Outline of the Known Family

[John M. Gwin Note:  Birth control being what it was is the early to mid 1800's, we estimate that Thomas and Jane had at least five more children than the six listed in the 1850 census, based on an average of one child every two years.  We have therefore listed those five in the outline at approximately two-year intervals in this color.  And now, later the same day, we find son Alfred Gwin appearing as predicted in the birth order as 25.03.]

The facts that Peter is living three houses from John C. and that both they and their parents have the same places of birth strongly suggests to me that they are brothers.  Indeed, the 1850 census below may confirm this to be true.

From the 18 Jul 1850 census of Hamburg, Erie Co., NY

This image is of a portion of page 14 (of 125) of the federal census of Hamburg, Erie Co., NY taken 18 Jul 1850.  It says that living on that day in residence #103 was family #103, all of whom are from New York, the head of which family was Thomas Guinn (Ancestry.com mistranscribes this as "Gaines"), age 61, a farmer whose estate's value is some $1600.  His wife Jane Guinn, age 46, is also here, along with six children--five sons and one daughter: Melvin Guinn, 25; Peter Guinn, 17; Ellin C. Guinn, 15; John Guinn, 12; Charles Guinn, 7; and Wallace P. Guinn, 3.

In my analysis, this could easily be our John C. Gwin and the Peter G. Gwin who appear in the 1880 census summary chart just above.

John - What a pleasant surprise. Thank you for the page. I have found a John Gwin from Ithaca, NY, who enlisted in the 11th Wisconsin Volunteer Regiment of Infantry on 9/12/1861, made corporal, then sergeant, and was wounded at Blakely, Alabama, just after the taking of the Spanish Fort outside of Mobile, Alabama, toward the end of the war.  He was mustered out 9/14/1865 at Mobile.  This might be the John Gwin I was looking for.  Another issue.  Are your Gwins related to the Captain Gwin of the Tyler gunboat that kept the rebs up all night at Shiloh and later died on the gunboat by having his arm shot off by a reb cannon shot?  I know that most of you are south of the MD line.  I hope you can put up with a few Yankees in the clan.  Gwin

P. S. -- John, Ester Gwin was my grandmother.  Gwin

Gwin,
Thanks for writing--great to meet you!
Sounds to me like you may just be getting started with this research.
I'd not heard of your John C. Gwin until you wrote, but I went ahead and built a page for him at http://www.gwingenealogy.net/GENEALOGY/SURNAMES/Gwin/GwinJohnCAncestorsDescendants.htm.
This way, folks who are, like you, searching for more data on him or any of his family, can find this page and contact you or me and share what they know.
What do you think?  Please take a look at it and let me know.
Please know that this is partly your page, now, as well, so please feel free to send me any additions or revisions that you wish--or even request deletions!
My best to you,
In Jesus,
John

My great-grandfather, my father's grandfather on his mother's side, was John C. Gwin who in the 1880 census was born in New York in 1840 and was postmaster in Loyal Wisconsin in 1880 with two daughters. Any information on this side of the Gwin family would be appreciated.  Gwin R. Whitney

16 Nov 2013:   I have obtained a copy of "The 11th Wisconsin in the Civil War", a Regimental History by Christopher C. Wehner, published by McFarland & Company, Inc.

Our namesake, John Gwin, was a member of Company D--The "Richland County plowboys".  He was from Ithaca, NY; enlisted September 12, 1861, promoted to corporal then sgt; wounded in Blakely, Alabama; mustered out September 4, 1864.

Have not found anything about action around Blakely, but am searching. I feel this John Gwin is the same as John C. Gwin, postmaster.

I will keep in touch.
Warm regards,
Gwin R. Whitney
