OBITUARY
Harry August Sostman,
96, of Manchester, died
Friday (April 17, 2009) at
his home.
Harry was born on July 10,
1912 in St. Louis, MO, the
oldest son of the late
Herman and Carrie (Bickell)
Sostman. He grew up in the
Hill neighborhood of St.
Louis with the likes of Joe
Garagiola and Yogi Berra as
neighbors. He, too, played
baseball in his late teens,
pitching and playing third
base for a local St. Louis
team. He was an avid
baseball and hockey fan all
of his life, and had a
passion for coin collecting,
which he shared with his
granddaughter, Mary Alice.
A
World War II Veteran, Harry
first served with Battery A,
239 AA (Searchlight) Bn, and
was stationed with a
searchlight battalion on
Hillstown Road in Manchester
in 1942. While serving
there, he contacted Alice
Lewis, the sister of one of
his best friends from St.
Louis, who was then living
in New York City. After a
few dates, they married on a
weekend pass, and she
remained the love of his
life even after her death in
August, 1999.
On
his return from the service,
Harry was employed by Cheney
Brothers in their dye house,
leaving there to go to work
as a driver for H. J. Heinz
in East Hartford and then to
East Hartford Warehouse as a
forklift operator. He was a
longtime member of
Teamster's Local 559. He
retired in 1972.
A
wonderful, gentle, loving
friend, brother, husband,
father, Papa and Great-Papa,
Harry will be deeply missed
by his children, Harriet
Sostman Abraham and her
husband Jerry of Syracuse,
NY, Ellen Sostman Laramie of
Bolton, Raymond Laramie of
Glastonbury, James R.
Sostman and his wife Laurrie
of Bloomfield, and his
neighbor Audrey Grande, who
was like a daughter to him.
He
greatly loved and was adored
by his nine grandchildren
and their spouses, Melissa
Ongur and her husband Dost,
Sasha Stein and her husband
Aaron, Hope Hudson and her
husband Steve, Mark Abraham,
Joshua Abraham, Angela
Laramie, Mary Alice Laramie,
Thomas Conroy and Greg
Conroy.
He
was extremely proud of his
four great-grand children,
Lily and Henry Stein and
Derin and Dilan Ongur.
Harry remained close to and
is survived by two brothers
and sisters-in-law, Jim and
Marilyn Sostman and Bob and
Shirley Sostman, his sister
Mary Gwaltney, his sister
and brother-in-law, Peggy
and Jim LaHaye, his
sister-in-law Imogene

6 ch.; 8 grch.;
Hello. We are Jerry
and Harriet Abraham
(gen. 29). We
have been finding so
much information in your
postings. Thank
you. My wife is
descended from Thomas
Walker and Polly
Gwin. [The Thomas
Walker (gen. 24)
pictured on the website
(b. ca. 1857) looks a
lot like Harry Sostman
did to his family, so we
were able to determine
they are 1st cousins, 4
times removed.]
There are two more
generations on our line
to add after gen. 29 in
your lists :) --six in
gen 30 and eight (so
far) in gen. 31!
But
the reason I write,
other than to say hello
and thank you, is to ask
if you have found any
further data on the
Robert J. Wright
ancestry. We have
reached a dead end as
far as documentation
goes. If you have
not, have you found any
sources on that, or on
the Collins Family?
Specifically, although
several of these lines
go back to revolutionary
times, we have been
trying to see if any of
these branches--Walker,
Gwin, Wright,
Collins--had any
patriots documented as
daughters or sons of the
American Revolution?
You
are of course welcome to
look at our ancestry
site, if you haven' t
already, and if we can
help with any data,
please let us know.
Best regards,
Jerry Abraham, Oct 2017

Note: James is named in the
probate of Isham Gwin's will. We know
that the probate occurred after his wife's
(Mary Canterbury Gwin's) death, and we know
that Mary Canterbury Gwin was alive in the
1850 census. I think this means that
James was alive at least as late as
1850. In the 1820 census he is
somewhere between ages 0 and 9, making him
somewhere between ages 30 and 39 in 1850,
old enough to have a large family. And
so we keep those possibilities open here.]

Today, 22 Oct 2016, I

changed the birth order
of Anderson to NINTH],
changing those three
formerly located "below"
him in this table to 6th
(Mahala), 7th (Minerva),
and 8th (Houston).
Notice that while I was
able to make this change
easily in the
summary list located at
the top of this table, I
have not been able to
figure out how to change
the order in this table
itself! Therefore,
I have changed all the
NUMBERS but not the
actual position in the
table.
Sorry. I hope this
is not too confusing for
you, dear reader.]

Barn Farm where all the grandchildren
loved to spend time with Gram in the
orchard.
Ora had many life-long friends and
family who she shared her love and
interests with, some of which included
antiques and yard sales, oil painting
and crafts, quilting and taking drives
to the cabin or around the local
countryside to enjoy the beauties of
nature.
Survivors include husband, Dan Ellis;
sister, Opal (Gary) Silveria; sons, Greg
(Kathy) Walker and Rod (Karrie) Walker;
seven grandchildren; and 13

OBITUARY
David
Albert Walker passed
away
on Wednesday, September 26, 2012,
at St. Alphonsus Hospital in the
arms of his two children, Jody and
Justin.
David was born on February 15,
1952, in Emmett, Idaho, to Charles
and Pearl Walker as the oldest of
four children. During his early
childhood his family lived
throughout Idaho, Oregon and
Montana. In eighth grade his
family returned to Emmett.
As a teen, Dave worked for Sanders
Farms, ran track, and was a member
of the high school choir. After a
year at Boise State University,
Dave was married and returned to
Oregon to pursue his dreams.
At the age of 20 Dave began his
career for Tektronix, Inc.
He obtained an Honorary Doctorate
from Oregon State
University. Dave was a
Corporate Industrial Engineering
Manager. His successes allowed him
to fulfill his dreams of owning a
boat to fish in and a cabin at the
beach.
He took an early retirement after
20 years with Tektronix. His
passion for boats led him on a new
career path, selling for Bayliner.
David was a single father to his
two children and raised them with
unconditional love and
support. David returned to
Emmett in 1992 and later met his
loving wife, Dorothy, at church.
They were wed in 2002, and he
acquired three stepchildren and
four grandchildren, all of whom he
treated as his own. He
retired from sales in 2008.
His years of retirement were spent
with his wife, mom, children, and
grandchildren, boating, fishing
and camping. Our beloved dad
put all others before
himself. He was
tenderhearted and adored his
family. We all know how much
he loved us, which is the greatest
gift he could have ever left
behind.
Dad was charming, gracious,
generous, and humble. He
loved God, and we are comforted
that we will be together again in
eternity. He was a big guy,
with a contagious smile, a huge
heart and a love for small things,
like his darling camper, the
"marsh mellow". He was truly
adored by his family. He was
a one-in-a-million dad, "Papa",
husband, son, brother and friend.
We are brokenhearted to lose him
unexpectedly and at such a young
age. We will carry on his
legacy of love and loyalty.
David is survived by his wife,
Dorothy; his mother, Pearl Walker;
his two children, Jody (Kelly)
Scott, and Justin (Amber) Walker;
stepchildren, Shawn, Angelina, and
Forrest; grandchildren, Jack
Burke, Cody Scott, Kaden, and
Logan Walker, Aubrey and Mathew
Williams, Allyson and Amanda Nida;
siblings, Coleen Matuska, Carl and
Darrell Walker; and many nieces
and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his
father, Charles Edward Walker, and
his best friends and cousins,
Allen and Brad Walker.
A celebration of life will be held
October 14 at 2:30 p.m. at Wild
Rose Park in Emmett, Idaho.

Civil War veteran of Co. F, 1st
Indiana Heavy Artillery, b. unk.; d.
27 Jul 1862 in Martin Co., IN, bd.
Pleasant Valley Cem., Martin Co.,
IN. While the memorial lists his
birth as being unk., the photo of the
gravestone shows that it was once
broken off (the exposed stub still
shows), probably by vandals, then
later reinserted into the ground, the
bottom portion of the stone being
hidden in the ground. Nevertheless,
the words "DIED July 27, 1862, AGED
17..." do show, and it is assumed that
if the photographer had scraped away a
little of the dirt, one could have
seen James Farris' entire age in
years, months, and days, as was common
in the day. That he was 17,
however, places his DOB at about 1845,
the same as our James, so I believe this is
the grave of our cousin, son of
Mahala Walker Farris Chandler, and
grandson of Thomas and Polly Gwin
Walker. No other
Farris surnames are listed as being
buried in that cemetery.]

Ancestry.com lists a Nancy
E. Farris as having
married on 12 Feb 1873 in
Dubois, Dubois Co., IN, to Samuel
P. McCain. While
we have no proof yet that this
is our Nancy, Dubois County is
immediately south of Martin
and west of Orange, so the
geography fits. And if
she is ours, her age at this
marriage would have been about
23, so that fits as well.]

[John M. Gwin Note:
This leaves a discrepancy with the DOB of
24.06 Anderson Walker, above, b.
<1832>; therefore, perhaps the birth
order is wrong or he is a different Anderson
Walker.]
[Mike Walker Note: John and Jim, I noted the
discrepancy in birth order, too. I think the
census records support a birth date of about
1833. In the 1850 census she reported a
birthdate of abt 1833 (age 17 in 1850 Martin
Co., Rutherford Twp., IN). She and John
already have a one-year-old child, Eliza. According to my cousin Pam
Green (I think that is where the 1825 date
came from) there is a marriage
certificate for Manerva Walker and John
Williams Simmons as follows:
Married: 10 Dec 1846 in
Martin Co., IN -- Marriage
License: 12 Oct 1846 in Martin Co., IN.
This would make her 13
years old at the date of marriage. If she
was born after Anderson (say 1834) she would
only have been 12 in 1846. My conclusion is
that cousin Pam is wrong and the census is
right. (I guess she could have married at
age 13, though! I hope not.)]

While not guaranteeing

Because
of the dates of birth being several
years off, I'm not quite convinced
yet that the family of this George
H. Davidson from the 1880-1930
censuses, below, is ours, so I'm
listing them in the following format
for now to see if there are any
clues in later years (and no, I
didn't find any--still doesn't mean
that they are not the same family as
ours, though).

Note: "Huston" is named in
the probate of Isham Gwin's will. We
know that the probate occurred after his
wife's (Mary Canterbury Gwin's) death, and
we know that Mary Canterbury Gwin was alive
in the 1850 census.
I think this means that Huston was alive at
least as late as 1850.
SURE ENOUGH! Today, 31 Mar 2016, we
found him in the same 1860
census as (and just across town from) his
dad and stepmom--see 1860
census references immediately above.]
