Sources:
Most of the material on this page has come from Cousin Joni Fortier (my 5th cousin once removed) who just checked in this month--January 2007! What a great way to start the new year! There's much material here, and I decided to start a whole new page for it. Welcome, Joni, and thank you for sending all these goodies and giving your permission to post them here. Readers may contact her by emailing me, and I'll forward your mail to her.

A secondary source is Joni's own excellent page, located at http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~joni4ta/, from which we have taken and cropped these several photos, including the one of herself and her parents. Thanks again, Cousin!

And now at Christmas 2009, Joni's 2nd cousin (and my own 5th cousin once removed), Denise Davis, has checked in with a lot of data from her line which we've added below in this purple color.

In July 2011, I updated and expanded some of this material with data from the various census reports and Findagrave.com memorials, cited throughout.

BIOGRAPHY: From Page 400; Biographical sketches; History of Howard and Tipton Counties, 1883: John M. Denton, son of David and Emeline Denton, was born in North Carolina [John M. Gwin Note: I don't think this is our John M. Denton! Crawford Co., IN, is where he himself claimed in the 1850 census as his POB. Indeed, there are two John M. Dentons in the 1880 census of Indiana, and this bio aligns perfectly with one but not the other. This biographer seems to have listed the parents of "our" John M. as the parents of the "other" John M.!] March 21, 1847. He is of English-German descent, and is a nephew of the celebrated Geologist, William Denton of Philadelphia. [Joni Fortier Note: I believe this to be completely untrue as far as having this "Uncle William", as there is just no way possible, geographically or otherwise--for my gg-grandfather to have been related to William Denton the Geologist, b. in 1823 in England!] When he was 3 years of age his parents moved to Washington Co., IN, settled on a farm of 80 acres, and there died. At the age of 10, he removed to Orange County and there he attended what school he could during the winter and worked at farming during the summer. In 1862, he came to Howard County and worked for Oliver Moulder until his enlistment, in 1864, in the Indiana Volunteer Infantry, serving under Gen. Thomas. For 12 months he served faithfully, and was mustered out at Louisville, KY. Since his return he has been chiefly engaged in the saw and planing mill business. In 1870, he married Miss Martha Stratton, who died in 1879, the mother of two boys and two girls. Mr. Denton is a Mason, an Odd Fellow, a member of the G.A.R., and of the Friends' Society.

The father of the subject of this page, this is the same David Denton who bought land in Crowson's Cove (Sevier Co., TN) from Susanna Richardson in 1807 and who married Isham Gwin's daughter Elizabeth and moved here to Indiana. This is Minerva "Manervy" Gwin: widow of Elijah Wright; tenth-born child of Isham and Mary Canterbury Gwin; sister of Elizabeth Gwin who married David Denton (res. 35 above, this census); and also sister of John Gwin who moved to Alabama and is my ggg-grandpa. Either she has invited her mother, Mary, to move in with them to spend Mary's last years (see scenario below) or, more likely, she--now a widow herself--and her family have moved back to the old family farm (that Isham bought when they first moved to the area) to take care of her mother. When Mary dies in five years, Minerva will inherit and/or take over the farm.

In 2001, Cousin Doris Gyarmati posted on the Childers Family Forum that Minerva's husband's name is Elijah (see note immediately below).

This has to be our 24.05--William and Matilda Jones Denton, above, living next door to our George Denton here in Crawford Co.; clearly he was NOT b. in Missouri, however, so this must be an error on the part of the enumerator.

Interesting: she was b. in Crawford Co. and therefore probably was married there; their first five kids were b. in Orange Co., then they moved back to Crawford 5-7 years ago and had their last three. Did they follow Grandpa Isom and Grandma Mary to Orange Co., then she grew homesick?

BIOGRAPHY: From Page 400; Biographical sketches; History of Howard and Tipton Counties, 1883:
John M. Denton, son of David and Emeline Denton, was born in North Carolina March 21, 1847. He is of English-German descent, and is a nephew of the celebrated Geologist, William Denton of Philadelphia. **(I believe this to be completely untrue as far as having this "Uncle William" as there is just no way possible, geographically or otherwise - for my G-G-Grandfather to have been related to William DENTON the Geologist - born in 1823 in England!)** When he was 3 years of age his parents moved to Washington Co., IN, settled on a farm of 80 acres, and there died. In 1870, he married Miss Martha Stratton, who died in 1879, the mother of 2 boys and 2 girls. Mr. Denton is a Mason, an Odd Fellow, a member of the G.A.R., and of the Friends' Society.

Funeral of John Denton
Funeral services for the late John M. Denton, who died Friday night at 11 o'clock at the State Soldiers' Home in Lafayette, were held in this city this afternoon. Rev. E. T. Howe, pastor of the M.T. Church, officiated at services held at the Christian church, at 2 o'clock. Members of the Masons, Red Men, and G.A.R. post attended the services. Burial was at Bunnell cemetery. The body was brought to Frankfort Saturday evening and was taken to Comley undertaking parlors, where it remained until the hour of funeral today.
Apoplexy was the immediate cause of Mr. Denton's demise, although he has been failing in health for several months. His illness dated from the time of the Arbor Day celebration held in Frankfort two years ago. With a number of others, Mr. Denton was seated upon the speakers stand, at the southeast corner of the square, when the structure collapsed. He received an injury to his right leg which afterward developed gangrene. Finally the limb was amputated below the knee. Since then his condition gradually weakened. He entered the Soldiers' Home last May and visited the city once since then. Mr. Denton was a resident of Frankfort for many years, during a large part of which he was a member of the police force and was also a rural mail carrier. He was a policeman for 14 years, serving two years under Marshal Jones and under George W. Bird. He proved an efficient officer, and made a host of friends in the city. While engaged as a rural mail carrier he suffered a stroke of apoplexy. He left the service but returned later. Finally his failing health compelled him to retire from active work.
Although of southern birth, Mr. Denton served in the Union Army during the civil war. He first served as a member of the 57th Indiana Volunteers and after being mustered out, re-enlisted in Company I, 157th Indiana Volunteers with which he served during the remainder of the war. He was past 66 years old, having been born (sorry my program cut the rest of this obit off for some reason buty I can send you a scanned copy if you want it - just let me know)

Early Death records in Crawford Co. - Pre-1860 (DENTON, BOLT)

Classification: Query
Surnames: DENTON, BOLT
Does anyone know if there exists any documentation in an archive or something that may have records of deaths prior to the state requirement of 1882?
I am specifically looking for a David Denton, born 1817. I last found him in the Whiskey Run Twp. of Crawford County in the 1850 census with his wife Eliza Bolt. By 1860 both were dead. I am trying to figure out where they died and possibly buried. But it's been very difficult!!
All I know for sure is that they were in Crawford County, and owned 120 acres which were purchased in 1835, and they are in the 1850 census as well. David's brother lived in Whiskey Run in 1850, and their father lived in Orange County. David also purchased 40 acres in Harrison County, in 1838.
As late as 1854 I know they were still in Crawford County because their youngest child was born there.
Any suggestions?   Thank you.

Thanks for writing and making contact with us!

Have you met your second cousin Joni Fortier yet? She is the one who has contributed most to this page.  Her email address is on the page.  Her grandfather, John Marion, and your grandmother, Mary D., are brother and sister.

You and I are 5th cousins once removed. You and my children are 6th cousins to each other, and your daughter and son are my grandsons' 7th cousins!

Wow. That's pretty amazing, isn't it?  :-)

You can see their (and my) pictures at this site's home page:

www.zianet.com/jmcdgwin/genealogyhomepage.htm

You asked how you can help:

If you like, you can send me anything you want me to add to the page.  Then that part of the page will belong to you as well, and I will serve as your webmaster.  Whenever you want to add, revise, or delete something to/from your part, I'll be glad to do that for you.  As you can see from what Joni has already added, that could include photos,  names, dates, anecdotes--just about anything that will help other family members get to know their relatives.  I am a believer in putting as much as possible online so that others can find their family and contact us.  There is a limit, of course, to what some people want to add due to privacy and protection issues, and I understand and respect that, especially as it relates to living people.  Others, like myself, don't seem to mind putting out basic data.

So, having said that, please take a more careful look at the page and let me know what, if anything, you'd like to email me, Cousin!

:-)

I hope you and yours had a wonderful celebration of the Lord Jesus' birthday and am looking forward to hearing from you again soon.

Best to you,
In Him,
John

Hello John,

I was looking at info on your web, which I'd sent, and realized I had listed Nora May Thomas's  birth year as 1884, and it should be 1894. She is dau. of Rebecca Denton & Barnett Stalcup. Sorry.

God bless,
