. Mary and Nancy did not marry and lived out their lives on the family farm. His will was made in 1842 and probated in 1849, naming his ten children. At the time of the making of his will, his wife was still living, as he makes settlement for her. It is assumed that she died between 1843 and 1850, as she is not living with her daughters in the 1850 census. No given name is known for his wife, as she is referred to in his will as "my loving wife." After the distribution of his property, Mary and Nancy remained on the farm until their deaths. As named in the probate of his will, his children were: (1) William, (2) Matthew, (3) Margaret, (4) John, (5) Moore, (6) James, (7) Nancy, (8) Richard, (9) Thomas and (10) Mary. Bowen, 1911, p. 538 (excerpt from biography of Matthew Thompson referring to his father John Thompson)...."When he was two years old his father brought him and the rest of the family to the United States and located in Jefferson county, Ohio, among the pioneers...John, grew to maturity and was married when a young man to Maria Ross, who was a native of Jefferson county, Ohio. In 1850 they came to Washington county, Iowa, and entered wild prairie land from the government and here spent their latter years, Mr. Thompson dying at the age of seventy-two. Twelve children were born to them, two of whom died early, namely: William, deceased; John, also now deceased, lived in Pleasant township, this county; Mary, Moore, Nancy, Margaret, Caroline, Thomas, Robert. Matthew, of this review, was the third child in order of birth in his father’s family...The parents of the subject were forty-four days making the tedious and somewhat dangerous overland journey from the Buckeye state to Washington county, Iowa, bringing with them three wagons and nine horses. They had hard work getting through in many places. The father secured one hundred and sixty acres of land here for which he paid five dollars per acre. He began life in typical pioneer fashion, erecting a log cabin and stable which, as he prospered, gave way to more substantial buildings, for in time he had a very comfortable home and an excellent farm. He was a good citizen and did a great deal for his community in many ways." Steubenville Newspaper, 6 June, 1827, p. 3, A-7 (TH014-c6) incorrectly indicates Mr. John Thompson married "Sarah" Ross, both of Cross Creek township. Official record correctly indicates "Mariah." If this is our 25.04--Lillian Gwin, daughter, b. ca. 1866 in KS, then she lived to about age 73. Grand View Volunteers say: Cemetery records show last name spelled with 1 "n" = Gwin; however, vitalsearch-ca Califoria Death Index shows a Lillie Gwinn (double-n) who died at age 74 on 1/9/1939 in Santa Cruz County. This would be consistent with a 1/11/1939 interment. | ||
