Sources:

1. Our first and only source to start was the 1880 U.S. Census of Precinct 8, Collin Co., TX (see below). We are looking for the children and other descendants of William Gwin (oldest son of Isham and Mary Canterbury Gwin) and his wife Susanah Beard. We believe we have found this William in the 1830 U.S. Census of Dallas Co., AL, and assuming that the ages for that census are correct, then William's and Susanah's second son in 1830 was born between 1825 and 1830 in Alabama. Matching this description perfectly in 1880 is this Carles Gwin, whose data from 1880 we have used to start this page as a likely candidate to be William and Susanah's son.

2. In September 2007 we found this family first in the 1870 Census of Grayson Co., TX (see below), then in the 1860 Census of Angelina Co., TX, and finally in the 1850 Census of Choctaw Co., AL, adding several more family members.

3. Then on 14 Sep 2007 we found three other Gwin families in the 1850 census of Choctaw Co., AL, living just minutes from this Charles, the ages of the husbands of each matching perfectly with the ages of the sons in William's and Susanna's family in the 1930 census!

 Having found this family first in 1880 and working our way backward through the censuses, we found them again in 1870 and now in 1860. That Charles is a wheelwright is VERY encouraging, as John Gwin (my own ggg-grandpa and the brother of the William who is believed to be the father of this Charles) was also a wheelwright! If Charles is indeed the son of William (and thus the nephew of John), having been born in Alabama, he could well have apprenticed under his uncle John!

Hi John,
Regarding your information on Charles Gwin (Guinn), he is my great-grandfather.  His wife was Elizabeth Husband and his daughter (Sarah Minerva Guinn) was my grandmother.  In our family records we have the surname spelled Guinn.  From family recollections we know that he was a farmer and he also did beautiful cabinetry/woodwork.  Also we have a picture of Charles and Elizabeth; unfortunately, we haven't yet converted it to a digital format.
We appreciate the background information you have compiled.

Our Charles Guinn is half French and half Cherokee Indian.  He was married to Elizabeth Husband(s) and lived in Angelina County in East Texas.  We have some records showing a middle initial of "M" and some showing a middle initial of "F".  At this time, we believe the "F" to be correct.  We believe Charles M to be the son of Charles F and Elizabeth.  We have census information showing their children as Mary Jane, Ann, Elijah, James, Martha, Charles M., George, and Sarah M (my grandmother).

Thanks for sending this! IF your Charles Guinn and my Charles Gwin are the same person, and IF I have understood the material you sent me, then your "Gwin" line looks something like this:

1.00--Richard Gwin m. Sarah Chesley
2.00--Isham Gwin m. Mary Canterbury
3.03--William Gwin m. Susanna Beard
4.00--Charles Gwin m. Elizabeth Husband
5.00--Sarah Minerva Gwin m. Jessie's grandfather (Here's a very interesting note: Sarah Minerva's [possible] grandfather, William Gwin, had several sisters, the youngest two of whom were named Sarah--the older--and Minerva--the baby.)
6.00--Jessie's parents
7.00--Jessie Pearce

HOWEVER, IF you are certain that your Charles was half French and half Cherokee, then I don't see how thay can be the same person, as I am VERY confident that my data on William and up are right. In that case, if this is your Charles, he can't be mine. Does that make sense?
