Return to Genealogy Home Page   --   Return to Basset Main Page

The updating of the numbering system used on this page has been completed. Generation 28 is my own;
27 is that of my parents; 29 is that of my children, etc.  --   John M. Gwin, May 2009

The reformatting of the name font and census data for this page has been completed. --John M. Gwin, Aug 2011

SOURCES:

1.  My first source of info for all this page is my father's older brother, James Bassett Gwin II.  Page 46 is entitled BASSET FAMILY HISTORY and starts out:

"Compiled by James Basset Gwin II of 2918 45 St New Orleans 20, LA in the year 1949 from records submitted from the collections of Kate L. Gwin Tuscaloosa Al, and Edith Snow, Washington, DC.  Information obtained from Major Champ Carter McCullough who employed genealogists to trace this ancestry. "
2.  My second source is Mr. Jeffrey Neil Bassett, Jnbassett@aol.com, who saw my page and sent me information he said came from Elizabeth Nitschke Hicks.  I cut his info apart and added each piece where it was applicable.  Thus each note preceded by JB/ENH came from him.  We've not yet discovered how we are related, if at all.

3.  My third source is Ms. Elizabeth (Liz) Nitschke Hicks herself , erootrot@usa.net , generation 26 below, my third cousin once removed.

4.  And now my fourth source is Ms. Margaret Johanna Bond Graham, graham7111@cox.net, generation 27 below, my 4th cousin.

22.00--[Georges] Basset; m. Madamoselle Lavalette; 2 sons.  This from Uncle James' papers, but evidently "Georges" (James said it's pronounced zhur-WAH) is misinformation, as Liz has the copy of the marriage license (transcribed immediately below).
JB/ENH notes:
53B. Jean Jacques Luis Basset m. Mary Lavalette on 20 Aug 1767 in Christchurch, Yorkshire, England.

Liz Hicks sent me a photocopy of the old 1767 marriage license.  I transcribe it here with typeset words in boldface type and handwritten words in italic type.  The five signatures are also underlined.

"Banns of Marriage ____No. 93 Jean Jaques Basset ofthis Parish Watchmaker and Mary Lavalette of the Parish of Saint Saviour were Married in this Church by Licence this twentieth Day of August in the Year One Thousand Seven Hundred and Sixty Seven by me E. Willan, Vicar. This Marriage was solemnized between Us JJBasset  Marie Lavalette In the Presence of Joseph Leivers Rose Bottlion"

JB/ENH notes:

Introducing
Mr. and Mrs. Carl Ludwig Nitschke!

She is the former
Emily Maria "Emma" Basset
and widow first of Sir George Benton
and next of John P. Veidt.
Mr. Nitschke is a widower and cabinet maker.
They are making their home in Gainsesville, Alabama.

Emma and Carl are my (John M. Gwin's) great-great-grandauntand uncle.  (She is the sister of my g-g-grandpa William Basset.) The photo, taken for their wedding on 23 Oct 1854 in Sumter Co., AL, was sent in by my third cousin-once-removed Liz Nitschke Hicks, who reports that after the city of Gainesville, AL, burned, Carl and Emma moved to Austin, Travis Co., TX, where they lived the remainder of their lives, they and many of their family being buried in Oakwood Cemetery there.  Thanks, Liz, for making this photo available to family!

And now meet Emma's and Carl's families:

* 53B1B. Emily Maria Basset, daughter of James and Mary (Miles) Bassett, was born 20 Jun 1824 in Brighton, Sussex Co., England. She died in 1873 in Travis Co., Texas. George and her infant son died of typhoid fever and she went to live with her brother in New York then to her brother in Alabama. She married her second and third husbands in Alabama. Carl was a cabinet maker. After the town of Gainesville, Alabama, burned, they left and went to Austin, Travis Co., Texas. [John M.. Gwin Note--26 Oct 2019:  The following obituary is posted to David, Sr.'s dignitymemorial.com page.  David, Sr.'s first wife, Diane, is my own fourth cousin, so David Jr. and his siblings are my own fourth cousins once removed, and their children are my own fourth cousins twice removed.  Perhaps David, Sr., then, would be my former fourth cousin-in-law?]

David Thomas Davenport, Sr., 71, passed away on Saturday, January 4, 2014 in Austin, Texas following a lengthy illness.
David was born in Dallas, Texas on March 23, 1942 to Joubert Lum Davenport and Frances Collins Davenport. He attended Highland Park High School in Dallas, Texas and then the University of Texas at Austin where he received a B.A. in Business Administration in 1964. David was a proud, life-long member of Beta Theta Pi Fraternity. After college, David was employed by the Austin National Bank and quickly rose to become Executive Vice President, a career he enjoyed for many years. He then was the President of National Bank of Texas. David formed Texas Protax Austin and served as President of the company until his retirement in 2012.
David was civically minded and contributed his talents and guidance to many organizations over the years. He served as Chairman of the Austin Redevelopment Authority, President of The Austin Multiple Sclerosis Society, President of the City of Austin Downtown Unlimited, President of the City of Austin Community Unity Council, Advisory Council to the University of Texas School of Nursing, Vice President of the Austin Natural Science Center and Advisor to the Texas Beta Theta Pi Fraternity Student Aid Fund. He was a member of Westwood Country Club and served on its Board of Directors as Treasurer.  David was a long-time member of the Admirals Club of Austin where he also served as Treasurer.
David was an avid outdoorsman and will be remembered by many good friends who shared his passion for hunting and fishing. He loved watching sports and keeping up to date on world news and politics.  He was known for his beautiful singing voice and would belt into song when some of his favorite "oldies" were played.  He loved traveling and seeing the world and  especially loved going on cruise ship vacations with his wife Barbara.
David is survived by his wife Barbara, daughter Casey Davenport, son Bill Davenport and daughter-in-law Leslie and their three sons, Wilder, Jack, and Whit Davenport.  He is also survived by his stepsons Dell Boykin and his wife Angie and their daughters Kaitlyn and Brooke; Michael Boykin and his wife, Amy and their children, Luke, Marley, Josie, and James; and his brother-in-law and sister-in-law Michael and Yvonne Brenan.  David was preceded in death by his parents, his brother Robert Davenport, and his son David Davenport, Jr.
Funeral services will be Wednesday, January 8, 2014. A family graveside service at Austin Memorial Park will be followed by a 1:00 p.m. memorial service at Covenant Presbyterian Church.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions in David's name be made to Helping Hand Home for Children, the Austin Humane Society, or the charity of your choice.

[John M.. Gwin Note--26 Oct 2019:  The following obituary--possibly from an undocumented newspaper--is posted to David's good FindAGrave memorial.  David and his siblings are my own fourth cousins once removed.]
David Thomas Davenport, Jr., 39, passed away on Sunday, August 9, 2009, surrounded by his loving family after a long and valiant battle with cancer.
David was born in Austin, Texas. He attended Westlake High School before going to Abilene Christian University in Abilene, Texas where he was a member of the Wildcats football team.
David channeled his love for cuisine and cooking into his job as researcher for the nationally syndicated newspaper food and travel column, America a la Carte, and because he had a special place in his heart for handicapped children, he also worked in the field of Recreational Therapy. David was loved by all who knew him for his innate goodness, tender heart, and larger-than-life personality.
David, whose strong faith in God and love for his family will be remembered by all, was a member of Covenant Presbyterian Church, and it was God's grace that gave David strength in knowing His presence is eternally strong.
David is survived by his parents, Diane and Jim Howard and David and Barbara Davenport; grandmother, Alice Ann Nitschke Wilder Cornwell; sister, Casey Davenport; brother and sister-in-law, Bill and Leslie Davenport and their sons, Wilder, Jack and Whit; and uncle, Hilliare Wilder of Sullivan, New Hampshire.
The family gives heartfelt thanks to M.D. Anderson Cancer and Hospice Austin.
Funeral services will be Wednesday, August 12, 2009. A family graveside service at Austin Memorial Park will be followed by an 11:00 a.m. memorial service at Covenant Presbyterian Church. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions in David's name be made to the Helping Hand Home for Children, M.D. Anderson, or the charity of your choice. John - So glad to "meet" you .  I must tell you I am totally overwhelmed--after years of looking for relatives to have finally made connection with some is just too fantastic.  You've got to understand - that is been so-o-o-o frustrating because my husband has been finding relatives and ancestors for years under every rock and around every corner and I have never had any luck.
So this past week I have been jumping for joy with the new information I got from Anita Johnson with the German-Texas Society.
I also descend through Emma Basset - I would be her gg-granddaughter, I think, so whatever that makes us--. I think Liz & I are a generation apart, but actually very close to the same age. I don't have any information on the Bassets at all, so of course I don't show William. I thought I would dash off a response to you before I started delving into your web page, etc.
I didn't see where Liz had sent you my information:
    Johanna Graham (Mrs. William)
[private]
    and you have my email.
Thanks SO MUCH for writing - looking forward to meeting you --
Johanna

Ok John, those worked. To say the least.  I am totally impressed - probably a bit confused too since I have so little information; and what little I have is simply word of mouth from my Mother.
Let me see if I can spell out where I "fit in:"

[deleted here--transcribed above]

I'm confused about Emma -The only info I have from my Mother is that Emma came over from...was very sick on the ship and when she got better she found her husband (?? Bassett??) dead and her valuables gone. I have a decorated wooden broach that supposedly was the only piece of jewelry that was not taken and that was because she was wearing it......??

I also have several "spelling" errors in names due to what my Mother remembered...so your information is very much appreciated. Mother also told the tale about Mary Miles being related to "Lafayette" .
Boy!  Emma Marie sure had a busy year in 1854!  What happened to Sir Benton?  Also, why the different birth dates for Emma Maria Bassett ( born May 13, 1825 --per grave marker) and notes on 53B1B show birth date of Jun 20 1924? Liz's notes give birthdate of May 13, 1824 - is the grave marker just wrong?

Boy, this is all mind boggling!
Thanks- Johanna
