Ripley Icon Claimed by Freak Accident
Ripley Police have termed the death of a Ripley icon last weekend as a "freak accident".  Mabel Starcher Chapman, 90, was found dead on the driveway of her residence by caretakers at her farm Sunday morning.  According to Sgt. Clyde Kenny of the Ripley Police Department, who investigated the incident, it is speculated that Chapman got out of her Ford Ranger pickup sometime Saturday and left it in gear. She apparently reached back into the vehicle to retrieve mail or to try to put it into park and was knocked down by the open door as the truck rolled backward. She was run over by the front wheel.
Chapman was the great-granddaughter of Jacob Starcher, an early settler who donated 30 acres of land to establish the town of Ripley.  Chapman served as a Deputy Sheriff, was first Executive Secretary of the WV Department of Finance and Administration, Assistant Comptroller of that organization, a social worker with the WV Department of Welfare, and served as director of Social Services at Jackson General Hospital.
She was an animal lover, especially horses, and served as a riding instructor at Coonskin Park Stables, Mountain State Riding School, and on her Willow Haven Farm in Ripley where she bred, raised, trained, and boarded horses.
Chapman made news in 2002 when she offered her farm as a landing site for President Bush and his entourage's helicopters for his visit to the Ripley Fourth of July celebration. Chapman was an active member of her community and was involved in numerous local, state and national organizations.
Funeral services were held Thursday at Waybright Funeral Home in Ripley with interment at Pine Hill Cemetery in Ripley.
Taken from her FindAGrave.com memorial.

[John M. Gwin Note: D. Lytton's source says child born 1 Apr 1906--but that would make Howard only 10 or 11 years old when he became the father--not a likely scenario, it seems to me.]

OBITUARY
EAST LIVERPOOL - Cynthia M. "Cindi" Ludwig, 56, of Kelly Avenue in East Liverpool, passed away on Saturday evening, May 25, 2013.
She was born in East Liverpool on March 19, 1957, a daughter of Marjorie D. "Marge" Revelant Ludwig and the late Robert L. Ludwig, who passed away in 1998.
A 1975 graduate of East Liverpool High School, Cindi worked for ten years as a Materials Technician at Beaver Medical Center before becoming a licensed realtor. She sold real estate locally until recent years, but spent much of her time caring for others. Her giving personality was endearing to all who knew her, and she would give a friend a shirt off her back or cook up a great meal to anyone in need.
Cindi was so proud of her family, including her son, Donald James "Jim" Crumbley and his companion Wendy Ludington, of East Liverpool, and her daughter, Samantha D. Hilditch, also of East Liverpool.   Also surviving is her sister and best friend, Saundra Howard and her husband, Perry, of East Liverpool, and a brother, Robert "Bobby" Ludwig, and his wife, Lori, also of East Liverpool, as well as her nieces, Erica Baker and Allana Baker, and nephews, Devon Ludwig and Nathan Howard.  A friend to all, Cindi remained close with Donald J. Crumbley, Sr., and his son, Aaron Smith, of East Liverpool.
Cindi will be laid to rest at Riverview Cemetery.

I have more information if it would be helpful.

I am Jeannie Carpenter Harvey.  My mother was Clarsie Marie Rhodes, daughter of Lonnie Burton Rhodes (wife Orlie May Cox) son of Alfred Clinton Rhodes, whose wife was Rosa Florence Harper.  I saw where you have my great-grandmother listed as just Rose...it is told that Rosa was not really a Harper. They adopted her. She was found south of Charleston by a couple traveling, who saw smoke and went to it. There they found an indian couple that had been killed. Then they heard a baby crying; they took her with them to Charleston and asked if anyone knew someone who would take her as they were going west. They were told the Harpers would take her. They were mixed with indian and known as the "dark Harpers". The Harpers were from north of Charleston. The dark Harpers did raise her.
