This
is
clearly our Charles Gwin, who, we hope, will turn
out to be a son of
William and Susanna Gwin, Isham's and Mary's oldest
son. Living two
doors away (fam. 171) is who I imagine to be his
younger brother,
James, while 8 doors away (fam. 165) is who
I
imagine to be their older brother, Francis (see next two census
transcriptions). |

Suppose
this
son were already married and out of the house in
1830; he
would then be the eldest son but NOT PRESENT on the
1830 census of
William's and Susanna's home! These are the only four Gwin families in the entire county of Choctaw in 1850. There are also two Beard families: #595 and 598. |

wheelwright |
400/400 |
AL |
Having
found
this family first in 1880 and working our way backward
through
the censuses, we found them again in 1870 and now in 1860.
That Charles
is a wheelwright is VERY encouraging, as John Gwin (my own
ggg-grandpa
and the brother of the William who is believed to be the
father of this
Charles) was also a wheelwright! If Charles is indeed the
son of
William (and thus the nephew of John), having been born in
Alabama, he
could well have apprenticed under his uncle John! |

[1848] | AL | Good!
The
discovery of this daughter adds new information, as she
did not
appear in the family in 1870. She could have died by 1870,
but I
believe it to be more likely that she had married by then
and was
living elsewhere. |

[1850] | AL | Oh
my.
This is Elijah H. Gwin,
who,
I can imagine, was likely not in the room when the census
taker--probably somewhat hard of hearing--mistook Charles'
and Lizzie's
pronunciation of "Elijah" for "Eliza". |
