John and David,
I don't know just where to begin...
First, is David a desc. of Ida Basset and William Gwin?

My great grandmother was Emma Basset Benton Veidt Nitschke.  I'm a generation closer to Emma Basset, et al due to the fact that my Mother didn't have me until she was 41, and my dad's mother didn't have him until she was 42.

I have done extensive research on the Bassets with CLUES left to me by my Dad's first cousin (deceased), Hillare Nitschke, Attorney, of Austin, TX who corresponded
with both Edith Snow of Washington, DC and Champe McCulloch of Waco, TX during the 1920's.  I have most of his work.  I found that NOT all the Basset info they passed on is correct.  I even hired a professional genealogist who does Sussex Co. England research to pull some records (Christenings, marriages) for me.

Where do you live?  I live in Houston, TX

I have written an article on the Basset family of Dallas Co.,AL for the Dallas Co. Heritage Book.  There is still time to get your Gwin info. in as deadline for submitting an article on your family is Aug. 31st.  I can snail mail you particulars or go to www.usgenweb.com
then Dallas Co. and info should be there on the Dallas Co. Heritage Book committee, etc.  You could even write an article for the book on the family of Ida Basset, etc.

Beside the info from England on the Bassets, I've found Edith Snow's papers on the Darby and Basset families in the Gray Family Papers at the VA Historical Society.  I managed to get copies of all her work on the Darbys and Bassets.  I've also found 2 "live" cousins who are desc. of Charlotte Basset who married Frederick Cheeseman.  They didn't even know of the Bassets.  By the way, the original spelling was Basset,
but Bassett has been used by clerks, census takers,
some family members.

I've also have info from the Alabama State Archives for land records for Bassets, Cheesemans, from Old Cahaba.

One question, do either of you know anything about a
snuff box which supposedly was in the position of
Kate L. Gwin of Tuscaloosa, AL at one time?  It
supposedly was given to JJL Basset by a scientific
society?  I need the info that might be engraved on
that box to pursue research in England.

Have not found any "live" McCulloch "cousins" yet, have either of you?

Question, info I had from Hillare Nitschke is that
there had been a brother in Brooklyn, NY that the
family in TX and AL had "lost site of"-a James Basset.
Is the James L. Basset age 6 born New York the
son of the brother James, or son of Louis and Sarah
Basset?

Here's the household #62-62 on the 1850 Matagorda Co.,TX 1850 census:

Louis Bassit (Basht on the index to the 1850 census) age 36 male, grocery keeper, b. Eng.
Sarah age 24 female born Ala
Emma M. age 7 female born Ala (she married Col. Champe McCulloch, SR.)
James L. age 6 male born New York

Maybe Hillare and family got some of the bro and sis
confused????? as have not been able to find this
bro or family in Brooklyn in 1830, 1840, 1850's.

I am presently 1st VP (Membership Chair) of Clayton Library Friends.  We are the support group for Clayton Library here in Houston.  Clayton is the 4th largest Genealogical Library in US.  If anything happens to me, look for my "stuff" here (I've threaten my kids).

This position as well as my duties of "Angel" Chair, keep me hopping.

Thanks for contacting me "Cuz",
Elizabeth Nitschke Hicks

By the way, my address is

746 Edgebrook Dr., Houston, TX 77034-2030.  What's yours?

Here are some Alabama marriage records that you may/may
not have:  They come from the "Early Marriages of
Alabama" multi volume set done by Family Adventures,
PO Box 290354, San Antonio, TX 78280-1754.  This
multi vol set costs $1175, and are at Clayton Library.

Basset/Bassett:
Basset, Joseph L. to Mrs. L.C. Blann Sept. 1, 1847   Dallas Co.,AL
Basset, Joseph L. to Ann Gwin Jan. 19, 1843 Dallas Co., AL
Louis Basset (of the 1850 Matagorda Co., TX census) to Sarah Gwin 18 Mar 1841 Dallas Co., AL
Emma M. Basset Benton Veidt (widow of John P. Veidt) to Carl Ludwig Nitschke 23 Oct 1854 Sumter Co., AL

You mentioned the papers of Kate Gwin on your
website, do you know where her papers are?  I
checked the Tuscaloosa P. Lib., and Wm. P. Hoole
special coll. at U of Ala some years back (without
luck).  Soon as I can dig up some of my info., I'll
send that, but snail mail probably will be better.

John,
I'm going to do my best not to overwhelm you with
info.  But here goes....

Found this query in the Central AL Gen. Soc. quarterly
Vol 18 no. 1, 1992 (by the way this society abstracts
and publishes Dallas Co.,AL info., dues $20/yr)
PO Box 125, Selma, AL 36702-0125.

"William Gwin of Wilsonville, Shelby Co.,AL married Rosanna (R.C.J.) Wilson in Dallas Co., AL 5-13-1842.  Both buried Wilsonville cem. They were in dallas co. in 1850, Bibb Co in 1860 and Shelby co. in 1870.  He was the son of John Gwin of Dallas co.  John Gwin was living in the household of William Gwin in the 1870's and died there in 1877, buried Wilsonville Cem.  Rosanna Gwin was a daughter of Nathaniel B. Wilson of Dallas Co. who died there in 1875.  William and Rosanna Gwin had a son who married Ida Eliza Bassett who was born in England and both are buried in the Wilsonville Cemetery.  William and Ida Bassett had three sons, James B., John W., and William S.  I would like to contact their descendants.   My g.g. grandmother was Mary B. Wilson and wife of Isom Gwin, mother of Mary Jane Gwin, wife of Wm. J. Smith of Dallas Co.,AL.  My g. grdpts, Mary B. Wilson Gwin and Rosanna Wilson Gwin were sisters.  They were the daughters of Nathaniel B. Wilson that was in Dallas Co. ca. 1820 and died there in 1875.

I have no proof but I believe that Isom Gwin and Wm.
Gwin were brothers and the sons of John Gwin who
lived around Orrville, AL and Old Cahaba in the 1850-
60's in Dallas Co., AL....." Roy L. Smith, 205 McCurdy,
Crowley, TX 76036.

I wrote to Mr. Smith about a year ago, and his widow
was kind enough to reply.  I did NOT ask her what
happened to his research on the Gwin/Guins.  Thought
you might be interested.  In case you do not know,
you will have to consider variant spellings of Guin/
Gwin.  Liz Hicks erootrot@usa.net

John,
I'm sending this info and you can "correct" or add
as you see fit.

My great grandmother, Emma Maria Basset Nitschke
born Mary 13, 1825, died Oct 21, 1873
had following children:
l.  Catherine Matilda born Sept. 14, 1855, died
same day
2.  Emma Margaret born Oct 30, 1856 Austin, Travis
Co.,TX married May 5, 1877 George A. Isherwood
Emma M. Nitschke Isherwood died 6-21-1938 buried
Oakwood Cem.,Austin, Travis Co.,TX
3. Alice Theresa born Oct. 2, 1858 Austin, TX
married 8-8-1876 Mathew Clarkson.  She died 1-26-1910
buried Oakwood Cem.
4.  James Bassett born July 1, 1860 Bull Creek, Travis
Co.,TX(near Austin), married Alice Hilliare 12-19-1883
he died 10-29-1929, buried Oakwood Cem.
5.  Aileen Isabel "Lena" born 1-9-1863 Fiskville, TX
(near Austin), married 11-10-1880 Albert Schute.
She died 4-24-1905 buried Oakwood Cem.
6.  Robert Edward born 3-16-1866 Austin, TX
married 12-11-1890 Elizabeth Anna Helen Richter
Both are buried in new section of Oakwood Cem.,Austin,TX
He was police chief of Austin, TX during 1920's.
He was my grandfather.  Their children:  Lula Mae
Nitschke m. William F. Devine; Robert E. Nitschke, Jr.
married Williard Griffith (great granddaughter of
Susanna Dickinson Hannig, the lady Santa Anna let out
of the Alamo to go tell what had happened), and
my dad, Herbert C. Nitschke.

Only 2 first cousins of my dad and myself are living.
I am an only grandchild and only child.

Emma Basset Nitschke, my great grandmother, was the
sister to your William Basset, father of Ida Eliza
Basset Gwin.  Therefore, I believe Emma Basset Nitschke
was Ida's aunt.

Some puzzles:
Emma Maria Basset born MaY 13, 1824 was christened
in Broadwater, England June 20, 1824.  Christening
record states daughter of James and Mary Basset of
Worthing, England (milkman).  The "milkman" conflicts
with fam. info. as have James Basset was a "draper"
gentlemen's tailor.

Also, marriage record from England-William Basset
and Harriett Bowley married by banns, Broadwater,
1-22-1837.  Harriett baptised 8-6-1821 Clymping, Eng.
daughter of Edmund and Kitty Bowley.

Charlotte Cheeseman born 7-21-l806 Eng. died 10-4-1876
Matagorda Co.,TX m. at Preston (near Brighton), Eng.
9-19-1830, Frederick Cheeseman, both of this parish,
witnesses:  James Basset(t) & Mary Cheeseman

On Frederick Cheeseman's tombstone has born Horsham,
England died 11-8-1866 age 59 years.

Snuff box- according to Edith Snow's papers from
VA Historical Society..."His brother [William Basset's]
came to New York and left children.  We do not know who
they were.  He was a secretary in some Institute of
Science in Worthing, England.  When he left for America,
was present with a silver snuff-box.  He left it to
his namesake, Uncle Jim Basset.  Peter Gwin has it
now."  Maybe you can check with some of Peter Gwin's
desc. and be SURE they understand WE DON'T WANT THE
SNUFF BOX, JUST THE INFORMATION/INSCRIPTION so I can
try to follow up on in England.  Some people get real
nervous when "cousins" go looking for family heirlooms
such as bibles, etc.

By the way, I have a picture of my great grandmother,
Emma Basset Nitschke born 1824 taken in 1854, also
picture of William Basset's tombstone in the new
cemetery at Old Cahaba, near Selma, Dallas Co.,AL.
I'll see if can get copied if you want.

The Episcopal church they belonged to in Old Cahaba
was moved to near Orrville, AL and was still standing
as of 1997.

I'll try and get some info. copied and mailed to you.
I would like to have copies of your uncle's research
or info.  I'll try and narrow this request down after
I study the info. I printed from your website.

Oh, Mary Ann Basset, daughter of William and Harriett
Basset, married 11-15-1881 R.D. (Robert) Boykin in
Dallas Co.,AL.  Best, Liz Hicks erootrot@usa.net

JOhn,
Here's what I'd like to get from you:
Under Jean Jacques Luis "James" Basset-
your have on your website 3.l James Basset m.
Susannah Snewin.  3.4 George Basset died in Texas
fighting Indians.  53B15 William Basset m. Harriet
Taylor.  This is an error, should be Bowley from
research I had Helen Whittle do.  She is a prof. gen.
in England.  3.7 Sarah m. Robert Jordan.  3.13
Charles Basset 3.14 Robert Basset-don't you think
Robert and Charles are the same person?
For references 3.l, 3.4, and 3.7 I would like copies
of where this info comes from.

I snail mailed you some info today 7/11.  More to
follow as soon as I can get copies.  "Cuz" Liz

John,
I've confused you.  I know William Basset was a tailor.
And all the info. Jeffrey Bassett has he got from me.
I've found out more info since I corresponded with him.
He just collects info on Bassetts.  The tailor
reference I was remarking about is that the father
of William Basset, James was supposed to have been a
tailor (English term is Draper) too, but the christening
record of Emma Maria Basset (my great grandmother) shows
his occupation as milkman.  This is James Basset, NOT
his son, William Basset who married Harriet Bowley.

Sure who like to know how the name of the wife
of son, James Basset was found?  Also, where did
info regarding George Basset coming to Texas come from?
I guess what I'm asking is to have copies of the info
you got this from.

I'll try and get you the pictures you requested.
I have a picture of the church from Old cahaba, but
it is from a book.  The church was moved from Old
Cahaba due to floods to Orrville.  Best, Liz

Oh, I see.  Hmmm.  I had/have NOTHING beyond what you've just told me on
the profession of JJamesLBasset.  Well, if you have the christening
record that says MILKMAN, what evidence do you have that he was a DRAPER?
As I said, I've heard nothing either way.

Wish I could.  The most I can tell you is that I got it from Uncle James,
who said he got it from--well, here, let me just cut and paste from my
webpage:

"Compiled by James Basset Gwin II of 2918 45 St New Orleans 20, LA in the
year 1949 from records submitted from the collections of Kate L. Gwin,
Tuscaloosa Al, and Edith Snow, Washington, DC.  Information obtained from
Major Champ Carter McCullough who employed genealogists to trace this
ancestry."

Does that help?

Hey, your snail mail arrived today!  Thanks for the goodies, Liz.  The
maps are really interesting, especially when one sees just how close the
Bassets were to France--Worthing is right on the coast, just across the
channel.  Quite frankly, Worthing looks more like dairy country than
where I would imagine a tailor would make his living--in an urban area.
But then, hey, look at middle Alabama in the 1850's!

Whew! Those books are expensive.  I must not be really bitten by the
genealogy bug yet--no way I want to spend that much.  Maybe it's really
because I have 3 kids in college.  But if I can write the article, I will.

Your library sounds very impressive.  Maybe I'll get to use it someday.
Where do you get the time to do all this stuff?

Thanks again--I'll talk to you later.  Oh, btw, I added your comment,
your contribution, and my two--no, three, now--sources to my Basset
webpage if you'd like to take another look.

Best to you,

In Jesus,
John

John,
I'm going to do my best to copy some additional info
for you at work this afternoon!  I did find picture
of St Lukes Episcopal church which was moved from
Old Cahaba to Orrville, and copies of one of Emma
Maria Basset and (3) hubby-C.L. Nitschke, and of
the tombstone of William Basset in the New Cemetery
at Old Cahaba.  The State of Al is working hard on
this as it is a state archelogy site.  I'll have to
tell you the story of my first trip there and how
my husband and I found the place.  This was BEFORE
the state starting working on it as a historical site.
It was the first state Capitol of Alabama.  But the
story will have to wait.

I'll also send you what I have from the VA Historical
Society of Edith Snow's papers re Basset and Darby/Derby.

The nice thing about those Al Co Heritage books is one
can submit article(s) FREE and not have to order book
to get it in!!  I learned long ago to make a birthday
and Christmas list for our two kids.

I work afternoons as a bookkeeper for an engineer.  I've
worked for this guy for 20 years.  My husband is a
computer consultant (designs industrial software) for
firm from Norway.  Don't laugh, but I'm doing well to
use email!  Later, Liz
