Page Returned to Online Status 2 Dec 2020

The following outlines are an attempt to consolidate the information--most of which is transcribed after the outline--I inherited from Uncle James Basset Gwin.  Some of it--certainly the earliest generations--comes from  Ms. Nancy Perryman Waters (see this source below) and my late second cousin Jack Vardaman; other comes from other of my cousins.  Bits and pieces have been gleaned from undocumented sources.

DISCLAIMER:

Cousins and other relatives and readers, some of whom may be my brothers and sisters in Christ--friends all:

           Please know that for a very long time this Vining page has lain dormant and served as an offline clearinghouse for various Vining-related items I have found and/or been sent.  Parts of it are more organized and documented than others.  Much of it may be confusing to you and not seem to fit into your line or tree.  Some of it probably may be just flat wrong.
          So though I am returning it to online status today to make what information I have available to the family, under no circumstances should anyone take ANY of this information as true and correct.  As with any genealogical research, consider this page as hearsay only until you

DO YOUR OWN HOMEWORK!

Research and document anything you find of interest before taking anything from the page.

          Further, with my thanks in advance, I do request your assistance with fixing anything you find that may be confusing, unclear, incorrect, incomplete, repetitive, out of order, misspelled, offensive, etc.  Please be sure to include the URL (address) to this page with any communication, as I have hundreds of such pages online and may need all the help I can get in finding the right one.

        Also, please be on the lookout for the names of any persons who are still living.  My intent for those persons is to list them by name only and with the label "[PRIVATE]".  Should you find any names of living persons with other vital data listed, PLEASE CONTACT ME--thanks.
         Finally, if  you find anything that applies to you or your immediate living family that you do not want posted online, please let me know, and I'll remove it.  Thanks again!

FAG BIO for JEHU
            DOB: "Abt. 1780"   Note: I do not know if 1780 is correct... or a transcription error. I've seen both 1780 and 1790 cited in various family trees. However, if his wife's DOB of 1780 is correct, I'm guessing 1780 is correct for him.
            No DOD is listed.
            Jehu was the son of Shadrack and Phereby (Ratcliff) Vining, and he married Sarah Williams 26 Jul 1810 in Morgan Co., Georgia.

ROGERS KILLS THRASHER...
            M. Thrasher, a share cropper on the farm of L. C. Rogers about six miles east of Ashland, was shot five tmes by a revolver in the hand of Rogers Tuesday morning and died immediately after the shooting.  Rogers came to Ashland and gave himself up to the sheriff and was placed in jail to await his preliminary hearing here tomorrow (Friday) morning.  It seems that Rogers and Thrasher had been having trouble all during the year, and the trouble was aggravated Tuesday over the gathering of the crop, culminating in the death of Thrasher.  It is a very sad affair.  Thrasher is survived by a wife and several children. Rogers also has a wife.
CARD OF THANKS...To Our Many Friends:
            We wish to thank you for the kindness shown us at the death of our dear husband and father, also for the nice box we received from the Ashland friends.  We shall never forget the wonderful way you proved to be our friends in this sad hour of trouble.

(note that a daughter of Edwy Vardaman, son of Thomas Vardaman, had a daughter named "Zylpha Thommie Hollaway Vardaman, evidently named for this Zilpha Vining)."

             Pages 31A and 32A: Vardaman Family History
             Compiled by 27.01--James B. Gwin

The following is a copy of a letter written to my mother [John M. Gwin Note--unk. date: Mrs. Adrian Belle Vardaman Gwin, my grandmother] by Leon A. Nolen of 1609 12th St., Birmingham, AL, on 29 Sep 1944.

"Dear distant cousins:
             "As you know, I have been interested in my family line in order to know whence they came and what contributions they made in the times in which they lived. We have the Vining line in common.
             "About three or four years ago, I visited for a short while with Miss Annie Vardaman and her father, John T. Vardaman in Sylacauga, Alabama.  At that time I knew very little of the Vining Family; since, however, I have found records which show our relationship. At that time Mr. John T. Vardaman told me that Mr. John Forsythe Vardaman [JOHN GWIN Note: my great-grandfather], father of Mrs. [Adrian Belle Vardaman] Gwin and Mrs. [Maggie Mae Vardaman] Webb, along about 1870 or 1880 wrote down in a book--a buckskin or calfskin back, I remember he said--a history of the different family connections--the Vardamans and Vinings, etc.    Cousin Maggie [JOHN GWIN Note: the aforementioned Mrs. Webb] tells me that there was such a book her father had, but she is unable to locate it. If that book could be found, it certainly would throw a lot of light on things that may be now forever lost. I should like very much to see it in reference to the Vining family. If possible it would be found, we are beginning to think more of our lineage now than formerly."

(Note: this book has never turned up and is evidently lost forever--James B. Gwin)

(note that a daughter of Edwy Vardaman, son of Thomas Vardaman, had a daughter named "Zylpha Thommie Hollaway Vardaman, evidently named for this Zilpha Vining.)

Also some names are given which are not found in the other records that I have. Children of Thomas Vardaman and Annie Vining:

Edwy L. Vardaman b. in Newberry District, SC, 1804;
Jane E. Vardaman, b. 22 Mar 1821;
Thomas Jefferson Vardaman, b. 4 Apr 1828;
Peter Lafayette Vardaman, b. 11 Feb. 1830; and
Ruth.

This letter states that evidently there were a number of other children as the records are missing from the time of their marriage until 1821. He states that Ruth was old enough to join the Crooked Creek Church in Putnam Co., GA, indicating that Ruth was born early in the marriage. This letter states that Annie Vining Vardaman is buried in an unmarked grave near Sylacauga AL, in Mount Olive Cem. A brother of Annie Vining, Jehu, who was born in 1790, is buried in the old Acker Cem. in Bibb Co. (it doesn't say if this is GA or AL.).

The name of a Mr. Greer is given as a descendent of a Rev. Jeptha Vining.

I have the name of a Mrs. Gladys J. Busby, (Mrs. Gearge M. Busby) of Rt. 1 Box 160, Chandler, Arizona, dated 1955, as being a relative of the marriage of Annie Vining and Thomas Vardaman, who has collected some genealogy on this family.

The following names are found in Coosa County Cemeteries Records, a copy of which is to be found in the Archives of Auburn University, and are believed to related to the Family of John Forsythe Vardaman. Information taken from cemetery headstones and from Vol. #1 pages 150, 151, and 131:

S. M. HARRIS
            S. M. Harris, one of the oldest men in the community, died here the 13th of February and was buried at Camp Springs Church on the 14th. He was born in Atlanta, GA, in 1854, moved to Cleveland Co. in 1862, and spent his life near here. He was married 8 Dec 1875 to Mary V. Varnell and joined the Methodist church in 1878.  Many testify to the fact that he was a Christian gentleman and that he died in the Father.
            He left Mrs. Mary V. Harris--his widow, and the following children to mourn his loss: Mrs. Ara Reed of Rison; Mrs. Francis Golden; William, Carl, and Floyd Harris all of Kingsland; Alice Allen of Bleeker; and Robert Harris of Manning.
            Bro. Harris joined the Freewill Baptist Church in 1894. He was a kind father, loving husband, friend, neighbor, citizen; and a Christian.  May his friends and loved ones attain to a home in the mansion of God.

"One by one our friends are called from earth by life,
And they journey by our side no more.
One by one they cross the solemn river,
Going over on the other shore.
One by one familiar tones grow silent,
One by one dear forms are hid from sight,
But as far, beyond the chilling shadows,
Those we cherished dwell in Heaven's light.
One by one sweet voices swell the anthem,
Ringing thru the city built on high,
One by one glad souls gain life eternal
In that home where none shall ever die.     --CABE

        According to Clarence E. Ratcliff--John and Ann Farmer Ratcliff had a daughter named Sarah. In his earlier works, there was a question as to this Sarah being married to John Vining.   In Clarence's 1066-1988 book, John and Ann's daughter, Sarah, was born 29 Aug 1749, Johnston Co., NC. Disowned by Cane Creek MM 2 Feb 1799, for marrying out of unity. Mentioned in her father's will of 1790. Sarah died 16 May 1828, buried Greensboro, NC. No mention of whom she married.
