The updating of the numbering system used on this page has been completed. Generation 28 is my own;
27 is that of my parents; 29 is that of my children, etc.  --   John M. Gwin, May 2009

The reformatting of the name font and census data for this page has been completed. --John M. Gwin, Aug 2011

Most of the following information was given to me in 1982 by my father's oldest brother, Uncle James Basset Gwin, Jr., who told me it was compiled by George House Luker  (26.04 below) in 1932 in Little Rock, AR.  Uncle James said he found it in the belongings of his aunt, Mrs. Maggie Vardaman Webb of Alexander City, AL, after she died in 1952, and added it to his own collection.

28.01--Braxton Bragg Nail, b. ca. 1913 in AL; d. unk.; bd. Elmwood Cem., Birmingham, Jefferson Co., AL--Find A Grave Memorial# 115810215; m. Elizabeth Aileen (nee unk.; b. 1916 in AL; d. 1987 in Birmingham, Jefferson Co., AL; bd. Elmwood Cem., Birmingham, Jefferson Co., AL--Find A Grave Memorial# 115809302); at least one ch.

     Braxton Nail, at the time of his death, was second oldest retiree from American Cast Iron Pipe Co. (ACIPCO). Mr. Nail was second generation at ACIPCO, the son of Claude Nail who was on the first Board of Operatives under the Eagan Plan. Mr. Nail retired from ACIPCO in January 1978 with 48 years and 8 months of service. He started work in May 1929 in the company store, known at that time as the Shopping Center. After a brief stay he transferred to the Beggs Plant, a machine shop in North Birmingham operated by ACIPCO at that time. He completed a machinist's apprenticeship in 1933 and within three years returned to ACIPCO's main plant. There he worked the remainder of his service in the machining business. His job titles through the years included machinist, unit foreman over fittings in No. 1 Machine Shop, shift foreman and, from 1972 until 1978, foreman of No. 5 Machine Shop.
     Mr. Nail was born in Goodwater, Ala., in 1913 and moved to the ACIPCO community when his father, the late Claude Nail, found work at the company in 1919. Braxton Nail, Sr., was a graduate of Eagan School and Phillips High School. At the company, he was known for his athletic participation and service. He was an outfielder for the company baseball team for 11 years and also played basketball, volleyball and indoor baseball. Within the community he coached a boys' ACIPCO YMCA state championship basketball team and a girls' basketball team, an outreach of the YWCA.
