J. M. K. Guinn was the sole proprietor of the Randolph Enterprise; in October 1872, he sold his interest in 1895 and moved to Langdale, AL. In the 24 October 1895 issue of the Randolph Toiler, "Capt. J. M. K. Guinn and family took their departure on Tuesday last for Langdale, AL, where they will make their future home. Captain Guinn is a native of this county and ranks among its oldest and most useful citizens. An empty sleeve attests his duty to his State and section in war, as his action and counsel in the people's cause has proven his devotion in time of peace. He and his sons were the founders, and until recently the editors and publishers, of the Toiler, and the present editor, joining their many friends, sincerely regrets the removal of the family from Wedowee, where they will be greatly missed. May prosperity and happiness attend them."
JAMES MILES KILLIAN GUINN, author of the History of Randolph County, published in the Randolph Toiler, Wedowee, Alabama, in 1896, the third son of James W. and Catherine Ann (Dobson) Guinn, was born November 5, 1835, at Franklin, Macon County, North Carolina, and died at Langdale, Alabama, June 8, 1903, and is buried at Wedowee, Alabama.
He married first Emily Frances Burton (who accompanied her husband to many of the Virginia battlefields), at Wedowee, Alabama.,Feb 27, 1862, and 3 children were born of that union, Robert, Katy and Emily.
His wife Emily died in childbirth along with his daughter (also named Emily) on November 6, 1865, at Alto, Texas. The next year he returned to Alabama and on February 21, 1869, married at Wedowee, Mary Jane (widow of Jimmy Foster) Culbertson, daughter of Bird Culbertson and Mary Ann Garrett. This 2nd wife died August 1, 1907.
James was a farmer, owned and edited the Enterprise Publisher, Wedowee, from 1873 until 1875. He was County Superintendent of Education between 1873 and 1888 and was U. S. Storekeeper and Gauger under Cleveland's first administration. J. M. K. Guinn and Mary Jane had 9 children all born in Randolph County; they are:

Mary Walter Gordon Guinn Stanley 1879 - 1978
When she was living, Mrs. Mary Walter Gordon Guinn Stanley enjoyed reminiscing about her Confederate veteran father and them any changes she had seen take place in East Alabama. The daughter of Captain James Miles Killian Guinn, and his second wife, Mary Jane Culbertson, Mary Walter Gordon Guinn Stanley, which was her full name, had always gone by the name Gordon.
She was born July 26, 1879 in Roanoke, Alabama where her father was county superintendent of education. Mrs. Stanley was a small child when the family lived in Roanoke, but she had vivid memories of growing up in Wedowee and as a bride and mother in Langdale and Lanett.
At 21, Gordon Guinn married Alonzo Nolan Stanley in LaGrange, Georgia, at the home of her half-brother, Robert Guinn. At the time of her marriage, her father-in-law, Isham Stanley, was the master mechanic at Langdale Mill, and Nolan worked for his father. Isham Stanley moved to Langdale after the original mill built in 1866 burned, and he drew the plans for the new mill, part of which stands today.
In 1900 when the Stanleys were married, "Langdale was a nice place to live." There were only dirt roads; water was drawn from wells and there were no street lights. The young couple had a vegetable garden and chickens but bought milk from a neighbor who had a cow. Mrs. Stanley cooked on a wood-burning stove, and the house was heated with wood in big fireplaces. The Stanleys did not have a car or a horse and buggy, but this was no loss, as they could travel all the way from West Point, Ga., to Bleecker on the Chattahoochee Valley Railroad. Mrs. Stanley remembered Thomas Lang, for whom Langdale is named, as well as his brother, Ed Lang.
Of the four children born to the Stanleys, only the eldest is living. Mary Dickson lives in Arlington, Massachusetts. Alton G. Robinson of Newnan, Georgia, and Louise Brown of Lanett, Alabama, are deceased, along with their infant brother, Alonzo Nolan, Jr.
As a child, she remembered going to the grist mill with her father and cottage prayer meetings with the only light provided by kerosene lamps and open fires. But most of all, she remembered the loving family of mother, father, brothers and sisters and the fact that "just about everybody was kin to each other." She had lived through good times and hard ones, wars and peace, and had seen the advent of many life styles taken for granted today. She agreed not all the changes were for the better, but she enjoyed life as it came.

envied but followed.
