Subject: Bassetts
Paul, I have added you on to begin receiving the free monthly Bassett
newsletter. You should have received a copy earlier today.
As for information on George Bassett, my information confirms what the
Gwin site has and was found in a memoir of Sarah Bassett. She was the
only surviving child of George Bassett of Yorkshire, England. You
can see a copy of the cover and a small write up on this from the
December 2005 newsletter.
http://www.bassettbranches.org/newsletters/2005/20051218/20051218.shtml
Finally, here is what I currently have in my records about this line of
the family. It should contain most of everything that everyone else
has. We used results of DNA testing to confirm placement of the #68
Alfred Bassett family as seen in today's newsletter.
Information on your branch of the family would be much appreciated.
Jeffrey Bassett

about 1849 in Brooklyn, Kings County,
New York, married Jane
Susanna Snewin on 22 Oct 1833 in Broadwater
by Worthing, Sussex,

ERROR in Birthdate as Lewis Bassett below is shown Christened on
February 27, 1814. Biologically impossible for same mother to
give birth to two children in 7 months. More likely born c.1808 as he
is shown as age 28 in the Manifest of the Ship “Cordova” which sailed
in 1836. Hence 1836 minus 28 = 1808. His younger brother
Louis is shown as age 22 on the same ship’s Manifest which therefore
coincides with his birth date of 1814 (1836 minus 22).
Consequently it is most likely that Louis, rather then James, was born
in 1814.

53B16. Louis Lavalette Basset - born 27 Feb 1814, married Sarah Gwin.
Possible ERROR in Birthday as Christening is also shown as February 27,

BIOGRAPHY: Robert and Sarah Jordan were both listed as School Teachers
in various UK Censuses. They were associated with schools in
Worthing, Sussex; Thornbury, Gloucestershire; Cardiff, Glamorganshire
(Wales); Norwich, Norfolk. In his earlier years Robert is
thought to have been a lay preacher at the Congregational Church in
Montague Street, Worthing, Sussex, UK. The 1881 UK Census for
Middlesex shows him as age 65 and a patient in St. George’s
Hospital. The same Census for Sussex shows Sarah living in
Worthing as “Head of Household” as a “retired Schoolteacher”.
Also shown living with her in her household are her brother “Henry”
(handicapped from birth) and her son James T (a gardener, age
29).

53B2. George Basset, son of Jean Jacques Luis Basset
George Basset, son of Jean Jacques Luis and
Mary (Lavalette) Basset, was born 15 Jan 1768. He was christened 2 Feb
1768 in Saint Martin Coney Street, York, Yorkshire, England. He married
Sarah Jarmy about 1793.
They emigrated to Philadelphia,
Pennsylvania about 1794.
53B21. Sarah Jarmy Bassett - died 28 Jan
1819 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. (ERROR death date conflict)
"53B21" suggests the daughter
of George Francis Basset "53B2". If so, she could not have
died Jan 28, 1819 as she was still alive in 1848 to
write her Memoir referred to below. This date of death therefore
cannot apply to her, nor can it apply to her mother,
Sarah Jarmy, since the Memoir states below that "In the year
of 1798, the awful scourge of the yellow fever broke out in
Philadelphia" and that “ both G.F. Bassett and his wife, fell
victims to this disease”
From the Memoir of Sarah J. Bassett, 1848, published in Philadelphia,
we have the following: Her mother, Sarah Jarmy, was of respectable
family in Ipswich, England, and her father, George Francis Bassett, was
a silversmith of Yorkshire. Arrived in Philadelphia, young and
inexperienced, and not being furnished with suitable letters, they
found themselves strangers indeed in a strange land, and having
expended their little means they were soon reduced to a state of great
destitution. A few benevolent individuals who had become acquainted
with their situation, relieved their immediate necessities, and before
long succeeded in procuring employment for the husband......In the year
of 1798, the awful scourge of the yellow fever broke out in
Philadelphia, and spread fearfulness and desolation through all ranks
of society. Among many others, both G.F. Bassett and his wife, fell
victims to this disease.
QUESTIONS. When and where was Sarah J. Bassett born? Did she
emigrate with her parents or was she born in the US? What
happened to her after both her parents apparently died in the yellow
fever outbreak of 1798? Does her 1848 Memoir answer any of these
questions? Where can we obtain a copy of this?

Wednesday, 1 Apr 1885
Died. Bassett. Tuesday evening, at 6 o'clock, at the residence of Mr.
C.C. McCulloch, on Columbus Street, of asthma: Mrs. Sarah Bassett, aged
59 years.
Mrs. Bassett has resided in Waco for the past twenty-five years, and no
one was more honored and esteemed. Loved by every one who knew her,
made life worth living, but when the angel of death hovered over her
and the Christian spirit took its flight home to the God she
worshipped, she calmly and peacefully slept. A gloom will be cast over
her large circle of friends when it is learned that this aged lady is
no more, but they will all know that such a true woman as she has
always shown herself to be, is now at rest. Mrs. B.'s husband died many
years ago, and she leaves one child, a daughter, Mrs. C.C. McCulloch,
with whom she lived at the time of her death.
The funeral will take place at 4 o'clock this afternoon from St. Paul's
church, Rev. Francis R. Starr, officiating. Interment in Oakwood
Cemetery.

Biographical Sketch
C.C. McCulloch, Mayor of the city of Waco, was born in St. Clair
county, Missouri, in 1841, the eighth of a family of nine children.
His father, W.H. McCulloch, was born in Virginia in 1790, and emigrated
to Missouri at a very early day. He was at one time Clerk of St. Clair
county, and was a soldier in the war of 1812, attaining the rank of
Captain. He was married to Miss Mary Carter, of Virginia, and reared a
large family, on ly four of whom are living at the present time.
C.C., the subject of this notice, received his education in a private
school in Rockbridge county, Virginia, and at the tender age of
thirteen, began to experience the responsibilities of life. He began
his business career as a merchant's clerk, and from the age of
seventeen to nineteen he tried his hand at agricultural pursuits,
tilling the soil and raising live-stock. At this time the war between
the North and the South arose, when all industries were abendoned. He
enlisted in the Secon Missouri Cavalry as Brigade Adjutant, and
participated in all the important battles of the Trans-Mississippi
department north of Louisiana. In the later part of 1863 he left the
service on accounty of ill health, but was afterward attached to the
Ordnance Department. He was at Shreveport, Louisiana, when the war
closed and peace was dedicated.
Mr. McCulloch came directly to Waco and embarked in the mercantile
business. From 1867 to 1869 he was in the employ of Sherman Brothers,
of New York city, a large hardware firm. In April 1886, he was elected
Alderman of Waco, for the First Ward, and re-elected in 1888. In 1890,
he was elected Mayor, and re-elected in 1892, and is now serving his
second term in that position. During his term as Mayor great advances
have been made in the improvement of the city. The City Hall has been
built, the streets have been paved, the suspension bridge has been
purchased from the stockholders, and sewage lines have been laid. He is
a warm friend of the public-shcool system, and has in every possible
way aided and encouraged educational enterprises.
In 1867, Mayor McCulloch was married to Miss Emma Bassett of Alabama,
and they are the parents of ten (10) children, seven of whom are now
living, namedly: C.C. Jr., is a graduate of the University of Virginia,
in the literary and medical departments, and is now Assistant Surgeon
of the United States Army at Fort Sam Houston, San Antonio, Texas. He
is regarded as one of the best educated men of his age in the country,
and probably holds as many college degrees any man of his age in the
United States. His record in the past has been, indeed, remarkable. For
his wife, he married Miss Letta, a daughter of D.R. Gurly, of Waco.
Mayor McCulloch's second child is Sallie, a graduate of the St. Louis
Conservatory of Musch, who completed her musical education in New York
city. The other children are Roy, Louis, Adele, Shirley and Grace. The
family belong to the Episcopal Church.
The Mayor is a member of the Masonic order, Waco Lodge, No. 92, and the
Knights of Phtyias, Crown Lodge, No. 77.
The McCulloch House, Waco, Texas
The Architecture: The original house consisted of a two-room structure.
The house was enlarged to its present two-story Greek Revival house
made of local pink brick. There was a dependency: a detached kitchen to
the north of the original structure that was incorporated into the main
building when the house was enlarged.
The Families: Dr. Josiah H. Caldwell, a Waco physician, and his wife
built the house in 1866. Mr. and Mrs. Champe Carter McCulloch purchased
the house in 1872. Mr. McCulloch was a prominent Wacoan. He was a local
merchant who made frequent trips to New York to buy merchandise for
other Waco merchants. He served as Mayor for about 11 years. He and his
wife, Emma, had ten children. The last descendant, a daughter-in-law,
lived in the house until 1971.
Emma Bassett, later to become Mrs. McCulloch, was brought to Waco from
Corsicana, Texas, by buggy, to teach piano and penmanship at the Waco
University when the teacher of those subjects left for the Civil War.
Mr. McCulloch was a staunch Episcopalian and served as senior warden
when the church was in South Waco as well as when it moved across from
his residence at 4th Street and Columbus Avenue. One son, Louis Bassett
McCulloch, lived in the McCulloch residence until he died.
