SOURCES:

1.  Nancie O'Sullavin
is a friend I met on this site. Neither of us has been able to connect our lines to the the other yet. But several things--(1) the common last name (GWIN has many misspellings--just kidding, Nancie! ;-), (2) the repetition of common given names in the early generations, (3) the proximity in setting, (4) our desire to make connections, (5) and now a possible common occupation (one of my sources for Isham says he was, like Baydsen, a miller)--have pulled us together in spirit and prompted this page. For example, my John Gwin was born in Nov 1792 in Greene/Sevier Co., "western" NC (four years later this became the eastern end of the state of Tennessee). But his father, 22.00--Isham Gwin, could easily have been a sibling of Nancie's Baysden. This is pure speculation, of course, but such theories are often the root of successful research, are they not?

2.
Ancestry.com has been an amazing source for images of the various original census and other documents.

3.  Findagrave.com has been a wonderful source for the testimonies of graveseekers regarding the locations for, descriptions and photos of, and other addenda to the graves of the various family named herein.

4.  And now Facebook.com, of all things, has become a way to bring descendants of the family members of old into the present--living cousins!  And WHO KNOWS which of these will be holding the very piece of evidence that will solve the puzzle for us all?!

5.  Wikitree.com published Mr. Bryan Sypniewski's profile on Elizabeth Baisden, presenting her to be the mother of Baysden Gwinn and the wife of John Gwinn, Baysden's father, and to have died in SC on 6 Jun 1845.

Now here they are again in more detail:

22.00--Baysden Gwinn, b. ca. 1770 in SC; d. 6 Jun 1845 in SC; bd. Friendship Bapt. Ch. Cem., Pauline, Spartanburg Co., SC--Findagrave.com memorial #49441388; m. betw. 1792-1793 to Sarah (Sally?) Maddox (b. ca.1776; d. 15 Feb 1848 in SC; d/o Mr. Maddox [b. 1760] and Elizabeth (nee unk., b. betw. 1755-1760; d. 6 Jan 1832 in Beaverdam Creek, SC; bd. Warrior Creek Bapt. Ch. Cem., Gray Court, Laurens Co., SC--Find A Grave Memorial# 49441471); 12 ch.;
[listed as Bazon Guin in the 1800 census of Laurens Dist., SC]
[listed as Baysdin Gwin in the
1810 census of Laurens Dist., SC]

[Nancie's Notes: Baysden was a miller. The name has also been spelled Basden. The information on his children was given to me by Charles Hawkins.
There is a possibility that Baysden's father was a John Gwin; there is a record of a John who was minister of a church in another county and moved later to Laurens Co.   Little is known about Sarah Maddox's parents, but she did have siblings: John Maddox m. Barbary (nee unk.); William Maddox; Polly Maddox m. Thomas Simpson. Sarah was apparently a member of the Warrior Creek Baptist Church of Gray Court, SC. Her death is recorded in the early records of the church. Their mother, Elizabeth (nee unk.), remarried a Daniel Long thought to be a son of Ware Long of Culpepper, VA. From that marriage there were several children: Seymore, Daniel, Ware, Nancy, and Elizabeth.]

[John M. Gwin Note:  Well, this is interesting to me!

Tarzie Davis shows up in the 1910 and 1920 censuses just as she should, as the daughter of Lizzie Godfrey and Efraim Monroe Davis in Laurens Co., SC.  I have listed these findings (of her single days) in the lighter color at the top of the box.

Assuming that she'd probably be married and maybe have some kids in 1930, but having no idea what her married name would be, I did an Ancestry.com search for any first name "Tarzie" in SC (I mean, after all, how many people name their daughters Tarzie?).]  Voila!  Up came the lone hit, Tarsie Dennis, age 23, and living in Newberry Co., SC, which abuts Laurens to the east!  I knew I'd found her, and I copied her data onto the page.  I have listed these findings (of her married days) in the darker color at the bottom of the box.

I finished the census searches with 1940 and turned to Findagrave.com to search
further for Tarzie and Jesse.  Sure enough, there she was, with him listed as Thompson Dennis--but hold on!  Her maiden name was listed as Singley, and her parents were listed as Levi Calvin Singley and Leila Emile Nates Singley!

At first I thought the person who made the memorial had gotten confused and listed her data incorrectly as the daughter of the wrong parents.  But no, the photo of their gravestone posted there clearly shows her middle initial to be an S (obviously for Singley).

Flabbergasted at the coincidence, I looked for Levi Singley in the 1920...oops, gotta go.

Any help, anyone?]

23.06--John George Gwinn, b. 8 Dec 1794; d. 6 Apr 1852 in Pauline, SC, near Walnut Grove; bd. unk.; m. 21 Oct 1813 in Laurens Co., SC, to Rutha Higgins (b. 15 Feb 1793 in Cedar Springs, to Thomas Higgins and wife; d. 17 Jun 1862 in Pauline, SC, near Walnut Grove; bd. unk.); four ch.;

[Nancie's Notes: all from family Bible and tombstone. John Gwinn's last words were, "Let me die the death of the righteous, and let my last end be like me." The Gwinn family cemetery is located on road 50 one-half mile south of the intersection with road 111 in the Walnut Grove, SC, community. The stones are near the street several yards away from the house that stands there now. Rutha Higgins: " Her children called her the blessed. Died with Christ; she shall also live with Him." Not much is known about Rutha; there is a theory that her father's name was Thomas Higgins.]

[John M. Gwin Note: This from a 2001 Genforum posting: Nancie, I have traced back to Baysden Gwinn. I am a descendant of his through his son John (1795-1852). Is the James B. Gwinn you listed the son of Baysden with a birthdate of about 1792? I would love any info that you have. Please e-mail me at rayboii at prodigy dot net.  Thanks!  Melanie

And here's a response to it from 2005
:
Melanie, I have some information that may be of interest to you. I believe that my gg-grandfather, Thomas Melmouth Gwinn of Laurens, S.C., may have been the son of Baysden Gwinn by his first wife, whose name I understand was Sara or Sara Elizabeth. I also believe that her maiden name may have been Heimbeck, a German name which, like Gwinn, seems to have evolved into all sorts of spellings here in America: Hambeck, Hamback, Hambach, Hanback, Hanbach, Handback, etc.).  In view of your reference to both the Gwinn and Handback(s) families in your posting, I can't help but feel we must be related.  I have my family tree pretty well fleshed out beginning with Thomas Melmouth and his wife, Eliza (Gillespie), and welcome the opportunity to share information with you.  Mitch Gwinn ]

[John M. Gwin Note: The information listed in this white box regarding the children of Nathaniel and Kesiah is not necessarily correct. Starting with Nancie's data that Kesiah, b. 14 Jan 1821 and m. to a Nathaniel Vise, I found in the 1850 census a Nathaniel Vise married to a Kesiah of about the right age. They were living in Illinois, however, so if this is our Vise family, then there was certainly a reason to uproot themselves and move to the slaveless northwestern frontier, possibly a family conflict over the institution of slavery. Nevertheless, in 1850 I could find no other family of Vises that remotely resembled Nathaniel and Kesiah, and so I have listed this information here.  Lending gigantic support to the possibility that this is indeed our Kesiah Savilla Gwinn Vise is the fact that she, her husband, and her son Hosea are all listed as having been born in South Carolina!  Their daughter Jenette is listed as b. in Illinois, placing the family's move there from SC as between 1840 and 1844.]

[Nancie's Notes: George and Emma had 11 children. Due to very serious illnesses of Emma (typhoid fever), two of the children were given up for adoption. Jessie was adopted by a Dorman family, believed to be his aunt, Moline Gwin Dorman, George's sister. Jessie chose Dorman for his name. Preston was also adopted, and it is believed that he, too, was adopted by some family member. He kept his surname Gwin. There was a misspelling on the tombstone; his name was spelled with a u instead of a w, and it was never corrected. George served in the Confederacy in Co. A, 1st Battalion, Blanchard's Brigade, State Reserves, SC Volunteers. This unit was mustered at Spartanburg, SC, in the summer of 1864. George would have been 15 years old at the time of muster and 16 in the fall of '64. He lost an arm in the war. His father's will was not probated until 22 May 1873, and most of the assets left by Josiah had been liquidated by this time, leaving the estate's value at only $261.40, of which George received $34.85.]

OBITUARY
Nancie R. O'Sullivan, 78, of Spartanburg, SC, went home to be with her Lord and Savior on Sunday, February 16, 2020.  Born May 30, 1941 at Drayton, SC, she was the daughter of the late John Furman O'Sullivan and Virginia Gwinn O'Sullivan.
A member of the Assembly of God in Stockbridge, GA, her life was guided by her convictions and her assurance in the power of the Holy Spirit.  She was a caring person, especially to seniors.
She is survived by a precious sister, Johnie Byars (Billy); best friend, Muffin; aunts Catherine Henderson and Imogene McElrath; and many cousins.  She had a special love for her friends through the years; Susan Hutcheson, Bobby McGaha, and Sandra Cartee.
Nancie did not want a funeral service; a private celebration was held at a later date.  Memorials may be made in her memory to a charity of one's choice.  Bobo Funeral Chapel and Cremation Service, Spartanburg, SC were in charge.
Spartanburg Herald-Journal--Feb. 18, 2020

[John M. Gwin Note--9 Nov 2021:  I have mixed emotions to see today from her FindAGrave memorial that Nancie is now in heaven with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.  I'm just a little sad because she helped me so much with her Baysden Gwinn line, and now she's no longer able to continue that help.  But I'm delighted and overjoyed that she is now in heaven and will spend forever there!  However, I must issue a word of caution here to you, dear reader:

The Scriptures are very clear that NOT EVERYONE goes to heaven when he/she dies--it's not an automatic event.  The Bible says that only those who have accepted Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior will be allowed to enter.  All those who refuse to accept HIS payment on the cross for their sins (i.e., before they die) must spend forever without Him in what the Bible calls hell.  See 2 Thessalonians 1:9, which says "And these will pay the penalty of eternal destruction away from the presence of the Lord and from the glory of His power."  Please humbly ask Him now to save you and give you that eternal life that Nancie is now enjoying.]

23.10--Lewis Gwinn, b. 12 Feb 1821; d. 25 Sep 1907, bd. in Pleasant Hill Cem., Franklin, GA; m. Dec 1839 to Lucinda Gillespie (b. unk.; d. unk.; bd. unk.); at least eight ch. reported by Nancie;   DESCENDANTS POSSIBLE

[Nancie's notes: Charles Hawkins states this may not be one of Baysden's children. But Greenville Mountaineer is the source for the marriage of Lewis and Lucinda. The 1860 census of Franklin Co., Ga., listed Catherine Handback, age 92, as living with the Lewis Gwinn family, and in the 1880 census of Franklin, Lewis indicated his father was born in Virginia. Lewis is reported to have moved to Franklin Co., Ga., between 1850 and 1852. Lewis and Lucinda had eight children, three born in SC and five born in GA; the first daughter was named Sarah after Lewis' mother.]

[In Sep 2010, Peggy Farmer writes:  "I'd sure like to know where you got Lewis Guinn married to Lucinda Gillespie from the Greenville paper.  I found evidence of him marrying in SC all right, but certainly not to a Gillespie. Can't guarantee it was him, but the time and ages seemed ok.  Instead, the one I find a Lewis Gwinn married to is Lucinda Gala.  South Carolina Mag. of Ancestral Research, Vol  3, #3 (1808-1851):     'G500 GWINN, LEWIS; G400 GALA, LUCINDA;  Jan 02 1840' "]

These have to be Nancie O'Sullavin's Baysden and Sarah and seven of their children.  He has the right name, they are the right ages and of the right number and in the right district--everything fits.
This is a followup table to the above 1810 census excerpt;
it is an attempt to discern which of Baysden's and Sarah's children are the seven listed above.

John M. Gwin Analysis and Comments

Baysden Gwinn
1770
He's 39-40 in 1810.

Sarah Gwinn 1776
She's 33-34 in 1810.

unk. daughter Gwinn (eventually Mrs. Martin)
unk.

Since we don't know the date of birth of this person, she could've come later in the birth order.  Or, since she's the only one who is called by her married name, perhaps she is indeed the eldest and was already moved out of the house by 1810.

Elizabeth H. Gwinn unk.

Since we don't know the date of birth of this person, she could've come later in the birth order.  Baysden and Sarah had seven kids showing in 1810; this could've been one of them.  She is one of two daughters, then--Elizabeth and Polly--exactly what the 1810 census says.

James B. Gwinn unk.

Since we don't know the date of birth of this person, he could've come later in the birth order.  Baysden and Sarah had seven kids showing in 1810; this could've been one of them. There are five sons here, then, who could easily fit into the 1810 scenario.

Polly Gwinn unk.

Since we don't know the date of birth of this person, she could've come later in the birth order.  Baysden and Sarah had seven kids showing in 1810; this could've been one of them, in which case she would be one of two daughters, then--Elizabeth and Polly--exactly what the 1810 census says.

William Gwinn unk.

Since we don't know the date of birth of this person, he could've come later in the birth order.  Baysden and Sarah had seven kids showing in 1810; this could've been one of them. There are five sons here, then, who could easily fit into the 1810 scenario.

John Gwinn 1774
None--he would've been 36 YOA in 1810--

Who IS this person??? He is only four years younger than Baysden!  There has to be an error here somewhere... Perhaps he was born in 1794, not 1774, making him 15 or 16 here in 1810.

Elias Gwinn 1802
He would've been 8 YOA in 1810.

Thomas Gwinn 1807
He would've been 3 YOA in 1810.

Reuben Gwinn 1809
He would've been 1 YOA in 1810.

Lewis Gwinn 1821
He wasn't born yet in 1810.

Nancy M. Gwinn 1828
She wasn't born yet in 1810.

Nancy Emma Gwinn 1825
She wasn't born yet in 1810.

Dear John,

I am responding to your web page.  My name is Bill Long, and I am a descendant of Ware Long.  I see that on your page you have a notation for Nancie's notes where it is mentioned "Their mother, Elizabeth, remarried a Daniel Long thought to be a son of Ware Long of Culpepper, Va.  From that marriage there were several children:  Seymore, Daniel, Ware, Nancy, and Elizabeth."

I would be interested in corresponding with anyone who may have been a descendant of Daniel Long.

This is just to let you know that I have started a new Ware Long Ancestry Page on MyFamily.com. I have 105 mb of storage space. The space is intended for those who are researching Ware Long to share information, and in addition for the descendant lines to store photos, records, and information. It is an excellent way of electronically preserving the information and keeping it available for others.

I have much to download and only have a few things on the site right now. However, I will be shortly sending out invitations to the site, and if you are a descendant of this line or are interested in researching the line, I would like to send you an invitation. I would also be interested in contacting Nancie to invite her to the site.

Nancie is my cousin. We have been tracking this family forever. When I was 9 years old my daddy became pastor of a church in the upper part of the state in SC. One day as I was exploring through the woods, I ran across a grave that had my mother's last name on it. Now I know it belonged to Baysden Gwin's wife Sarah Maddox. From that day--I am now in my dont-tell middle age--we have been looking for the history of our family. Nancy and I have found that Baysden's father's name was John Gwin who married Elizabeth Baisden in Southhampton, Va. Someone told me that they had two sons named John (Baisden?) and William. Could this John Gwin (Chesley's parents) have remarried at some point? Nannie's email is nancieo@earthlink.net. Let's keep in touch. Also in Christ, Joye McElrath Hanna

Hi, My name is Joye McElrath Hanna from South Carolina. I was looking at your web site because I am doing a family tree from John Gwin/Elizabeth Baisden line from the 1700's in Southhampton, Va to my mother who is a Gwin. It is interesting that several ancestors as well as my uncle have Chesley in their name. I have tried to find a reason but have not been sucessful. Do you have any info on the Gwin's in SC that may help. Thanks, Joye

Joye,
I'm delighted to hear from you--thanks for writing!

I'm excited about the possiblities here, and I hardly know where to begin. Let's just jump right in:

First of all, I don't know what parts of the site you have had time to visit yet, so if you've already seen this, just skip it. If not, this might be very important for you. Several years ago a researcher named Nancy O'Sullavin wrote to me about her Baysden Gwin in SC. Nothing rang any bells, so I built a page for her line for her and posted the page on my site under "Unrelated (As-of-yet) Gwins". I've tried to make contact with her since, but she changed e.mail addresses and didn't tell me her new one. Anyway, here's the link to my page for her--see what you think:

http://www.zianet.com/jmcdgwin/GENEALOGY/SURNAMES/Gwin/gwinnbaysden.htm

Secondly, I have a theory about Chesley. By now you probably know where my own Chesleys' names come from: my ggggg-grandpa, Richard Gwin, married Sarah Chesley near Jamestown sometime around 1760-1770 or so. (We believe that one of the Chesley Gwins who appear in Alabama is their son and my gggg-granduncle.)

Meanwhile, Richard's and Sarah's son Isham Gwin married Mary Canterbury in Montgomery Co., VA, and eventually became my gggg-grandparents. Their son John Gwin married Jane Walker and became my ggg-grandparents, and it was one of THEIR kids, Chesley R. Gwin (we're pretty sure the R is for Richard), who is the Chesley Gwin about whom we know the most. Here's our page for him:

http://www.zianet.com/jmcdgwin/GENEALOGY/SURNAMES/Gwin/gwinChesleyR.htm

Isham and Mary had one child who MAY have been named Chesley, but we're least clear about this one. FOR SURE two of Isham's and Mary's sons--William and John--moved to Alabama. IF this third child was a son, and IF he was named Chesley, and IF he moved with William and Ggg-grandpa John, then he is one of the Chesleys in AL.

Now back to my theory: Richard and Sarah must have had other children, and one of them was probably a son named Chesley who moved south into SC. Here's one more webpage to investigate--see what you think:

http://www.zianet.com/jmcdgwin/GENEALOGY/SURNAMES/Gwin/gwinnchesleyleviniaclay.htm

I have to go now--have fun looking--let me hear from you when you've had a chance to digest some of it.

Best to you,
In Jesus,
John (Contact information:)

You reference Charles Hawkins and Warrior Creek Baptist Church on the Baysden website. Warrior Creek is the church my daddy pastored for awhile. I grew up with Charles' sons when I was little. My and Nancie's  grandmother, Daisey Hughes, grew up at Warrior Creek also. The Hughes/Gwin families have a long history in that area. As a matter of fact Daisy's grandfather is Chesley Hughes from Laurens Co., SC. -- Joye

Nancie, I have traced back to Baysden Gwinn. I am a descendant of his through his son John (1795-1852). Is the James B. Gwinn you listed the son of Baysden with a birthdate of about 1792? I would love any info that you have. Please e-mail me at rayboii@prodigy.net.
Thanks!
Melanie

Does anyone have any info on Baysden Gwin who
married Sarah "Sally" Maddox? He was born in SC about 1770 and died June 6, 1845. His daughter was Nancy Emma Gwin who married Starling Tucker Riddle. I can't find anything on Baysden or Sarah. Please help!
Thanks Tammy

JOYE--HI! I looked him up in the www.family search.org file and found that he was married to Sarah Sally Maddox. He had 12 children. One of which married one of my ancesters. Her name was Nancy Emma Guinn. Also I found tonight on Ancestry.com an address of a submitter for Baysden. This e-mail address is dangwin921@aol.com. He may be able to help you some. Keep me informed on Baysden's parents when you find out which John it is. Good luck! Tammy
My cousin and I have been digging for over a year and what we have come up with is that the family came from Southhampton Co., Va in the early 1700's to SC. There was a John Gwin married to Elizabeth Basden in Southhampton. In Baysden's will it lists his father's name as John but no mother's name. There were 5 John Gwin's in VA around this same time so we are having a time finding out which one was ours. What info do you have on Baysden himself? Joye

I have been trying to connect my gg-grandfather to Baysden for years. I have a lot of information on him, but cannot make a connection. My gg-grandfather was Thomas D. Gwin from Spartanburg S.C. I believe he was a grandson of Baysden. If any of you could help me I would be thankful.

I'm looking for info on my newly discovered GWIN line. Basden GWIN + Sarah or Sally MADDOX (daughter of John Maddox and Elizabeth ___ ) had a daughter Elizabeth GWIN who married Luke PANNELL in 1803 in SC. (Probably in Spartansburg Co. but I'm not sure of that.) Their son Christopher D. PANNELL married Sindrella (various spellings) in GA Mar 1839. I have a list of children for Basden GWIN that would indicate Sarah was still having children in her 50s. Could this be true? For Baysden the only info I have other than listed above is that he died June 06, 1845. All help appreciated! :)
Baysden GWIN would be my gggg-grandfather.
