Ancestors, Descendants, and Other Relatives of

          Neva Jean
"Jean" Keeney Hatfield

SOURCES:
1.  My first source came this week (10 Jun 2022) when I got my weekly email from Ancestry.com DNA saying that a fellow Ancestry member was a DNA-proven relative of mine, this one at the 2nd or 3rd cousin level.  Her name is "Neva Hatfield", they said, and I should contact her and encourage her to build a family tree so we could see how she and I are related.  So I emailed her, expecting to hear the usual nothing.  But VOILA!  The next day I got a newsy response from Cousin Jean Hatfield (she goes by her middle name, Jean), and her maiden name was Keeney, the same as my mother's!  Long story short, however, our correspondence turned up no connection, nor has any further research on her or my part so far.   So I built this page as a clearinghouse for information we were gathering. (The generation numbers I'm using below are all but sure to be incorrect; I'll fix those when we finally make the connection to my line.)

2.  Ancestry.com has been a helpful resource.
3.  Facebook.com has also proven to be of assistance.
4.  FindAGrave.com has produced much data.
5.  But Mom's first cousin Roscoe Keeney's book, long the authority on Keeney relationships in West Virginia (if not the entire country), was silent on every one of Jean's known kin.

GENERATIONAL CONNECTIONS:
1.  Some years ago I was getting more and more confused as I would try to see how I was related to people in my various lines. Finally I decided that I would re-number the generations, with me being the same number in each line.  I arbitrarily selected generation 28 to be my own in every line, with my parents being generation 27, my children being gen. 29, and so on.  And that has worked just fine until this page.

2.  Ancestry.com DNA tells me that Jean and I are cousins at the second- or third-cousin level

[John M. Gwin Note--15 Jan 2022:  We know from the 1900 census that 28.00--William Keeney was born in Jan. 1842.  I assume that he served in the Civil War, and so I estimate he was first married just after the war at approx. age 23. I believe this first wife is Mary Ann Cunningham of Pennsylvania.  If he and Mary Ann had children about every 2-3 years until she died for unknown reasons, he would've then married Samantha soon after Mary's death because he would've needed help raising the children.  We know he married Samantha about 13 years before 1900 or about 1887, and since son 29.09--John Keeney was born in March of 1888, that would make him the first of Samantha's eight kids.]

[John M. Gwin Note--20 Jun 2022:  The above paragraph (highlighted in green) is proof that my cousin Roscoe C. Keeney, Jr. was aware of Jean's line.  His monthly publication, Keeney Update, was started for this very reason: to include family members who had not been discovered before his book, 2597 Keeney Relatives, was published.  His Keeney Update Volume 23, Number 2, of September 2001 could have the connections in it for which Jean and I have been looking. The above paragraph says it is online, and indeed it is.  I found it there, but it only included the above obituary.  No additional information was found there.  So now I'm going back to the census records to see if I can find more of William's, Mary's, and Samantha's census and/or other records in the mid-to-early 1800's.]

Some Good Communication

Hello Cousin Neva.
I got my weekly notice yesterday from
Ancestry.com DNA.  In each of those notices, they send me the name of a person they have determined by DNA is a blood relative of mine. Yesterday, that person was you!
They said you and I are somewhere in the second cousin to third cousin level of DNA blood relationship. In the photo of you they sent, you appear to be much younger than I am, so I'm guessing that you and I are probably second cousins once removed.
I'm 74, and my wife Sharon is 70. We were both born, raised, and married in southern West Virginia, so you and I are probably related through folks in that area of the country. My mother was a Keeney from the Kanawha County line of Keeneys. She had gone to New Orleans, LA the summer of 1942 to take an education class at Tulane University, and she stayed at my grandmother's boarding house. She met the man who would become my father, fell in love, and married him that August. When she returned to WV a few days later, he went with her, and they lived in WV the rest of their lives.
So do you have any Keeneys in your own history? I love meeting new family members, so--if you'd like--I'd enjoy corresponding with you! Sharon and I are both retired school teachers and have lived in Las Cruces, NM all 45 years of our married lives. We have three kids and eight grandkids.
My email address is jmcdgwin@zianet.com, or you can reply right here on Ancestry's page.   Thanks for being an Ancestry member.
:-)

Hi Cousin John,
Thanks for the email on ancestry! I’m always happy to meet new family members as well :)
My dad was a Keeney. His dad’s name was Charles Keeney.  I honestly don’t know who his siblings were but I do have an aunt who may know.  I wonder if it’s possible that your mother and my grandfather could have been brother and sister?  What was your mother’s name?  I say this because my dad would have been close to your age if he was still living.
We were raised in southern Ohio.  Not too awfully far from West Virginia.   :)  At least not too far from Huntington anyway :)
I am 52 and will be 53 in September.  Was married to the love of my life for 34 years before God called him home.  He’s been gone a little over 2 years, and I miss him every single day!  We had 3 children together. We lost our middle one at the age of 3 months to SIDS.  And we’ve got quite a number of grandchildren :)
I don’t know if you have Facebook or not, but if so, you can find me on there under Jean Keeney Hatfield.  My middle name is Jean, and that’s what I like to go by :)
Hope to hear back from you soon :)

Cousin Jean
