SOURCES:
1. Nancie O'Sullivan is a friend I met on this site. Neither of us has been able to connect our lines to the the other yet. But several things--(1) the common last name (GWIN has many misspellings--just kidding, Nancie! ;-), (2) the repetition of common given names in the early generations, (3) the proximity in setting, (4) our desire to make connections, (5) and now a possible common occupation (one of my sources for Isham says he was, like Baydsen, a miller)--have pulled us together in spirit and prompted this page. For example, my John Gwin was born in Nov 1792 in Greene/Sevier Co., "western" NC (four years later this became the eastern end of the state of Tennessee). But his father, 22.00--Isham Gwin, could easily have been a sibling of Nancie's Baysden. This is pure speculation, of course, but such theories are often the root of successful research, are they not?
2. Ancestry.com has been an amazing source for images of the various original census and other documents.
3. Findagrave.com has been a wonderful source for the testimonies of graveseekers regarding the locations for, descriptions and photos of, and other addenda to the graves of the various family named herein.
4. And now Facebook.com, of all things, has become a way to bring descendants of the family members of old into the present--living cousins!
5. Wikitree.com published Mr. Bryan Sypniewski's profile on Elizabeth Baisden, presenting her to be the mother of Baysden Gwinn and the wife of John Gwinn, Baysden's father, and to have died in SC on 6 Jun 1845.

notes:
Charles Hawkins states this may not be one of
Baysden's children. But Greenville Mountaineer--is
the source for the marriage of Lewis and Lucinda. The
1860 census of Franklin Co., Ga., listed Catherine
Handback, age 92, as living with the Lewis
Gwinn family, and in the 1880 census of Franklin,
Lewis indicated his father was born in Virginia. Lewis
is reported to have moved to Franklin Co., Ga., between
1850 and 1852. Lewis and Lucinda had eight children,
three born in SC and five born in GA; the first daughter
was named Sarah after Lewis' mother.]
[In Sep 2010, Peggy Farmer writes: "I'd sure like
to know where you got Lewis Guinn married to Lucinda
Gillespie from the Greenville paper. I found
evidence of him marrying in SC all right, but certainly
not to a Gillespie. Can't guarantee it was him, but the
time and ages seemed ok. Instead, the one I find a
Lewis Gwinn married to is Lucinda Gala. South Carolina Mag. of
Ancestral Research, Vol 3, #3

To: John McDonald Gwin, jmcdgwin@zianet.comDear John,
I am responding to your web page. My name is Bill Long, and I am a descendant of Ware Long. I see that on your page you have a notation for Nancie's notes where it is mentioned "Their mother, Elizabeth, remarried a Daniel Long thought to be a son of Ware Long of Culpepper, Va. From that marriage there were several children: Seymore, Daniel, Ware, Nancy, and Elizabeth."I would be interested in corresponding with anyone who may have been a descendant of Daniel Long.
This is just to let you know that I have started a new Ware Long Ancestry Page on MyFamily.com. I have 105 mb of storage space. The space is intended for those who are researching Ware Long to share information, and in addition for the descendant lines to store photos, records, and information. It is an excellent way of electronically preserving the information and keeping it available for others.
I have much to download and only have a few things on the site right now. However, I will be shortly sending out invitations to the site, and if you are a descendant of this line or are interested in researching the line, I would like to send you an invitation. I would also be interested in contacting Nancie to invite her to the site.

Reply-To: "Jawee" <jawee@comcast.net>Nancie is my cousin. We have been tracking this family forever. When I was 9 years old my daddy became pastor of a church in the upper part of the state in SC. One day as I was exploring through the woods, I ran across a grave that had my mother's last name on it. Now I know it belonged to Baysden Gwin's wife Sarah Maddox. From that day--I am now in my dont-tell middle age--we have been looking for the history of our family. Nancy and I have found that Baysden's father's name was John Gwin who married Elizabeth Baisden in Southhampton, Va. Someone told me that they had two sons named John (Baisden?) and William. Could this John Gwin (Chesley's parents) have remarried at some point? Nannie's email is nancieo@earthlink.net. Let's keep in touch. Also in Christ, Joye McElrath Hanna

Hi, My name is Joye McElrath Hanna from South Carolina. I was looking at your web site because I am doing a family tree from John Gwin/Elizabeth Baisden line from the 1700's in Southhampton, Va to my mother who is a Gwin. It is interesting that several ancestors as well as my uncle have Chesley in their name. I have tried to find a reason but have not been sucessful. Do you have any info on the Gwin's in SC that may help. Thanks, Joye
Joye,
I'm delighted to hear from you--thanks for writing!I'm excited about the possiblities here, and I hardly know where to begin. Let's just jump right in:
First of all, I don't know what parts of the site you have had time to visit yet, so if you've already seen this, just skip it. If not, this might be very important for you. Several years ago a researcher named Nancy O'Sullavin wrote to me about her Baysden Gwin in SC. Nothing rang any bells, so I built a page for her line for her and posted the page on my site under "Unrelated (As-of-yet) Gwins". I've tried to make contact with her since, but she changed e.mail addresses and didn't tell me her new one. Anyway, here's the link to my page for her--see what you think:
http://www.zianet.com/jmcdgwin/GENEALOGY/SURNAMES/Gwin/gwinnbaysden.htm
Secondly, I have a theory about Chesley. By now you probably know where my own Chesleys' names come from: my ggggg-grandpa, Richard Gwin, married Sarah Chesley near Jamestown sometime around 1760-1770 or so. (We believe that one of the Chesley Gwins who appear in Alabama is their son and my gggg-granduncle.)
Meanwhile, Richard's and Sarah's son Isham Gwin married Mary Canterbury in Montgomery Co., VA, and eventually became my gggg-grandparents. Their son John Gwin married Jane Walker and became my ggg-grandparents, and it was one of THEIR kids, Chesley R. Gwin (we're pretty sure the R is for Richard), who is the Chesley Gwin about whom we know the most. Here's our page for him:
http://www.zianet.com/jmcdgwin/GENEALOGY/SURNAMES/Gwin/gwinChesleyR.htm
Isham and Mary had one child who MAY have been named Chesley, but we're least clear about this one. FOR SURE two of Isham's and Mary's sons--William and John--moved to Alabama. IF this third child was a son, and IF he was named Chesley, and IF he moved with William and Ggg-grandpa John, then he is one of the Chesleys in AL.
Now back to my theory: Richard and Sarah must have had other children, and one of them was probably a son named Chesley who moved south into SC. Here's one more webpage to investigate--see what you think:
http://www.zianet.com/jmcdgwin/GENEALOGY/SURNAMES/Gwin/gwinnchesleyleviniaclay.htm
I have to go now--have fun looking--let me hear from you when you've had a chance to digest some of it.
Best to you,
In Jesus,
John (Contact information:)

Reply-To: "Jawee" <jawee@comcast.net>You reference Charles Hawkins and Warrior Creek Baptist Church on the Baysden website. Warrior Creek is the church my daddy pastored for awhile. I grew up with Charles' sons when I was little. My and Nancie's grandmother, Daisey Hughes, grew up at Warrior Creek also. The Hughes/Gwin families have a long history in that area. As a matter of fact Daisy's grandfather is Chesley Hughes from Laurens Co., SC. -- Joye

Nancie, I have traced back to Baysden Gwinn. I am a descendant of his through his son John (1795-1852). Is the James B. Gwinn you listed the son of Baysden with a birthdate of about 1792? I would love any info that you have. Please e-mail me at rayboii@prodigy.net.
Thanks!
Melanie

Does anyone have any info on Baysden Gwin who
married Sarah "Sally" Maddox? He was born in SC about 1770 and died June 6, 1845. His daughter was Nancy Emma Gwin who married Starling Tucker Riddle. I can't find anything on Baysden or Sarah. Please help!
Thanks Tammy
JOYE--HI! I looked him up in the www.family search.org file and found that he was married to Sarah Sally Maddox. He had 12 children. One of which married one of my ancesters. Her name was Nancy Emma Guinn. Also I found tonight on Ancestry.com an address of a submitter for Baysden. This e-mail address is dangwin921@aol.com. He may be able to help you some. Keep me informed on Baysden's parents when you find out which John it is. Good luck! Tammy
My cousin and I have been digging for over a year and what we have come up with is that the family came from Southhampton Co., Va in the early 1700's to SC. There was a John Gwin married to Elizabeth Basden in Southhampton. In Baysden's will it list his father's name as John but no mother's name. There were 5 John Gwin's in VA around this same time so we are having a time finding out which one was ours. What info do you have on Baysden himself? Joye

I have been trying to connect my gggrandfather to Baysden for years. I have a lot of information on him, but cannot make a connection. My gg-grandfather was Thomas D. Gwin from Spartanburg S.C. I believe he was a grandson of Baysden. If any of you could help me I would be thankful.
I'm looking for info on my newly discovered GWIN line. Basden GWIN + Sarah or Sally MADDOX (daughter of John Maddox and Elizabeth ___ ) had a daughter Elizabeth GWIN who married Luke PANNELL in 1803 in SC. (Probably in Spartansburg Co. but I'm not sure of that.) Their son Christopher D. PANNELL married Sindrella (various spellings) in GA Mar 1839. I have a list of children for Basden GWIN that would indicate Sarah was still having children in her 50s. Could this be true? For Baysden the only info I have other than listed above is that he died June 06, 1845. All help appreciated! :)
Baysden GWIN would be my gggg-grandfather.

I'm not related to Baysden Gwin-Gwinn, but these three census records are believed to belong to him during the those periods.....
