The
enumerator
misspelled the Hale name as Hail, but this is our family. Karen, it
looks to me like we have another generation back. Here are John and
Martha Hale living next door to our known William and Susan. I
highly suspect that they are William's parents. |

I
found Mildred in 1850 at age 12, I looked for any Mildred in the entire
county in 1860. Only one surfaced--and she's located nearby in the same
post office area as her parents: Pikeville. While I'm not
entirely confident yet that this is our Mildred, it will be interesting
to follow this Keeley family to see if they go with the Hales to Texas
or not. |

Based
on
the 1920 and 1930 census excerpts above, Alex's age is not correct
here. Possibly the enumerator misread 1892 as 1882 in his notes,
thereby producing this error. Since he is listed as slightly older than
Charles in 1930, perhaps the enumerator also misread July for Jan'y.
Karen, do you have the correct DOB for Alex? If Alex does actually fall between Mark and Charles in the birth order, that leaves a gap of some eleven years between Frank and Mark. This can be explained by Martha's report of the death of two of her children (five columns left and two rows up in this chart) and the possibility that at least one child may have married before the age of 20 and be living elsewhere. |

If this
is our Alex Hale, then this aunt of his, Mamie A. Swafford, must be
either (1) John R. Hale's little sister and likely the namesake for the
Mamie Hale listed in 1920 (above) as Lee Moore's granddaughter. And if
these things are true, then John R. Hale would likely be very near the
top of his sibllings' birth order and Mamie A. Swafford very near the
bottom, there being a gap of some 33 years between their ages! And now, having seen the 1880 census of Bledsoe Co., TN, I'm more confident than ever that this is indeed our Alex Hale, as there are several Swafford families living right next door to our Hales there in 1880. |

I
believe this to be Alex John's father, since (1) they live next door to
each other, (2) John R. and his parents are
from Tennessee, and (3) John Alex fits into the birth order perfectly
as the eldest child of John R. I believe the 1910 and 1900
censuses will bear this out. |
