Sarah Joy Gwin, our
second daughter, said yes to Jason Deane Johnson, and they committed
their lives to each other at First Assembly of God, Las
Cruces, NM, 30 December 2002. God's given them Jason Deane "J. D."
Johnson, Jr.
(2003)--our first grandbaby--followed by Ryan Jonathan Johnson (2004), Tate Austin Johnson(2006), andZachary Jacob Johnson (2008).
Jason is the head of radar support at White Sands
Missile Range, NM; Sarah taught for years at
Noah's Ark Learning Center, a ministry of First
Assembly of God of LC, and served as their
director of curriculum; now she's working in the
Las Cruces Public Schools as a DDPre teacher.

[John
M. Gwin Note: While looking for Green
and Sarah Jane and their children in later censuses (i.e.,
after 1850), I found two men, ages 11 years apart
(just as they were in Sabine Parish, LA, in 1850) and living next door
to each other near Gonzalez P. O. in Gonzales Co., TX:
(1) a William F. Reeves, 30, and his wife M.
J., 23, with four children: M. J., 7, George G., 5,
Eliza, 2 or 3, and Franklin, 1, and
(2) a George
Reeves,
19, and his wife Lycana (19).
Whether these are indeed the sons of
Green and Sarah Jane is uncertain at this point, but
they certainly match at several points, each of which
increases the possiblility of accuracy. If
anyone is able to determine where the Reeves went from
their Sep 1850 location in Sabine Parish, LA, please
let me know at jmcdgwin@zianet.com.

Ora Modgling, OBITUARY
JUNCTION, TX - Ora Nell Modgling, 65, died Wednesday, April 9, 1997, in a local hospital. Service will be at 2 p.m. Saturday in Graham Funeral Home Chapel with
burial in Junction Cemetery. She was born May 25, 1931, in San Marcos and had been a resident of Junction since 1957. She was a homemaker and a Methodist.
Survivors include three sons, James D. Modgling Jr. of Carlsbad, N.M.,
Lee Modgling of Artesia, N.M., and Gary Modgling of Bedford; a
daughter, Joyce Casparis of Sonora; and five grandchildren.
I am looking for any information on
descendents of Thomas J Modgling. I am the
son of Earl
Frank Marglon and Lucille Elizabeth
Rawlins. Earl F. Marglon is the son of Claudius (Claud)
Modgling, born May 5, 1884, to Thomas J. Modgling
and Jennie Belle
Bolt Modgling. Claud and his sister Cynthia Elizabeth
Modgling were orphand after their mother
died in Fort Duchesne, Uintah County, Utah.
The name Marglon was a spelling mistake by my
grandfather, Claud, who could not remember the
correct spelling of his surname of Modgling.
I am the
daughter of Franklin
Allen Marglon; he was born in Utah.
I am not sure where he is, and I haven't seen him
for about 10 years; last I heard, he was living in
the San Pablo or Richmond area in
California. His mother's name is Viola, and he
has a brother named Bert, a sister named Betty, and I
think another brother named Jack. I
was about 10 when I last saw my father and have
been online a lot trying to find other Marglons
who might know anything. People used to
always misspell Marglon on letters to us, too; it
was always misspelled to Modgling, but my mother
told me that that was the original spelling long
ago. But please let me know if you have any
information on Frank or how you and I are related.
Thank you very much; it is very exciting to
finally make contact with another Marglon after
all this time. Thank you.
Tina,
Yes,
you
and
I are related. Your grandfather Lawerance (Larry)
Marglon is my father's brother and my
uncle. I am in contact with Betty, your aunt.
Though I have not seen her in years, as she
lives in the San Francisco Bay area and I live
in Texas, I am in contact with her by e-mail. If
you will forward your e-mail address to me at
Bmarglon@cs.com, I will forward it to Betty, and
she can contact you directly and bring you up to
date on the family.
Would that be Thomas J. Modgling (May 24,
1861 - 1887)? If so, then I may be able to
assist you, a little. This Thomas J. Modgling
was the son of Ann Permalia Johnson and Elijah
M. Modgling. Chris Johnson

[Sharron's
Note: Dad's
mom was Willie Gordon and was married to Roy
Johnson... They had 4 sons that lived to
adulthood, Robert, Harold, Malry and Clinton. I
don't recall William and Samuel although they
could have been some of the kids that died
younger. The only daughter that I have ever heard
mentioned was Chloe who died in a house fire when
she was only a young girl... 11 or 12, I
think. Grandma Johnson died when dad was
only about 9 or 10, so that would have been just
about 1930??
By 1920 they were living in Caballo, New
Mexico, because Dad was born there, and he was born
in 1920. Dad and Gerry are gone for the summer, and
getting him to sit down and discuss his family is
like pulling his teeth. *laughs* He keeps
telling me to stop finding more of his
relatives. *shrugs* Perhaps we could all
corral him when he gets home and bombard him with
questions. I'll also mention to Gerry that
maybe she could get Dad to tell her his tree and she
could write it down for us... she would do that, and
Dad would be more apt to talk to her, I think....
I do know that Roy had a twin brother,
Ray. And Ray was married to Willie's sister,
but I can't remember her name right off the top of
my head. Dad's grandma Gordon pretty much
raised him and the other boys.. Robert was married,
I think, when his mom died, but Harold, Dad and
Clinton were still young and at home. Robert
died in 1970 in Flagstaff, Arizona, and is buried in
Winslow. He had 2 daughters, Mary and Betty. I
think Mary lives in Deming and I think her last name
is Raley... Malene would know that because she used
to work with Malene. Betty died several years
ago. If you could find Mary you would have a
plethora of information, I think..]

Hi John,
I stumbled across your site tonight
while trying to find more information about my gg-grandmother Eliza
Evelyn Stone, who was married to John
W. Johnson, son of Francis J Frank
Johnson. I am Lonnie
Johnson's granddaughter. In 1997
my stepfather put together as much he could for me
about my Johnson heritage. My stepfather
passed away in 2005, and he was the genealogy expert
in the family. I know nothing about doing this, but
it's time to learn. So I'm just starting out and
trying to piece together what he left me and find
more information. I am so glad to have found
your site so quickly. Sadly, my father, R. W.
Johnson, did not keep in contact with his family,
and I would love to spread my wings and meet some of
the family I have out there. I had no idea we are
such a big clan!
I am writing to thank you for your site and for
getting me a bit closer to learning about who I am.
I have pedigree charts with lists of names and dates
and anecdotes, but no pictures. It was awesome to
see them on your page.
Thank you so much for taking the time to put this
information on the internet.
Sincerely,
Dena Johnson Gast

Hello Malry,
My name is Leanna Burgess Veazey, and my
great-grandfather was Fred Washington Johnson, brother to
your Roy Clinton Johnson. I tried to contact you
through Ancestry
but wasn't successful. If you are still working on
your Johnson family heritage, I would love to share
info with you. The children (and many descendents) of
Frank and Betsy (Townsend) Johnson have been well
documented, and there are a few of us who are still
researching the continuing generations.
Would love to hear from you,
Leanna
Hello,
Leanna! Thanks for sending all the good family
information. I put that email at
the bottom of the page and am
listing (in the outline above in this
gold color)
everything you sent. John
Hello John, To answer your
question concerning the tombstones of Lucy and Minnie
Johnson; Lucy E. Johnson is
indeed the first child born to Lite Stapleton Johnson
and Wincie Henley Miller Modgling Johnson. Lucy died at the age
of 9, death date should be 1913 not 1918. I am sure the
tombstone was hard to read and the 3 was deciphered as
an 8. She died of
complications due to diabetes.
Minnie Henley Johnson
is actually Annie Henley Johnson and is the daughter
of
Wincie
Henley Miller and Isaac Newton Modgling
Lite Stapleton Johnson and
Nancy Texana "Nan" Reeves
Rosie
Ruby Modgling
and
Walter Stapleton
Johnson.
Annie
Henley Johnson
Annie
Henley Johnson
Rosie is the daughter
of Wincie Henley Miller and Isaac Newton Modgling
(Wincie's first marriage).
Walter Stapleton is the son of Lite Stapleton Johnson
and Nancy Texana "Nan" Reeves (Lite's first
marriage).
So Walter and Annie were step-siblings.
Hope this helps.

Hello--like to start by saying my name is Danny Johnson,
my dad is Paul Johnson Jr.,
his father is Paul J., and Lite was my
great-granddad. My dad had little info on his
family. My granddad
Paul was about all he knew. He did meet Lite and spoke to him
a little and knew that
he was buried Fiskville Cemetery in Austin, Texas. And that's
how I started my family
search on the Johnsons. It's been more history than I ever
expected, so if you
have any info. to share on Lite, it'd be appreciated. God
bless.

which one of these--indeed, if either--is the John

We are discovering John and Liza to be
the "furthest back persons" we have for sure--to
date--in this line so far; they are two of the
ggg-grandparents of Malry Jr.'s and my
grandsons! Thanks to Janice Stensrude for
the tip on where to look! :-)
And now, Dec 2009, we know that this 25.08--John
Washington (not William) Johnson is a grandson
of our most recent"furthest back person", James
Johnson of colonial Virginia!

Stensrude states on her page (see
bottom of this page) that Roy
appears here with "2 brothers & 3 half

is not the father of the oldest of the three
children--William, Ceilly, and John--and (2)
that the census taker erred in not calling these
children step-siblings.

This certainly looks like it could be

was told "Johnny" ("Johnny"--not "John E.--is
the middle name of Malry, Sr. and Malry, Jr., so
it is not illogical that it could've come from
this grandpa to Malry, Sr., and that John told
the census taker "Johnny" who

Roy reports that he is married (as
opposed to widowed or divorced), yet she is not
in this picture. But Sharron wrote to say she
died when her dad--Malry Sr., was only about
9-10, so that's ca. 1930. We're thinking she had
only died very recently when this census was
taken.
As you can see, Roy--residence #19--was living
right between two of his brothers-in-law and one
house away from his parents-in-law. This census
showed that he was paying them only $3.00 a
month rent for living on the Gordon family
ranch--a real gift in just about ANY economy!

Hi John,
Dad's mom was Willie Gordon and was married to Roy Johnson...
They had 4 sons that lived to adulthood, Robert, Harold, Malry
and Clinton. I don't recall William and Samuel although they
could have been some of the kids that died younger. The only
daughter that I have ever heard mentioned was Chloe who died in
a house fire when she was only a young girl... 11 or 12, I
think. Grandma Johnson died when dad was only about 9
or10, so that would have been just about 1930??
By 1920 they were living in Caballo, New Mexico, because Dad was
born there, and he was born in 1920.
Dad and Gerry are gone for the summer, and getting him to sit
down and discuss his family is like pulling his teeth.
*laughs* He keeps telling me to stop finding more of his
relatives. *shrugs* Perhaps we could all corral him
when he gets home and bombard him with questions. I'll
also mention to Gerry that maybe she could get Dad to tell her
his tree and she could write it down for us... she would do
that, and Dad would be more apt to talk to her, I think....
I do know that Roy had a twin brother, Ray. And Ray was
married to Willie's sister, but I can't remember her name right
off the top of my head. Dad's grandma Gordon pretty much
raised him and the other boys.. Robert was married, I think,
when his mom died, but Harold, Dad and Clinton were still young
and at home. Robert died in 1970 in Flagstaff, Arizona,
and is buried in Winslow. He had 2 daughters, Mary and
Betty. I think Mary lives in Deming and I think her last
name is Raley... Malene would know that because she used to work
with Malene. Betty died several years ago. If you
could find Mary you would have a plethora of information, I
think..
In God's Love,
Sharron

Hey, John...yes, Roy was Grandpa Johnson's name...In the 1920's
this Johnson clan was living in the Caballo, N.M. area...
Grandpa and Grandma had moved from Texas recently before...
somewhere in the Commanche River area, I think...My dad was born
in Sept. of 1920 (Robert, Samuel, Harrold and a sister, I
believe, were older) and his mother died when he was about seven
years old... soon after that, my Grandpa and Robert, maybe,
Harrold, Malry and William Clinton along with one of Grandpa's
brothers, moved to Alamogordo by driving all their cattle across
the Jornada to Organ Pass and on over to Alamogordo... Robert
might have already been out cowboying on his own by then...I
know he said he was on a round-up when one night his Mother's
horse ran through camp while all were asleep, and he knew he
needed to get home... his mother was dying; Samuel might have
been a brother who died very young, and there was a sister a
little older than my dad who died when my dad was only about
three or four; she got her dress on fire while their mother was
making soap in a kettle outside on a wood fire and she died as a
result of severe burns... Robert married Aunt Nettie and Harrold
married Aunt Dorothy... Malry married Clora Cordellia McGinn and
William Clinton married Emma. Grandpa Roy donated the land for
the Caballo Cemetery to the township of Caballo, so there
might be some info to be gleaned from that...

O.K., here's the scoop...Grandpa Johnson was Roy Johnson,
Grandma was Willie (Gordon) Johnson whose father was John Gordon
and mother was Mallie Backus... the brother to Grandpa I
mentioned earlier was a twin to Grandpa and his name was Ray
Johnson; he apparently never married... so far this is all I
have been able to dig up... I'm sure Dad would talk with you...
they should be back from their annual summer pilgrimage to the
"cooler" country about Sept. Let us hear what
you find... Malry and Millie

Total records = 51.
The little town of Caballo (it means "horse" in
Spanish--pronounced KAH BAH YO)
is located approximately 15 miles south of Truth or
Consequences, NM, on Hwy 187.
This is still an active cemetery, but with no sexton or
phone. It is a typical "western" cemetery with rocky soil,
wooden crosses, and circles of stones. If you stop by the
Caballo Store, they can give directions to the cemetery. [John M. Gwin Note: As highlighted
in red in the e.mail above from Malry Johnson, Jr., he states
that the land for this cemetery was donated to the Town of
Caballo his own grandfather, Roy Johnson.]
All visible graves have been listed, but as with
all old cemeteries, there are those unmarked graves. In 1938 the
Caballo Dam was built, and water began to cover the homes of the
early settlers. They moved their homes to the foothills on the
west side of the Rio Grande.
These records show all visible burial sites in the
Caballo Cemetery, which were compiled on 18 Nov 1994 by the
Sierra County Genealogical Society, then published in a book. I
have transcribed from this book, after being given permission by
the society, so it could be published on the internet.

Hiya John, I looked over your page again

Now you know where Malry got his name from; he was named after
his maternal grandmother.
John K. Backues and Eliza Stone had three children: [JMG Note: The fact that his middle name is

Hope this helps fill in some blanks. If you want more on
the Stone family let me know. I also have more on the Backues
family if you want.
Also I have seen Roy's death year given as 1948, but I haven't
ever been able to find a death record for him. My mother thought
she remembered visiting Roy in the summer before her sophomore
year in high school which would have been abt 1957, she thought
he died shortly after that, but now I think she may have been
mistaken and she could be talking about Claude Robert, since he
died in 1966. Does the family have any knowledge as to
Roy's death date.
Let me know what else I can help you with,
Leanna

Subject: Just thought I'd let you know
Hello everyone,
I know its been awhile since you received a mass e-mail from
me. So I thought I would let you know that we have changed our
Internet service to Hughes Net.
Since we have changed over, I'm not sure if there will be a
newer version of the Johnson Chronicle. I have not
received any articles or updates from people contributing to
the newsletter, so for now, it's been put on hold.
Thank you and Happy New Year!

Hi John,
I stumbled across your site
tonight while trying to find more information about my
gg-grandmother Eliza Evelyn Stone, who was married to John W.
Johnson, son of Francis J Frank Johnson.
I am Lonnie Johnson's granddaughter. In 1997 my stepfather put
together as much he could for me about my Johnson heritage.
My stepfather passed away in 2005, and he was the genealogy
expert in the family. I know nothing about doing this, but
it's time to learn.
So I'm just starting out and trying to piece together what he
left me and find more information.
I am so glad to have found your site so quickly.
Sadly, my father, R. W. Johnson, did not keep in contact with
his family, and I would love to spread my wings and meet some
of the family I have out there. I had no idea we are such a
big clan!
I am writing to thank you for your site and for getting me a
bit closer to learning about who I am.
I have pedigree charts with lists of names and dates and
anecdotes, but no pictures. It was awesome to see them on your
page.
Thank you so much for taking the time to put this information
on the internet.
