The updating of the numbering system used on this page has been completed. Generation 28 is my own;
27 is that of my parents; 29 is that of my children, etc.  --   John M. Gwin, May 2009

The reformatting of the name font and census data for this page has been completed. --John M. Gwin, Dec 2014

When our son Jeremy married Kara Douglas on 9 June 2006, we knew this page would soon be forthcoming.  Charity had married Beau, and the Pihlaja page became part of the tree. Sarah had married Jason, and off we went with the branch for the Johnsons. So when Sharon and I went to Albuquerque for a visit with Jeremy and Kara in March 2007, who was I to put off the inevitable? Readers, we are delighted to present to you our growing Gwin/Douglas connection!

Jeremy is a civil engineer, P.E., who worked with Parsons Brinckerhoff in Albuquerque while Kara went to the University of New Mexico School of Medicine.  She finished her years of residency in gynecology at University of Texas Medical Center on El Paso's west side, formerly Thomason Hospital.  With the El Paso move, Jeremy left PB and taught math, computer skills, and filmmaking at Mesilla Valley Christian Schools' in Las Cruces.

[John M. Gwin NOTE: The following 24.00--John/Emily Douglass family may or may not be that of our 25.00--Branch L. Douglas; however, when I searched the 1870 Virginia census for any Virginian of the right age with the given name of Branch, this 25.08--Branch L. Douglass was one of a mere handful to appear. And the fact that he has the correct last name (though spelled with two esses)] convinces me that he is indeed our target.]

Subject: Southard connection

This has nothing to do with your line, but... My great-great-grandfather was Elias Southard whom you have on your Douglas page in the census of 1870.  His son Benjamin (who was between Emily J. and William F. who married Lucy A.) was my grandfather.  It is interesting to me to find out her maiden name, possibly, and I agree with your findings, probably!  Benjamin married and had a family in Virginia; however, his oldest son moved to Oklahoma when it was Indian Country, and Benjamin followed and died in Oklahoma and is buried at Ft Sill, Oklahoma.  His wife refused to come to Oklahoma and is buried at Standardsville, VA.  My husband and I raise wheat and  cattle on my grandfather's land he got in 1903.  This is all side-family-info, but your page was interesting to me, and I had to share.   Louise Southard West]

[John M. Gwin Note:  The following post, "Tracing Vanished Flight", was found on an online forum and is copied here to assist the writer in her/his quest.]

On April 2, 1945, a B-29 with the 869th Squadron, 497th Bomb Group, AAF Serial No. 42-93883, took off from Saipan at 2100 hours as part of a large bombing mission over Tokyo. It was apparently never seen or heard from again. No trace of the plane or the crew of 11, which included Sgt. Willis Jennings Comer (he went by "Jennings") of Buena Vista, Va., was ever found, according to records. I am the nephew of Jennings Comer and am posting this in the hope that someone can offer some suggestions on trying to find information about the missing plane, or at the very least that one of the veterans who visit this site can offer up a remembrance of my uncle.

The only information ever received by my mother (Jennings' oldest sister, who still survives and still grieves) was in the form of letters from his CO, Lt. Col. Robert K. Morgan, and other Army officials, in the months and year after his disappearance and before he was officially declared KIA. Those letters state that the plane took off, as mentioned above, at 2100 hours from Saipan on 4/2/45 but was never seen again by any other crews (they were not flying in formation) and was not heard from over Tokyo (no radio contact during the mission). It was the 9th mission for the crew, captained by Lt. Edwin F. Dietzel. In one letter it is mentioned that there was a report of a plane that crashed 30 miles NW of Tokyo on that night and that a common grave containing bodies of an undertermined number of men was found, but that no ID could be made of the remains and the investigation went no further. I did request, and receive, a Missing Air Crew Report from the National Archives a couple of years ago, but it offered no further clues. I've searched many online sites but have had no luck. If anyone can offer any suggestions or tips, I'd be most grateful. Does anyone have any suggestions, for instance, on following up on the report of the grave site mentioned in the report, near Tokyo? Are there any online sources of Japanese records?

By the way, when I received the MACR from the National Archives, it included details from two other planes shot down over Tokyo that night. I guess they were part of the microfilm file.  One was of a plane with the 874th Squadron, 498th Bomb Group, captained by Lt. Carl G. Smith. Some of the crew of that flight reportedly bailed out and were taken prisoner. The other report was on a plane with the 877th Squadron, 499th Bomb Group, and the pilot was Kenneth H. Dustin. The aircraft nickname was Jug Haid II. As with my uncle's flight, there is no information at all as to what happened to that plane.

Thanks for anything anyone can offer or suggest. I have posted more info, including a photo of my uncle, at the following web site. It includes a list of the 11 crew members on that flight and excerpts from letters that Jennings wrote home from Saipan. They may be of interest to the vets from that campaign. The web site is http://www.radford.edu/~rrogers/wjcomer.html.

Warmest regards to all veterans and others associated with the 20th AAF.

I believe this to be Branch's widowed father.  Thought his and several other of the birthdates are missing, he would've been born about 1811, calculating from his listed age.

I believe this is our Shem, husband of Catherine and father of Amos. His age fits and his location fits; further, how many Shem Heatwoles can there be who match up like that? SO, IF this is he--and I'm convinced it is--we just opened up another generation! By the way, Ancestry.com mistranscribed his first name as "Shew".

We learn here that his first name is Shem. The names and ages of his family confirm that this is Kara's ggg-grandfather. Finding him here led us to him again in 1850 where we learn that his father's name is Shem as well; therefore, we'll call this one Shem Junior and his father Shem Senior.

This is the father of Amos F., from whom our line descends. As you can see from "carpinter", this enumerator doesn't spell well, so we can take the spellings of the various names with a grain of salt as well.

This is "Doug" Douglas' great-grandfather, mistranscribed as "Amos Heatwole Chapinan" by Ancestry.com. No wonder we couldn't find him! What I finally did was look at all the Amoses (I left the last name box empty) in the entire census of Central District in Rockingham Co., VA, and there he was. OK, that doesn't, however, explain why I haven't been able to find any of his siblings or parents, so I'll keep looking.

Aha, a heretofore unknown (by us) sibling of Amos: Uncle R. E.! Perhaps we'll discover his names in 1910, '20, or '30.

My transcription is incomplete--there are 3 more people in this household, whom I believe to be Gabriel's daughter and her family. Being two doors down from Cathern, I feel quite strongly that they are related; perhaps Gabriel and Cathern's deceased husband were brothers.

OBITUARY

Mrs. Nelson Elizabeth Chapman Miller was born Oct. 7, 1908. She was the daughter of the late Samuel and Maude Armentrout Chapman.
She grew up in Keezletown and graduated from Keezletown High School. Furthering her education, she later graduated from Shenandoah College with a degree in music education. Upon graduating from Shenandoah College, she went on to attend the Normal School for Women, which later turned into Madison College, otherwise James Madison University.
During her career, she taught over 300 students, some of whom went to Keezletown Elementary. Her love for music kept her teaching out of her home until the age of 95.
She was united in marriage on June 13, 1929, to Lynwood Miller, who preceded her in death. With 30 years of marriage, there were no children. Nelson was loved and cared for by her life
long and devoted friend, Dorothy K. Sites, who survives. Also surviving are close friends, Randy Sites and wife, Janet, and Maynard Sites, all of Keezletown. They were dedicated to helping with the care of Nelson as well as her farm.
She attended Keezletown United Methodist Church, where she taught Sunday school and was also the organist for many years. Nelson's lifetime was spent living in Keezletown, where she eventually became the Grand Marshall in the 1994 parade. She resided at and eventually ran the family farm, since the age of 12. Her consistent love for her animals showed true by the special names given to her geese, goats, cats, and cattle. Just days before she passed, Nelson carefully took note of her cattle. Her genuine legacy to the Keezletown area will always be present to those who knew her.
The funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 28, 2012, at the Keezletown United Methodist Church with the Rev. William M. Finley III of Blacksburg and the Rev. James Harris of Bridgewater officiating.

Research: Order of Battle

01. We started this Hartsell line with Gordon's mom, 27.02--Dorothy Jean Hartsell.

02. Her father was 26.02--Dale Milburn Hartsell, both of whom show up in the 1930 census in Fresno, CA.
03. Dale was also located in the 1920, 1910, and 1900 censuses of Cocke Co., TN.
04. When Dale appeared in the 1900 census, he was living with his parents, 25.02--William Brownlow Hartsell (age 36) and his wife Josephine.
05. The jump to 1880 presented a problem, as Will and Jo were not yet married, so we had to depend on age and location.
06. Nevertheless, there was only one William Hartsell living in Cocke Co., TN, who was age 16 in 1880: the son of 24.0--John Harrison Hartsell.
07. For 1900, a John Hartsell was the right age, living in the right place, with the right wife, and with two of the right children (only one of whose ages is right, however).
08. We uncovered John again in 1870, and again all the names of people and places aligned themselves with those in the other censuses.
09. This led us to John again--this time in 1850--with all his siblings to date and his parents: 23.0--Abraham Hartsell and wife Rebeca.

10. Then on 29 Apr 2007, Kathy Douglas loaned me the Hartsell book--The Hartsell Connection by Larry D. and Magdalene E. Fox (who attribute much of this work to the research of Mrs. Edith Richardson of Gainesville, GA, a Hartsell descendant)--that belongs to her Aunt Lorraine Smith (who had mailed it to Kathy and Gordon).
Information I've gleaned exclusively from this work appears below in this purple color.  It is far too extensive for me to copy in its entirety here, however. Aunt Lorraine, I promise to be very careful with it--thanks for sending it! I've already read through quite a bit of it and have seen that it corresponds almost perfectly with what I have already found out as listed above. I plan to make a copy of it and give it back to Kathy as quickly as possible.

Above:
Photocopy of the 1930 census taker's rendering of Juanita's name

[John M. Gwin Note: Kathy Douglas emailed me regarding the spelling of "Jaanila"; she wrote:

I think that 'Jaanila' must have come from illegible handwriting.  If the person was writing "Juanita" and the "u" looked more like an "a", and the "t" wasn't crossed, then it would look like "Jaanila."

Until then, neither of us had looked at the original record, only at Ancestry.com's mistranscription of it (above, right). At left is this original. Of course
it is Juanita, and she already knew that Gordon's aunt is Juanita, not Jaanila, but I think we have a sleuth here, folks! This is the type of thinking one has to do all the time in this hobby. Do you think Kathy has been bitten by the genealogy bug?   (:-)

Further, given the age of Ina and the marriage date of Sam and Florence, it seems likely that first wife Eliza may have died from complications in Ina's birth.]

This photo (above) is of part of one of the pages of the 14 Jun 1860 U.S. Census of Old Salem,  Dist. No. 3, Washington Co., TN, showing the residents of residence #266.

Listed are this 22.05--Delilah Hartzell Early, 65 and b. in TN, widow of Mr. Early and mother of the head of this household, 23.05--Martin L. Early, age 34 (a farmer with $3000 in real and $8000 in personal property), who is also listed with his wife Charlotte (30, nee unk.) and children: 24.01--Samuel, 8; 24.02--Delilah, 6; 24.03--Sarah, 3; and 24.04--Benj. That leaves the Augusta Johnson, 24 (whom I believe to be one and the same as the 23.08--Delilah A. Early, b. 1836, daughter of 23.08--Delilah and youngest sister of Martin); her daughter Elizabeth Johnson, 1; and her husband, George W. Johnson, 22, b. NC, none of whom can read or write.

Some Pertinent Hartsell Family Census Data:

Please note that I have listed census records here in two different formats.

First are summary transcriptions of copies of the original census records transcribed by Ancestry.com, some of which may have been mistranscribed. Because I was in a hurry at the time, I simply cut and pasted them from Ancestry.com into the places above where they best fit to at least get some of the data (names and ages) onto this page.

Second are my own transcriptions, below, of copies of the original census pages. These include more data than simply the names and ages of the parties as in the summary trancriptions. These are listed in charts with this pale yellow background. While they take longer to add, I believe they may be more valuable because of the additional information.

Ancestry.com mistranscribed his first name as "Abbas", so if you're trying to find the page from which this was transcribed, type that in instead. This is the Abraham Hartsell who appears above as #3.04--Abraham Hartsell, Jr.
I am searching every page of the census of this district to see if other Hartsells appear.

He is six years younger than Abraham and may be a brother; however, while a brother six years younger does appear in the outline, his name is Paul Anthony Hartsell. Let's continue our search of the enumeration.

William and Margaret have 10 children living in the home, all of whom are O'Dells but the three Hartsells--also listed separately below: Polly H., 20; Isaac, 18; Henry, 15; Hannah, 13; William, 11; Nancy, 8; Sarah, 10; Elizabeth, 2; Isaac H., 3; George H., 1.

Polly Hartsell

TN I speculate that Polly is the oldest daughter of Wm. and Margaret, that she married a Hartsell and bore him these two sons, that he died and left her a widow and them fatherless, and that her parents took her back in to raise her little family under their roof. Who her husband would have been is unknown; however, one possiblity exists (in that he's about the right age and his date of death is unknown): 3.09--William T. Hartsell, b. ca. 1823; d. unk.;

I'm so glad I made this search! Here is a Thomas Early, b. ca. 1797. I recognized the last name immediately from our outline. Thomas' age indicates he was born c. 1797, so he's about 22.05--Delilah Hartsell's age, and sure enough, his wife here is named Delilah!

Our 22.05--Delilah's age here is a little inconsistent with the information we have above (the data I was given indicates she was born in about 1794), but we have OFTEN seen women lie about their ages, have we not?

S.A.E. m2. ca. 1906 to Florence (nee unk., b. ca. 1873)
[John M. Gwin Note: Sam and Eliza both report in 1900 that they have been married 20 years; however, in the 1880 census, they report  the first two children (then ages 3 and 1), meaning that they must have been married at least four years earlier for a total of 24 years (in 1900). Further, given the age of Ina and the marriage date of Sam and Florence, it seems likely that Eliza may have died from complications in Ina's birth.]

On 29 Apr 2007, Kathy Douglas loaned me the Hartsell book--The Hartsell Connection by Larry D. and Magdalene E. TN/TN/TN We believe this to be our David T. Templin who will marry Susan Butler.   Granted, when I did my Ancestry.com search for "David Templin", b. 1870 in TN and lvg. in Cocke Co., TN, there were two hits, not one.  But the other was age 7, and since our David had been married 12 years already in 1900 (and would therefore have been married at age 17-18), the other would've had to have been married at age 14-15, not nearly as likely.

But here the age, name, and location are right, so here we go.

This is Susan (nee Butler) Templin, Kara's gg-grandmother. She reports here that she has survived two of her ten children. Seeing the large gap between Bertie and Edith, I speculate that the two victims (of whatever did them in) were born in approximately 1905 and 1907.

Her name here is clearly spelled Keriah.  Mr. Butler is not listed here, but the age of her youngest daughter pretty much tells us that he died after she was concieved and before this census.

CANNOT READ OR WRITE TN/TN/TN I'm not sure her name is Keziah anymore. Everyone keeps writing the beginning of the last syllable with an ar sound, and I think that may be her name: Kezirah.  Regardless, we know who she is: the widow of Susan's father.  We just don't know who he is yet.  Perhaps one more census back will do it.

This is Keziah's oldest child and Susan Butler Templin's brother; he appears in 1870 at age 13 and in 1880 at age 23. He's been married here for 8 years, making his marriage in about 1892.

If son Joseph is as old as this report says, then this Mary's age must be THIRTY-eight, not 28; further, since this couple have only been married 8 years, she is clearly wife number two if not three.

What I had originally thought to be his middle initial "H" turned out to be, under closer scrutiny, the numeral 4 (part of "f4" [family of four]) overwritten by a census analyst at a later time.
