THE ROGERS AND McDONALD FAMILIES IN EARLY CALDWELL COUNTY
Narrator:  Elwood Rogers, 68, of Hamilton, Missouri

The interview with Mr. Rogers is quite important because he is a great grandson of Jeremiah McDonald who made the first land entry in Caldwell County in the present Rockford Township 1832.  Moreover Mr. Rogers is a son of George F. Rogers who in the period 1860-85 was widely known as a Mason and a well-to-do sporting gentleman of the community north of town.

Jeremiah McDonald never lived in Caldwell County, but lived at the foot of the Devil's Backbone in Ray County and died there after the Civil War.  He was a well known character, especially for his frugality, living poorly in spite of his large land holdings.  In 1839 Randolph his son entered a quarter section in this county.  Part of the present Rogers farm north of Hamilton is land entered by him.

He had two daughters; one, Lockie, married George Rogers, and the other, Eliza, married Haman Hemry of North of Hamilton.  When George Rogers came to this vicinity, he lived in a log cabin which is still standing in part on the Rogers farm.

Elwood, the son of George lived for awhile in his youth near Lisbonville a village less than one hundred yards south of the Caldwell County line, with his grandfather Randolph McDonald who lived near the south line of Rockford township in the county.  The common name for Lisbonville then was "Chicken Bristle" or "the Bristle."  This little hamlet became a dead town when the Milwaukee railroad went through the south part of the county and the post office moved from Lisbonville to Elmira.

Elwood's uncle by marriage was Haman Hemry who was the son of Abraham Hemry--an early settler (1856) in this county and quite a queer fellow.  Abraham loaned money and had many notes on people in Daviess, Caldwell and Ray Counties.  He used to ride around collecting interest, his notes stuffed in saddle bags. If a man could not pay interest, Hemry would stay at his house and board it out.  Haman's brother Issac was mysteriously murdered near Kidder 1885--a murder never solved.  But the most interesting of all Elwood Roger's kin was his father George F. Rogers, a son of George Rogers, a pioneer of Daviess County.  Swarthy, tall and erect, he affected a wide-rimmed black hat of the southern type, Prince Albert coat, heavy watch chain and flowing ties.  He was a ladies man by instinct and manner.  He was self educated to such a degree that he became Deputy Grand State Lecturer for the Masonic Lodge.  A farmer by blood and living but he hired most of the work done.

He was an old fiddler and loved to play for dances.  When he died he left his fiddle to Bob Bryant.  He wanted it to go to a good fiddler and his son did not play.  In his youth he used to ride clear from Rockford Township twelve miles up to Daviess county to dances.  It was at a dance he met his future wife from Rockford township.  In this connection, it may be said that girls too rode long distances to attend dances, spending the night, while young men went home after the dances.

The following story shows George Rogers, the hot-tempered fire eater.  He had a little trouble with a fellow named Harrah who worked for him on the farm, and fired him.  Harrah came back and "agged" him into a quarrel.  Finally he invited Rogers to bring out his shooting irons.  Rogers replied with a motion of his fists that they were the only shooting irons he needed.  Finally he got his revolver and they shot it out.  It ended in the wounding of Harrah.  Rogers rode to town after a doctor and paid the bill and gave himself up but no action was ever taken.  Afterwards, the two men being Mason made up their quarrel. Interviewed 1933.  (See also the story of George Rogers by S.R. Guffey.)

She was united in marriage to James McDonald July 13, 1879. To this union thirteen children were born, the husband and four children having preceded her in death: Kinsey Joseph, age 13; Sarah Elizabeth, age 19; George Arthur, age 2; and Charles Wilford, age 7.
She was united with the M. E. Church at Waggoners Chapel in 1892 and lived a model christian. she was a kind mother, a faithful wife, a splendid example of a good citizen, neighbor and friend. The community through this death has suffered a loss.
She took suddenly ill on September 3, on November 11 she submitted to an operation for gall stones and seemed to be regaining her health for the first five weeks. Later it became evident that her condition was serious. The children were kind and attentive to her and made her last days as pleasant as possible.
She told her children many times that th way was bright, and that she wanted her children to live happy and meet her.
It can be truly said of Mrs. McDonald that she was a friend to man. she was always found in the sick rooms of her friends and neighbors doing what she could.
But we mourn not for her as those who have no hope for Jesus said on an occasion like this:
"I am the resurrection and the life, he that believeth in me tho he were dead, yet shall he live."
She leaves to mourn her departure nine children: Eli of French Lick; James A. of Montpelier; Elias of Montpelier; Lavica of Shoals; D. T. of Dayton, Ohio; W. B. McDonald of Collins, Ia.; J. L. McDonald, the youngest, of Hartford City; and Emma Garner, the youngest daughter who resided with her mother at home; two brothers, William Harner of Washington, Joseph Harner of Laurenceville, Ill.; one sister Mary Johnson of Evansville; 30 grandchildren and five great grandchildren and a host of friends.

Mattie F. Shields was born near Greenville, Ind. July 14, 1855. Departed to be with Jesus June 19, 1923, at the age of 67 years, 11 months and 5 days.
She was married to Wm. H. McDonald, Dec. 8, 1879. To this union six children were born, according to their ages as follows: John J., Charles Arthur, Mary, Louis, Frank, Clarence. The father and three sons have gone on before.
The nearest relatives remaining are Mrs. Mary Compton, daughter; Frank and Clarence, sons; Mrs. Bedford Stanfield, sister; and Levi and Houston Shields, brothers.
Sister McDonald was converted when only thirteen years of age and joined the Christian church. later however she transferred he membership to the M.E. Church in which she remained until death.
She continued to bear testimony for Jesus unto the end; and exemplified the grace of God by her kindness and patience through much suffering for a number of weeks previous to her departure.
In the language of Holy Writ, we may say of her, "A woman that feareth the Lord, she shall be praised.
Give her the fruit of her hands; and let her own works praise her in thee gates."
Funeral services in the Mt. Lebanon M.E. Church by the Rev. Baughmen of French Lick. The remains were laid to rest in Scarlett Ridge cemetery, "until the break, and the shadows flee away."

Nathan T. Veatch has been suberintendent of the city schools of Atchison since 1901. He is a veteran

CHURCHES:

MT. TABOR

Mt. Tabor Church was one of the original churches which organized the Blue River Association in 1816. Its messengers were Elder Thomas Vandeveer, and Brethren Henry Sanders and Williby Blake, who reported 34 members. Elder William Noblitt joined this church in about 1821. This church hosted the Association for the first time in 1821, at the Cave Spring meeting house, in Orange County.

SURNAMES OF MEMBERS:

LOST RIVER

Lost River Church was one of the churches which organized the Blue River Association, in 1816, her messengers being Uriah Glover, Jonathan Orsburn, and Joseph Crawford, who reported 32 members.

SURNAMES OF MEMBERS:

STAMPER'S CREEK (1818)

Stamper's Creek Church was organized on August 30, 1818, at the home of George Duncan Jr., near the present site of the church. There were eleven charter members, viz., George Duncan Sr., John M. Lewis, Jonathan Stout, John Duncan, Betsy Duncan, Patsy Duncan, Elnora Stout, Anna Johnson, George Duncan Jr., Elizabeth Duncan, and John Johnson. The presbytery was composed of members from Union, Lost River, Sinking Spring, and Lick Creek churches.

Elder Jonathan Jones became the first pastor of the church, and served until his death in December 1853. Services were held at first in the homes of the members; a log meeting house was then built, which was replaced with a frame building in 1836.

Stamper's Creek Church went into the constitution of the Lost River Association in 1825. In 1833 the church took a stand against the Baptist Board of Foreign Missions, and also against the doctrine of Alexander Campbell. In 1837, thirteen members were dismissed to go into the constitution of the French Lick Church.

Later pastors included Elders Charles Sands (1854-1862), Benjamin Keith, William P. Robertson, James Strickland, Samuel McMahan, William Guthrie, Thomas N. Robertson, George T. Mayfield, C. W. In 1852 a hewed log structure replaced the first, and still later a frame house replaced the log one. The present frame meeting house was erected west of the cemetery in 1880, at a cost of $700.

Greenfield Township, Section 26 - T1S R1W

The Providence Cemetery is located in Greenfield Township near the Providence Baptist Church in the community known as Fargo, this being about 12 miles south of Paoli, and 2 miles west off of State Route 37. From the history of Orange County, Goodspeed 1884: "Providence Baptist Church, at Pittsburg, in the southern part of Greenfield Township, is said to have been organized as early as 1819, in what is now Crawford County, at the house of Robert Sands, although there is some doubt as to the date. Prior to 1880, when the present church was built, there had been in their turn a round and a hewed log-house and a frame that served each a period of usefullness and then abandoned." Note: The first two buildings were on the grounds where the cemetery is located. The cemetery and building are now separated by a few hundred yards.

7 August 1819:
The Presbytery, composed of Brothers Isom Gwin and Kinsey Veatch, met at the home of Robert Sands in Crawford County, Indiana. After being constituted, 21 chartered members took their seats and gave themselves the name of Providence. The church appointed Brother Robert Sands to write a letter to the Blue River Association and Brother Samuel McMahan, Brother Robert Yates and Brother Robert Sands to bear the letter and sue for admittance therein. The church agreed to call Brother Isom Gwin as pastor and sent a request to El Bethel to give him a week for that purpose and sent Brother John Lee, Sr., to bear the request.

------------------------------------------------------------------------
2 October 1819:
The Church chose Brother Gwin as moderator and took into consideration the business of choosing deacons. The church agreed to commune three times a year.
------------------------------------------------------------------------
6 April 1820:
The Church chose Brother Robert Sands as Deacon and Brother Walter Alexander as their writing clerk. In August of the same year Brothers John Davis and Cornelius Newkirk were messengers to the Association. In September they agreed to grant Brother John Davis liberty to exercise his gift in the bounds of the Church and in the bounds of the Sister Churches with his laboring brethren.
------------------------------------------------------------------------
August 1827:
Providence Church called on her trustees to make a report on what progress they had made in building a meeting house. They reported that they have the house built to the square by choosing the male members in four classes and they agreed to go on in the same until they have the house covered in. This first building was built of logs and was also used as a school house. Amos Critchfield taught school here in 1830.

A Little Crawford County History...

Crawford County was formed from Harrison County and Perry County in 1818. The act was passed January 29, 1818, to go into effect March 1, 1818. Originally, Crawford County had 4 townships. Over time it was subdivided into our present 9 townships.

The first courthouse for Crawford County was located at Mt. Sterling in a log structure. In 1821 the court moved to a new two story brick building built by Allen Thom at Fredonia. In 1843, the court moved to Leavenworth, and it stayed there until 1896, when it was moved to English.

The first town in Crawford County was Leavenworth in 1818, or some say as early as 1809. Fredonia was started in 1818-1820. Milltown was started by Zeb and Seth Leavenworth when they built a mill on the banks of Blue River about 1826. Gaithers Wood Pile or Nebraska, now called Alton, was started in 1838. Marengo was started in 1838, and Springtown, or old Marengo, had settlers by 1825. English was platted about 1838.

The first settlers in what is now Crawford County were Thomas Stroud, the Spencers, the Peckinpaughs, the Wisemans, and the Haskins, just to name a few.

The forests of Crawford County were the main source of income for many families. Ties, staves, hoop poles and lumber were farmed in great number and sold mainly in the early years at the port at Leavenworth. The forest also provided mast to feed your hogs. People from Orange, Dubois and Martin Counties would have hog drives through Crawford. The hogs would get fat off of the mash and would then be killed, processed and shipped at Leavenworth.

Early manufacturers in Crawford were Pekinpaugh & Harrison at Alton, which made furniture, among other things. R.D. Tucker and David Suddarth were gun makers in Crawford County. Carding mills, tanneries and sawmills began to spring up, and by 1871 over 21 sawmills were working in the timber.

During the period of 1865-1875 Leavenworth was booming because of the building of flatboats. Flatboats were built to haul hay, barrels of lime, pork, apples, cabbage, potatoes, and onions to southern markets.

The railroad opened up the northern part of the county when it was finished in 1882. New towns sprang up, like Taswell, Eckerty, Riceville, and Temple. The railroad was also a boom for older towns like Milltown, Marengo, and English.

Because of soil erosion, farming was on a downward spiral in the 1800's. People started leaving in large numbers after the soil and forest were depleted, and the economics of Crawford waned downward.

Dear All:
I went right to your web site, John, and sure have found it interesting. If my navigation ever goes bad, and I'm completely lost, I hope my position will be in there. It's a great site, made easier for quick connections by your coloring names where pertinent.

Where to start? In 1961 I had my family in northern Indiana and we drove over to Chicago to meet Dad's cousin Henry Veatch, who had a music store there. (It sure did run heavily in the family!) We ended up buying a Gulbranson console from him. This was the brand that Dad/Uncle Chaunce carried in their Hutchinson store and (I think) that GrandDad Veatch (William C.) carried in Girard. I still have it. He shipped it to us in Warsaw, IN, then came by train to visit a few days. Tuned it for us. Real nice get togethers.

A couple of years later, received a copy of his Five Generations of Veatch Genealogy 1828-1957 from my mother who was one of his distributors.  It reflects many of the same names that are in the web site. It appears that Kinsey Veatch and I are kin, though I sure don't know whether thrice removed or thriceteen.

Also, I have on hand a copy of "We Veitches, etc." It belongs to my son who left it here last year. Of Preston Evans Veatch's 5 boys, it was William Clark Veatch who had the wisdom and foresight to sire my dad, Clarence Pitney Veatch, who, in turn, had the audacity to sire me! My granddad died when I was 8, and all I remember of him is our day-long car trips from Hutchinson to Girard to see him and our other kin there. I always got real car sick and remember my siblings' very sympathetic expressions of disgust and suggestions for a cure (Read: why not leave him to live in a house by the side of a road and be a friend to vultures?)

I cured this motion sickness problem by becoming a USAF fighter pilot. Go figure!

Of extra interest to me was Kershaw Co., SC, being the birthplace of Kinsey Veatch since that is the next county to the north of where I live--Sumter Co. I landed here courtesy of my sweet, loving, and lovable wife Bobbie. Somewhere, years ago, I read something to the effect that some of the Veatch clan were from S.C. and some from Kentucky, but I had thought they had immigrated there from Scotland. But the connection to the "sheriffe" seems clear, so they apparently moved south from Maryland.

My understanding about my granddad William Clark V is that he moved his family from (?) Illinois to Girard, KS, date unknown but probably late 19th century. His store was The Veatch Music Company.  He/Flora had 5 boys, as did his parents Preston/Melvina. (I KNOW they had nothing against girls, so other factors must have been involved in those sex outcomes.) My dad, second born (1885) and brother Chauncey, next in rank, moved 200 miles west to Hutchinson and opened Veatch Brothers Music House. This was c 1910. All 5 boys went into the music business: Carl, a nomad; Dad/Chaunce; and Frank/Orville, who stayed in Girard and took over that store.  (The size of Girard certainly makes clear the fact that one store wouldn't support six families!!)

As you can see, THIS BRANCH OF THE VEATCH FAMILY CAN BE SUMMARIZED WITH THE TITLE "BOYS AND MUSIC," acronym for which is BAM.

In 1952, after I finished my tour in Korea, I was assigned to a fighter squadron at Bergstrom AFB, Austin, TX.  One weekend we were visited by my cousin Chauncey, Jr and his family.  They were just home from Germany, and while there took a week or so to research the name in Scotland. Said the Veitch clan was so small they didn't have their own tartan so they wore that of a bigger clan--the McLeods. Since my wife sprang from McLeod lineage, I thought the relationship was grounds for annulment, but she disagreed, and I agreed to agree with her. Also told us the island of Skye was prominent in Veitch lore.

(As you can see, Bobbie is very tolerant to have put up with me. That's in addition to her many other qualities.)

Best wishes,

Charles (Chuck) Veatch

More on Adrian Gwin
(Dad would have hastened to add, "That's NOT 'moron' Adrian Gwin" ;-)

Chuck and Yvonne, Jack forwarded your delightful comments (regarding Dad's stories) to me. Thanks for reading and enjoying Dad's work.

On another note, Chuck, and of particular interest to me is your last name.

Veatch is also the last name of Kinsey Veatch, a neighbor, fellow pastor and elder, very close friend, and brother in Christ of my gggg-grandfather Isham Gwin. Are you by any chance related to this gentleman?

Hi guys!

Just doing a little background on the Veatches in Indiana, and came across a marriage listed on Ancestry.comBenjamin Veatch III, a second cousin to Kinzey Veatch, married Isabella Guyn.  According to the ancestry.com researchers, she is the daughter from Robert Gwin, b. 1744 in Augusta Co., VA, who they claim is the son of Robert Gwin, b. 1702 in Wales, the son of Edward Gwin b. 1665.

Are these Gwins our family?

Subject: Interesting Veatch Family Info

It appears now from my research on the web, that at least some of the Veatches were living in Greene Co., TN, along the Nolichuckey River, basically right next to my 5th great-grandfather John Walker. Kinzey's uncle Elias married Jean or Jane Brown on 18 Feb 1790 "on the Nolichuckey River'. Who knows, John Walker, who lived at the mouth of Meadow Creek on the Nolichuckey and died in 1796 might have attended the wedding?  Several of Elias's children were born there. -- Mike

John,

Indiana is stuffed with Cornwells. When I started looking at them, I thought Cornwell was an unusual name. Not in Indiana, apparently! Anyway, besides Iona and Iola, their were four other Cornwell kids. These four kids show up in the 1900 US Census District 94, French Lick, Orange County, Indiana. By that time Iona and Iola were out of the household.

Mabel J. Cornwell, b. Feb. 1884
Clyde Cornwell b. July 1885
Wayne Licht Cornwell b.27 Feb 1887(data from his draft registration card)
Senta Cornwell b. 1900
In the 1920 US Census District 56, East Chicago Ward 7, Lake Co., IN,
Wayne Cornwell is living with his wife
Ella (Freeman) Cornwell and their kids
Vernel Cornwell
Mabel Cornwell
Marie Cornwell
Arthur Cornwell
This family has been researched and is on Ancestry, but they do not know who Wayne's father is. (It was easy to find him, now that the census is online.) Ellen Freeman's family is well documented online.

Thanks for signing my guestbook! I'm delighted to meet you, Brenda, and I'd like to visit with you more about Brother Kinsey Veatch. I hope you were able to learn some things about him from my pages that you had not seen before today. For example, did you see where his farm was in Crowson's Cove, Sevier Co., TN?

He must've been quite a guy, and would love to have known him. He and my gggg-grandpa, Isham Gwin, were pretty close, not only as neighbors but also as brothers in Christ.

If you have anything you would like me to add to the page, please send it, and I'll be glad to do so (with credit to you, of course). Please let me know.

My wife and I are both teachers living in Las Cruces, NM, and we go right through (or around!) Lincoln whenever we visit our daughter and son-in-law in Chicago as we did this summer.

I'm looking forward to hearing from you again.

Best to you and yours,
In Jesus,

John and Jim,

Doing a little more research.  Just found out my 2nd cousin 2 times removed, Martha Jane Riley, married Chester Arthur Lamon, who is the 2nd-great-grandson of Kinsey Veatch.  Just another Indiana coincidence!
