GINGER:  Hello again! Thanks for your prompt reply - and you are a Christian also! Praise God!

JOHN:  AMEN!  Praise Him indeed!  (May I interpret your "also" and your enthusiasm as meaning that you are a believer as well?)

GINGER:  Zach was my mother's grandfather.  The children born to him and Addie Elam (Louisiana - daughter of John Pamplin Elam) were as follows, but not sure about the younger one's birth order.
Colan,

Oscar,
James Edward ( my grandfather born 1882),
Monroe,
Wesley,
Ira,
Martin ( Called by nickname, I think it was a nickname - Dick),and the only daughter was
Osceola.

JOHN:  OK, I'm going to try putting these names into my format--see below.

GINGER:  My grandfather and the two older brothers were born in White Sulphur Springs, La, but not sure about the others. Grandfather was not open about his family, and of course I was too young to be interested then.

JOHN:  Well, you've done a good job of compiling a good bit of data here, young lady!

GINGER:  Addie and Oscie, for short, lived in Beaumont, Tx, for many years, and are both buried there. Oscar died in Pineland, Tx; Colan around Dallas somewhere; Dick and Monroe in Houston. Ira died very young, and Wesley ran away at a young age, and there was never any contact thereafter.

JOHN:  The only record I can find of Zack in La is where he married Addie in 1876, in Cathoula Parish. I have this marriage license. Two Elam men, and Adaline Elam ( Addie's grandmother) signed as witnesses. No Wilsons were listed, and for this reason I feel none were present.

There is a Zach Wilson listed in Concordia Parish in 1870. This is rather strange. He is listed as being born in Ala: 45 years old; head of the household, and living with a Thomas Mooney, born in Ireland.  The strange part is for the nationality there is an "M". Now I know that usually means Mulatto, but the fact that he was head of household in 1870, and living with an Irishman indicates this must be a mistake.  I am wondering if the person taking this census wrote mistakenly wrote M for male twice. This side of my family were blond or red haired, blue or green eyed. Pretty sure this grandfather could not have been Mulatto, and my grandfather did tell his children that his father was full blood Irish.

So I don't know... confusing! Some family members remember Grandfather saying his grandfather's name was Thomas Wilson.

I have read that the Irish often gave their children four names. I will take a look at your web page and thanks again for writing.  Ginny

OK, here goes:

[John M. Gwin Note (5 Aug 2013):   When we first started this page in 2002, we knew of eight children. I didn't do anything else with the page for 11 years!  Today I blew the dust off and discovered the existence of Sylvester in the 1880 census, who appears there as their only child, five months old.  In the 1900 census, I learned that Sylvester and Colan/Colin/Colon have to be the same person.  Next I found the 1910 census, and, as stated above, Addie reports there that she has now had ten children, only five of whom are still living.  Unless another child was born--and died--before Sylvester, that means nine more children were born between 1880 and 1910.  We know that Osceola, William M.--(I'm speculating that this is Monroe, given the middle initial "M", but don't quote me yet), Martin, and Ira were still alive in 1910, so the fifth child still living must have been James.]

John, I would bet money (if I were a betting person) that this is my line.

I really have that feeling, too, Ginny!

Names familiar are as follows: Bryd, one of my grandfather's brother's middle name was Bryd - I think it was Oscar, but not sure.

Did you mean Byrd?  Burdine is close...

Monroe,

Yes.  I thought about Ezekiel Monroe Wilson often while studying your e.mail.  That's not UNcommon, perhaps, as James Monroe was a VERY popular president of the day.  But I haven't seen it very much--not like Wesley, James, George Washington, etc.

Wesley, James is common I know, but it fits, too; and Ezekiel of course.

I agree.

I did not find Zachariah in your line, but that could have come in from the other side.  Also, my grandmother used to say that Grandad had a lot of doctors in his family. That fits, too.

Well, Zachariah is an old Bible name, and since Ezekiel Burdine and Nathaniel Burdine (and maybe Jonathan) were all named for Bible characters, it makes sense to me to speculate that any other brothers they'd have would also have Bible names.  Zachariah, then, could've been his father's name (of course, Thomas was one of Jesus' disciples, too...).

You have an awesome site! I have saved it to 'my favorites' for future reference.

Thanks for the kind words...              :-)

What do you know, if anything, about James Washington Wilson, who lived in Franklin, or Marion Parish, La? This gets close to home!!!

Yes, that is very interesting.  I know no more than what is there (on my site) at this point, but rest assured we're going to build a page for your line (with your permission, of course) pointing out all these speculative proximitudes, and let's see what pops to the surface! May I?

 thanks, ginny

Thank YOU, Lady!         :-)

In Jesus,
John
