Some Good Communication

22 Aug 2022

Hi.
I have visited your Gwin site several times while trying to figure out my Gwin Line.

I've included a link to my wiki tree for quick reference:
Wikitree page.  My Gwin line is in Philadelphia and New Jersey, and the last ancestor I can trace accurately is Hanse Gwin (1839-1904) m. Sarah Simmons (1842-1924).
Hanse is thought to be the son of William Gwin (est. 1811-1868) and Ruth Ann (unknown).  Other than a census I find nothing to prove this relationship.  I wanted to see if by chance you had any information on the Philadelphia Gwin family.
Hanse Gwin's sister, Margret Gwin Hamilton Magee, was married to Hanse Hamilton (b. 1807-1866).
Please let me know if you have or know anything about this family.  Thank you for your time.
Sincerely,
Kimberly Aungst

Kim,

Your Wikitree page is very useful—I’m glad you built it!  :-)

I've gotten no further than you have, however.  The only hesitation I have, though, about going ahead and listing Hanse’s parents as William and Ruth Ann on your tree is that his obituary, a photo of the newspaper clipping of which you post on your Wiki page, states that his name is Hanse JUNIOR.  But he is actually Hanse SENIOR.  If you think that is merely a typo on the part of the newspaper, then I would say go ahead with confidence and list William and Ruth Ann as his parents.

I checked one other source for them without success:  Jesse Blaine Gwin’s 1961 book History of the Gwin Family (Gwin, Gwin, Gwin, Gwynn, Gwynne, Guin, Guinn, Wynn, Wynne).  It’s a great collection but far, far from complete.  For example, a VERY brief reference to my own family appears there, but yours does not seem to.

Nevertheless, I believe there MUST be a source for your Hanse’s (and William’s and Ruth Ann’s) family SOMEWHERE, and I encourage you to keep looking for it!

I have built one of my gwingenealogy.net pages for your line.  Ii covers most of what you have on your Wikitree page.  In my opinion, it’s worth it to have as many accessible references to one's line as possible, so posting it could be a valuable step. In it I have assigned you generation 29 in my own outline format, since you are the same age as my children, making your dad's generation 28. your grandpa's 27, your children's 30, etc.  Hanse is gen. 24.

Best to you and yours,

In Jesus,

John

I was looking through “Gwin” newspaper clippings and came across this…I have never seen or heard of a Charles associated with Andrew Gwin. I do know this is the Andrew Gwin believed to be the father of William Gwinn because of the address 26 Pine Alley in Southwark this address is listed in directories, in Andrew’s obit.  I tried doing a reverse search to see what I could discover, but haven’t found anything yet.  Just figured I’d show you and see what you thought.
Thanks,

Hi Kim--
Yes, you're right--this is certainly your 5g-grandfather Andrew Gwin--or Gwinn.  But why is his name spelled "Gwinn" here?  I used FindAGrave.com to look for Charles Gwinn and got 112 hits.  So I reduced the criteria to a Charles Gwinn born within 25 years of 1800, and I got only two hits, one of whom had the following data and obituary.  He also lived in Baltimore, MD., a 104-mile distance from Philadelphia but went to school at Princeton, NJ, only 45 miles way.  When Andrew died in April 1838, this Charles would have been 16 years old.  Could he have served as Andrew's executor as a Princeton law student in the freshman class?  I hope you can extend your research using this data.
Charles John Morris Gwinn was born 21 Oct 1822 in Baltimore, Baltimore City Co., MD.  He died 11 Feb 1894 in Baltimore, Baltimore City Co., MD, and is buried in Green Mount Cem., in Baltimore, Baltimore City Co., MD, per FindAGrave.com's memorial for him number 35584441His obituary reads as follows:

Charles John Morris Gwinn Dead.
Ex-Attorney General Charles J. M. Gwinn died in Baltimore yesterday after a ten days' illness.  Charles J. M. Gwinn was born in October 1822.  He was graduated from Princeton College in 1840 and three years later was admitted to the bar.  He at once began the practice of law in Baltimore.  He was a member of the house of delegates in 1849 and of the state constitutional convention of 1850.  Mr. Gwinn was elected attorney general on the democratic ticket with Gov. John Lee Carroll in 1875.  He was again elected four years later and served during the administration of William T. Hamilton.
