[John M. Gwin Note: I have shamelessly copied this wonderful page verbatim from the Sevier County Library website in Sevierville, Tennessee, not for the purpose of detracting from that great site but in order to glean information from it that may be helpful to me in discovering more about my family.  I have altered the information to suit my research, primarily highlighting certain names.Their original page may be viewed at: http://www.sevierlibrary.org/genealogy/churchhis/BAM.htm.]

Introduction

A copy of the original 345-page handwritten manuscript entitled "Minutes of the Tennessee Association of United Baptists 1802-1862" in the Carson Newman College Library was transcribed and typed by Elaine R. Wells of Clabourne, Texas, courtesy of Mr. Al Lang, archivist. The typed 282-page document is now in the Carson Newman College Library.

The Tennessee Association Minutes record the activities of the association, the names of delegates from the churches, and whether or not the association received a letter from the church. The letter recorded the number of members received by experience or letter, the number of letters of dismission, the number of members excommunicated, the number of members deceased, and the total membership.

Family historians will find the names of many delegates whose names have not been preserved in census records.

The minutes begin with page 3 recording the plan of the association and end with the minutes of the October meeting in 1862.

Circular Letter, & c

The Tennessee Assn of Baptists Convened at Dumpling Creek Meeting House, Jefferson County October 3, 4, 5, & 6, 1805

To the Several Churches whom the represent, send Christian Salutation

Dear Brethren

Through the kind providence of God we have had another Interview together, and hope the Lord has borne with us from the Relation we stand in to you, the concern we feel for your welfare, write to you upon the pleasing Subject of Christian Union, though we have a striking view of the cold lifeless state of Religion

(21)
Oh! Brethren what would revive our hearts, and we believe yours also, more than to hear of the prosperity of Zion. Let us begin to examine the cause why the Lord has dealt thus with his Church, The Lord grant we may be able to move the Act an out of the Camp.

1st God is love, and if we draw our water from that sweet fountain, our words and works will be love.  let us pray more and dispute less, let us be careful not to fill one another's ears with the infirmities of our brethren, if any has a matter against his brother, go not to him in the heat of Spirit,  but pray God for a calm and loving frame of mind, that as God for Christs sake forgave you, ye might forgive one another; Bearing one anothers burdens and so fulfill the Law of Christ; For ye are called to the love of God in Christ Jesus, which is the Law ye are to be Judged by in the Gospel, and this must be the Moderator that Regulates in the Court of the great King of Zion, and When used by faith and prayer, supplies wants, and casteth outall fear. O! the Love of God in Christ Jesus, how happy is he that Enjoys it.

2nd--Dear brethren if we be the Salt of the earth, that City set on an hill for light, the pillar and Ground work of the living God; Consider our Calling what manner of beings we ought to be in all Holy Conversation and Godliness. Dear brethren let your Examples continually be useful lessons to mankind; Let holy sobriety and Godly Solemnity be Constantly written in your Countinances; above all, put Charity, which is the hand of perfectness, and let peace of God rule in your hearts. Live in the school of sympathy and learn condesention; "Do to all men as you would they should do to you"

3rd--Let not your seat be empty in the house of God, as it examps you rBrethren and your ministers, who are bound watchmen, for your souls are blighted, and thereby become feeble. It surely is duty rather to bear them up by your attention, prayers and freedom, without partial flattery for they are not only the called of God in Christ Jesus, but chosen angels to bear his peaceful messages to guilty Sinners; to defend the truth against gainsayers, silence to Ignorance of foolish men, to warn the unruly, comfort the feeble minded and support the weak.

4th--Let the intercession of Christ unlock every desire of the soul, like paul with Christ in your hearts To live and die for the Brethren, holding up the Hands that hand down, and Strengthen the feeble knees; Making Straight paths for your feet, lest that which is Lame be turned out of the way: be kindly affectionated one to another, forgiving one another, thereby will you be Able to Confront the Enemy -- But if divided, will devour one another and give the Enemy the advantage.

Our Minutes will Testify what we have done and now Dear Brethren, WE Commend you to God and the word of His Grace, Which is able to build you up and give You an Inheritance among them which are Sanctified.

Which may God grant for Christ's sake

AMEN

A Plan of the Tennessee Association & C

A Creed of Religious principles, being an Abstract from Jno Applunds Register, with some small Exceptions:

Article 1.--WE believe in one only true and living God, and That there are three persons in the Godhead, viz, the Father, The Son, The Holy Ghost

2d.--WE believe that the Scriptures of the Old and new Testaments, Are the word of God, and the only rule of all Saving Knowledge and Obedience.

(27)
3.--WE believe in the doctrine of Election, according to the foreknowledge of God.

4th--WE believe in the doctrine of Original Sin.

5th--WE Believe in Man's impotency to recover himself from the fallen State he is in, by his own free will ability.

Article 6th--WE believe that Sinners are Justified in the sight of God, only by the Imputed Righeousness of Jesus Christ.

7th--WE believe that the Elect, according to the foreknowledge of God will be called, Converted, Regenerated by the holy Spirit.

8th --WE believe that the Saints will perservere in grace and never fall finally away.

9th--WE believe that Baptism, and the Lord's Supper, are Ordinances of Jesus Christ, and that true Believers are the only Subject of these Ordinances; and that the true mode of Baptism is by immersion.

10th--WE believe in the Resurection of the dead & a General Judgement.

11th--WE believe that the punishment of the Wicked will be Everlasting, and that the Joys of the righteous will be Eternal.

12th--WE believe that no Minister have a right to the administration of the Ordinances, only such as are regularly called, and come under The imposition of hands by the presbytery.

WE hold it necessary to Associate in Council in Order to give Counsel to the Reflective Churches that compose this Assn.  In order to maintain our Christian fellowship.  Not as a Legislative body to impose Laws, or Excorcise any Supremacy.  Each Church being an independent body.

(28)
WE Are not an Association of ministers, but of Churches, Each Church being Represented by her delegates freely chosen.

Whereas Churches are Constituted Externally by the parties Entering into Mutual Agreement in Writing, to maintain the Worship of God accordingto gospel order, and refering To the Articles of their faith; So Churches by their delegates Constitute them Selves an Association, by the Confession of Their faith maintained to each Other

Circular Letter
The Tennessee Association to the respective Churches whom they represent, sendeth christian Salutation:
Very dear brethren in the Lord
As the Glory of God and Your Happiness is inseperably connected with our own, WE wish to address you on the important subject of The fellowship of the Saints.

1st  Its Origin--It is a Beam of light, flowing from that triune Deity, Through the mediator, by the operation of the Holy Ghost, teaching them to love one another: 1 Thessalonians 4th and 9th.  But as we are not come to a perfect man, of the fullness of Christ, as in Ephesians 4th. Let us endeavour to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bonds of peace. For weare all children of one family, having on(e) General parent, partakers of one Spirit of adoption, and heirs of the Same inheritance, therefore we wish to present you a few general rules of information on the subject; First.  Labor to maintain a soul communion with God in Christ, for the greater distance we are from the sun the less we feel of his influence.

2d  Never look for perfection in your brethren, nor neglect to deal with them when they err, nor deal with them untill you forgive from your hearts; Never Substitute your jealousies for evidence, nor Non-christian them in your minds, untill all due labors prove ineffectual for their recovery.

3d meet often in social prayer, and join all vocally in that great privilege of addressing your heavenly father
(33)
And you have his promise of answering your request.  On your fellowship, (as a means) depends the glory of God, the advancement of his kingdom, the Stoping the mouths of gainsayers, the encouragement of your Ministers, and the happiness will have the contrary Effect, which may God prevent, for Christ's sake---Amen-----farewell.

(42)--Circular Letter
The Elders and Brethren Composing the Tennessee Association,To the Respective Churches whom they represent, sendeth Christian Salutation.

Very dear Brethren in the Lord.

Having as you may see by our minutes, gone through the business that came before us, (One thing excepted) WE come not to address you on the necessity and Importance of family worship, We address you on this subject because we fear it is too much neglected by the professors of Christianity in general, or performed with too much indifference or legality of Spirit. Prayer is the breathing of the soul to God, as the fountain of all good, who alone can Grant us Spirit of Prayer, hence some are ready to conclude they are exempted from praying with their families because they lack the Spirit, and others because they have not the gift, But James says ye receive not, because ye ask not, James ch 4 vs 2.  But that it is the duty of all Christians to pray with their families, will appear from the following Considerations, viz.  The example of Christ praying alone, and his disciples were with him.  The example of Daniel 6 & 10th.  Of David's Psalms 92 & 182.  1st Peter 3 & 7th & C.  Time would fail us to cite you to all the examples in Scripture.  You are bound to it, 1st, from the Command of God, to teach them by example and precept.  2dly from the desire you have for their happiness.  3dly From the awful consequence threatened, for God to pour out his fury on the nations that know him not, and the families that call not on his name; and 4thly From the promises of God,that if any two of you shall agree in anything Ye shall ask it shall be done for you (43) Surely, surely there is no Father and Mother but what desires the happiness of their children both in time and Eternity.  Oh! then pray with and for them, and be assured that God will bless you according to his own promise, and as the poet says:
Blessed is the pious house, where zeal and friendship meet,
Their songs of praise, their mingled vows, make their communion sweet.
We exhort you to encourage one another to love and good work, Not only by living in peace between yourselves, But let the Wives pray in their turn, or at least to Lovingly invite and Encourage their husbands so to do.  Wishing you Grace, mercy and Peace, from God the Father and our Lord Jesus Christ, farewell.
