John and Jim, I was researching Isham
Gwin Walker's children on Ancestry.com, and stumbled on this
line of Gwin descendents.
Isham
Gwin
Walker (s.o. Thomas Walker Jr. and Polly Gwin) had a daughter
named Susannah Walker, b. 1839, who married an Edward
Moore, b. 1819. in Martin County, IN in 1869. They had several
children, one of whom they named after his great-great-grandfather Isom
Gwin. He had two sons, Roy and Rex in 1899 and
1902. Apparently they moved to Kansas between 1910 and 1920.
Did you
guys know about this line? It is easy to trace it via census data. -- Mike Walker, Mar 2006 |

[Taffy's contributions appear

John,
...I am the daughter
of Thurston T. Walker
(and Emma Cross), son of Thomas Thurston Walker (and Mabel
Tweeten),
son of Thomas Thurston Walker (and Bertha Weedman) , son of Isom Gwin
Walker II (and Margaret Childers), son of Isom Gwin Walker I (and
Clarissa Thurston)...
Taffy
The first (25.09--) Thomas Thurston Walker
(as you know) was the son of Isham (sp?) Gwin Walker, Sr., and Clarissa
Thurston. He was born in 1854 in Indiana, married Lucinda Riley,
and died in Illinois 1926. He established the Walker line from
which Mike Shelby Walker descended. According to the way Ancestry.com
calculates relationships, this Thomas Thurston Walker is my
gg-granduncle. When I first started working on my genealogy, I
had a hard time not mixing him up with my great grandfather and may
have incorrectly attached censuses, records, etc placing his death in
Indiana -- I think I have fixed this now.
The second (26.04--)
Thomas
Thurston Walker was my great-grandfather who was the child of Isham
(sp?) Gwin Walker, Jr., and Margaret Childers. He was born in
Indiana (maybe Boone or Martin Co.) in 1881 and married Bertha Weedman
(of Pike Co, IN) in 1905. By the 1910 Census, "Big Tom" Walker
(he was a mountain-sized man) and Bertha were living in Adams Co., ND, with their 3-year-old
son (my grandfather),
(27.01--) Thomas
Thurston Walker II and younger sons Robert and Paul. Also living
with them was another man, 28-y-o Osker (Elmer) Louis who had come from
Indiana with Big Tom. (Mr. Louis appears on all the censuses for
1910-1940 with Big Tom as a farmhand, but I wish I knew whether there
was some other connection, as this is an awful long time to work for
someone with little or no pay -- he is just another unsolved mystery.)
Big Tom was also
accompanied in his move from Indiana to North Dakota by his parents,
Isham Gwin Walker, Jr., and Margaret Childers Walker, as you can see in
the 1910 Census. Although I had very little from my father on our
genealogy, I do remember that when I was in my later teens, my dad told
me that he knew his great-grandparents had lived in a "soddy" in North
Dakota. If this is true, I can understand a rationale for why
they ended up buried in Virginia: their eldest daughter, Laura
Emily Walker (wife of Fred Hagen) who also appears in the 1910 Census
in Hettinger, ND, moved to Virginia. Conditions in ND were very
bad, and perhaps when she moved to Virginia, she also moved her elderly
parents with her hoping to improve life for those elderly folks,
too. Unless you have other information, I place their final
resting places in New Kent Co., Virginia (quite a change in terrain
from ND!!) Laura and her husband seemed to have done well in VA,
and she is (I believe) buried in Richmond, VA. (She had daughters, but
I have not figured out who in that line to contact -- another
genealogy project to work out.)
But I digress.
By the end of the 1930s life in ND had taken its toll on the Walkers,
and they were shattered and scattered. Bertha with all of her
young daughters can be found in the 1940s Census for Portland,
OR. Most of the Walker sons pulled up stakes and relocated to
Oregon or other western states. Big Tom Walker was still in ND on
the farm in ND in the 1940 Census, living with his son (27.07--) Lynn and Lynn's wife (also) named
Bertha and the ever faithful, Oscar Louis. I do not know where
Big Tom is buried or exactly when he died, but my mother recalls that
he had cancer, and Bertha, his wife, returned from Oregon to nurse him
at the end -- but I don't know if she is right.
Big Thomas Thurston
Walker and Bertha Weedman had 11 children in ND. Their eldest, my
grandfather, was named (27.01--) Thomas Thurston Walker, born
1906. Since his father was called Tom, he was called
Thurston. Thurston married Mabel Tweeten, and together they had 5
sons and 1 daughter My father (called Tom) was the eldest son and
through an error was named (28.01--) Thurston Thomas Walker. (See
above) When Mabel was pregnant with my Uncle Billy, Thurston
deserted his wife and family in ND and moved to Oregon were he died in
1967. My father was the only one who had any contact with the "Oregon
Walkers", and after he died in 2010, I realized I knew next to nothing
about my kin. I never met my grandfather Thurston or my
great-grandmother Bertha, although they lived in Oregon until the mid
1960s. It would be nice to close the chasm, but I might be too
late for this life.
So, this is my (sad)
story of the four Thomas Thurston Walkers. I hope it contributes
in some small way to your continued genealogical study. Let me
know if any thing is inconsistent with your data.

OBITUARY
David Albert Walker passed
away on Wednesday, September 26, 2012, at
St. Alphonsus Hospital in the arms of his two children, Jody and
Justin.
David was born on February 15, 1952, in Emmett, Idaho,
to Charles and Pearl Walker as the oldest of four children. During his
early childhood his family lived throughout Idaho, Oregon and Montana.
In eighth grade his family returned to Emmett.
As a teen, Dave
worked for Sanders Farms, ran track, and was a member of the high
school
choir. After a year at Boise State University, Dave was married and
returned to Oregon to pursue his dreams.
At the age of 20 Dave
began his career for Tektronix, Inc. He obtained an Honorary
Doctorate
from Oregon State University. Dave was a Corporate Industrial
Engineering Manager. His successes allowed him to fulfill his dreams of
owning a boat to fish in and a cabin at the beach.
He took an
early retirement after 20 years with Tektronix. His passion for
boats
led him on a new career path, selling for Bayliner.
David was
a single father to his two children and raised them with unconditional
love and support. David returned to Emmett in 1992 and later met
his
loving wife, Dorothy, at church. They were wed in 2002, and he acquired
three stepchildren and four grandchildren, all of whom he treated as
his
own. He retired from sales in 2008.
His years of retirement
were spent with his wife, mom, children, and grandchildren, boating,
fishing and camping. Our beloved dad put all others before
himself. He
was tenderhearted and adored his family. We all know how much he
loved
us, which is the greatest gift he could have ever left behind.
Dad
was charming, gracious, generous, and humble. He loved God, and
we are
comforted that we will be together again in eternity. He was a
big guy,
with a contagious smile, a huge heart and a love for small things, like
his darling camper, the "marsh mellow". He was truly adored by
his
family. He was a one-in-a-million dad, "Papa", husband, son,
brother
and friend. We are brokenhearted to lose him unexpectedly and at such
a young age. We will carry on his legacy of love and loyalty.
David
is survived by his wife, Dorothy; his mother, Pearl Walker; his
children,
Jody (Kelly), Scott, and Justin (Amber) Walker; stepchildren, Shawn,
Angelina, and Forrest; grandchildren, Jack Burke, Cody Scott, Kaden,
and
Logan Walker, Aubrey and Mathew Williams, Allyson and Amanda Nida;
siblings, Coleen Matuska, Carl and Darrell Walker; and many nieces and
nephews.
He was preceded in death by his father, Charles Edward Walker, and his
best friends and cousins, Allen and Brad Walker.
A celebration of life will be held October 14 at 2:30 p.m. at Wild Rose
Park in Emmett, Idaho.

records support a birth date of about 1833. In the 1850 census she
reported a birthdate of abt 1833 (age 17 in 1850 Martin Co., Rutherford
Twp., IN). She and John already have a one-year-old child, Eliza. According to
my cousin Pam Green (I think that is where the 1825 date came from) there
is
a
marriage
certificate
for
Manerva
Walker and John Williams Simmons
as follows: Married: 10 Dec 1846 in Martin Co., IN -- Marriage License: 12 Oct 1846 in Martin Co., IN. This would make her 13 years old at the
date of marriage. If she was born after Anderson (say 1834) she would
only have been 12 in 1846. My conclusion is that cousin Pam is wrong
and the census is right. (I guess she could have married at age 13,
though! I hope not.)]
[John M. Gwin
Note: Minerva
is named in the probate of Isham Gwin's will. We know that the
probate
occurred after his wife's (Mary Canterbury Gwin's)
death,
and
we
know
that Mary Canterbury Gwin
was
alive in the 1850 census. I think this means that Minerva was
alive at
least as late as 1850.]

Note:
a search of
the 1910 federal
census via Ancestry.com for
any wife by the name of Jara or Jora having been born in Indiana in 1885-1887 produced only one hit: Mrs. Walter (mistranscribed as "Wattie" by Ancestry.com)
Williams of the
city of Franklin, Franklin Township, Johnson Co., IN. She and her
husband of eight years have only one child living of one born, a son,
age 8, Charlton. Further,
Walter's widowed father is living with them: Mr. Isaac Williams. While not
guaranteeing this to be our Jara Simmons, it does seem very likely.

a search of

census via Ancestry.com for
any Wallace Simmons having been born in Indiana in 1891 produced only one hit: Wallace
Simmons, single, a hired man living with the William A. Barnett family
in White River, Gibson Co., IN, the same town where his family lived in
1910. This is almost surely our Wallace. |

[Eliza A. S. Simmons reported in the 19
Jun 1900 census of
Decker Twp., Knox Co., IN, that she bore five children, four of whom
still lived then, and since the largest gap in the birth order was
here, I'm guessing that the deceased was her fourthborn.]

Because
of
the
dates
of
birth
being
several years off, I'm not quite convinced
yet that the family of this George H. Davidson from the 1880-1930
censuses, below, is ours, so I'm listing them in the following format
for now to see if there are any clues in later years (and no, I didn't
find any--still doesn't mean that they are not the same family as ours,
though).

[John M. Gwin
Note: "Huston"
is named in the probate of Isham Gwin's will. We know that the
probate
occurred after his wife's (Mary Canterbury Gwin's)
death,
and
we
know
that Mary Canterbury Gwin
was
alive in the 1850 census. I think this means that Huston was
alive at
least as late as 1850.]
