Nature
seems to have inended that man
shall enjoy a season of rest in
the evening of life. In
his younger years he is full of
hope, energy, and ambition, and
later his activities are guided
by the wisdom and experience
which his former years have
brought. If his labors are
well directed, he can attain the
competence that will enable him
in the evening of life to rest
from former labor. Such
has been the record of William
S. Bartholomew, now a retired
farmer of Washington, who for
twenty-two years has made his home
in this city although he did not
dispose of his farm property
consisting of three hundred and
twenty-threee acres of land,
until about five years
ago. Since 1845 he has
made his home in Washington
County, Iowa. |
|
For his second wife, Mr.
Bartholomew chose Mrs.
Elizabeth Adams, the
widow of Moses
Adams and a daughter of
Richard
W. and Nancy (Wadkinks)
Gwin. She was
born April 20, 1845, in a little
town then called Flint Hills,
but now Burlington, Iowa.
Her father was a native of Chester,
England, and a son of William Gwin,
who was likewise born in
Chester. Coming
to America, he spent his last
days in Tennessee.
He
at
one
time
owned
a
number
of
slaves
while
living
in
the
south,
but,
becoming
convinced
that
the
practice
of
slavery was wrong, he gave his
bondsmen
their freedom. |
Wadkinks
= Watkins
Richard W. Gwin was
born in east TN; it was
Richard's grandpa or
GREAT-grandpa who was from
Europe. Isham was b.
in VA.
William
= Isham
Isham spent his last days in
Orange Co., IN, not TN.
|
His wife bore the maiden name of
Arteberry.
|
Arteberry = Canterbury |
Their son, Richard W. Gwin, came
to America when he was
fourteen
years of age and was graduated
from the college at Nashville,
Tennessee.
Prior to his marriage he removed
to Orange
Co., Indiana, and
subsequently became a resident
of Sangamon
County, Illinois,
whence he went to Des
Moines County, Iowa,
and arrived in Washington
County in 1846.
Iowa was still under territorial
government at that time, and
many sections of the state were
entirely unsettled and
unimproved. Mr. Gwin
entered a large tract of land
upon which he resided until 1856, when
he removed to Kansas,
being a resident of that state
during the troublous times which
preceded the Civil War when the
territory was a point of contest
between the pro-slavery and
antislavery parties.
Mr. Gwin was a personal friend
of John Brown, the
noted abolitionist.
|
Richard W. Gwin was
b. in what is now the Wear
Valley, Sevier Co., TN, in
1804, to Isham and Mary
(Canterbury) Gwin.
I've not seen any
indication that he ever
left the area to attend
college anywhere.
When his parents and other
family and neighbors moved
to IN btw. 1817 and 1819,
he went with them. The
data in this bio must have
come from someone
(Elizabeth?) who did not
have a clear understanding
of her parents' history.
This paragraph's timeline
seems correct.
Whether or not Richard W.
Gwin knew John Brown is
anyone's guess. It
certainly could have been
true. I don't think
that there is any attempt
in this bio to embellish
the truth, but it is clear
that some things did tend
to get mixed up between
what actually happened and
Elizabeth's understanding
of what she heard growing
up.

He
married Nancy Wadkinks, a
daughter of John
Wadkinks,
who was a native of Holland
and, on coming to America,
settled in Grayson
County, Kentucky.
He
was
a
farmer
and
a
country
minister
of
the
Hardshell
Baptist
church.
His
wife
was
Anna Bronk,
who was also born in
Holland. Their daughter,
Nancy, became the wife of
Richard Gwin, and among their
children was Mrs.
Bartholomew. The father
died at Independence,
Kansas, in 1878
at the age of eighty-two years,
while the mother passed away in
1879
at the age of eighty-one
years. They were the
parents of sixteen children, of
whom the following are living:
Jane, Sarah, Eliza, John,
Elizabeth, Caroline, Richard,
Anna, Martin Van Buren, and
Walter. By her former
marriage Mrs. Bartholomew had
three children: John
K., married Augusta Koogler
and died leaving two
children--Willa May and Albert
W.; Richard W., a resident of
Casper, Wyoming, married
Frances E. Kesler, and they
have one child, Hazel; Matta
is the wife of Grant Hampton,
living near Oskaloosa, Iowa,
and they have one daughter,
Mary D.

[John
M. Gwin Note: From
the 1880 census of Washington Co.,
IA, our John K. Adams is evidently
single (no mention of Augusta
Virginia) on 16 Jun of 1880 and
living with his parents
there. From the History
of Washington County, Iowa,
Vol.2, above, the
person we believe is his
son--Alfred W. Adams--is born in
Oct of 1881 in NM. Further,
the person we believe is his
daughter--and firstborn child--is
born in 1880 in IA! Was
John's and Augusta's a "shotgun"
wedding, thus allowing her to be
pregnant with Willa and him listed
as single in June? While
Augusta lived in English River
with her family in 1860 and 1870,
I can't find any Kooglers living
there in 1880. We're quite
certain that the rest of the data
we have on Augusta Koogler Adams
is correct, especially that she is
the widow of a John Kelsey
Adams. Finding Augusta in
1880 should answer these
questions, but we've not yet been
able to find her there. AHA.
Now we've found Augusta and her
family in 1856 in Washington
Co., Iowa (living very near
Elizabeth's sister Mary Gwin
Bear)--see above--so we know her
family was there then and that
these kids had to have grown up
together.]

The question is, Is she the same as our 26.01--Hazel N.

Subject: History
of Washington County, Iowa
This is a pretty good read, and it mentions the
Gwins and Bears that were in the county early on.
(Start on about page 294)
http://www.usgennet.org/usa/topic/historical/LightOn/1880wash_1.htm
" Between the years 1840 and 1846
there was a heavy immigration into the north part
of the county. There was probably a larger per
cent of increase in that section during that
period than in any other part of the county.
"William M. Gwin, who settled
in the vicinity of Richmond in 1843, still resides
on his original claim. He has probably lived in
the State longer than any other inhabitant of the
county, he having come to Des Moines county in
1835. Mrs.
Mary Bear, Mrs. Martha Snyder
and Mrs. Elizabeth Adams, sisters of Mr. Gwin,
are also very early settlers, they having come to
the county about the same time. Absalom Bush
settled on a claim one mile west of Richmond in
the year 1846; he says there were but three houses
in the town at that time."
Cheers!
Cousin Mike in SC
[John M. Gwin Note: Thanks, Mike! We
had next to nothing on Richard W. Gwin's
daughter Elizabeth before today!
Your e.mail gave us her married name and enabled
us to find her and her family in 1860 and other
censuses! Way to
go!
:-) And now in
2010 we found Volume 2 of this book scanned in
its entirety at GoogleBooks.com and were able to
find bios on several of Elizabeth's other
siblings!]

This is Richard's and Nancy's

we found her (in the 1860 census) and verified
her to be the daughter of Richard and Nancy,
we found Moses and her here as well.

sent in by Cousin Mike Walker--see above,
(2) her age, (3) their place of residence, and
