[John M. Gwin COMMENTS]
5Oct 1818William Rufus KingSampson Co., NC1610William Rufus King was the Vice-president of the United States, ifonly for a brief period.  A neighbor of John and Jane Gwin,it was for him that their son, William Gwin, named his own son:RufusKing Gwin.
8Jan 1819James Bell Dallas Co., Ala. Terr.169This person could be related to the Bell family of Orrville, one ofwhom--Mary Frances Elizabeth "Fanny" Bell--married John and Jane'syoungest son, Chesley, in 1850.
1712 Jan 1819William Given [Gwin]Dallas Co., Ala. Terr.157William Given is, no doubt, a mistranscriptionof William Gwin, for several reasons: (1) there are no other Givens inDallas Co. at this time; (2) there are two other purchase records for WilliamGwin; and (3) it happens to me all the time. I believe this to be the olderbrotherof John Gwin for several reasons: the Jan. 1819 purchases for bothare in the same Township/Range squares; they're both about the same agesand have big families about the same ages (from the 1830Dallas Co. Census); John has a son named William who was likely namedfor his uncle, etc.

10Jan 1819John GwinShelby Co., Ala. Terr.157John Gwin must be my ggg-grandpa who marriedJane Walker in Blount Co., TN, on 8 Apr 1812 and whose son, Isom, was bornin AL on 17 Mar 1817.  He is recorded here as living in Shelby Co.,though we've seen no other records to indicate this. However, when Isom'sgrave was discovered in July of 2004, this quote from the tombstonelends support to their living elsewhere: The deceased was a native ofthis state and was raised from an infant in this county. It is a shamethat the Section numbers were not also recorded here; nevertheless, itis possible to narrow down the purchase area using the data provided.TownshipFifteen Range Seven is a six-mile square of 36 Sections starting,to the best of my calculations, from the SE corner of Perry County's southernpanhandle exactly six miles due south to approximately the midpoint betweenthe towns of Alberta and Gastonburg in Marengo County; thence due eastsix miles to a point slightly NE of the midpoint between the towns of CobbsQuarters and Crumptonia in Dallas County; thence north to a point almostexactly four miles west of Orrville and one-half mile SW of Martin Station;thence due west to the starting point.  The Jefferson Davis Highwayenters this Township 15/Range 7 six-mile square at approximately its NEcorner and exits it Approximately at its SW corner.

2803 DEC 1821JOHN GWINE1/2NW1/43116N8E80.00285According to my calculations, this 80-acre plot of land abuts the 160-acreplot of land he purchased ten years later (see 2 lines below) and is situatedca. a mile northwest of Martin Station and just north of the CSX Railroadline; it is also east of Wesbrook and south of Eleanor; it is also ca.7 miles west-northwest of Orrville.
8823 May 1831John GwinDallas Co.169John Gwin is here purchasing land in Cahaba.TownshipSixteen Range Nine includes the town of Cahaba, and this is wherewe know that John Gwin purchased land.
2830 NOV 1831JOHN GWINSW1/43016N8E159.757807According to my calculations, this 160-acre plot of land abuts the80-acre plot of land he purchased ten years earlier (see 2 lines above)and is situated ca. a mile northwest of Martin Station and just north ofthe CSX Railroad line; it is also east of Wesbrook and south of Eleanor;it is also ca. 7 miles west-northwest of Orrville.
4730 NOV 1831JOHN GWINE1/2NW1/43516N9E79.887808According to my calculations,
6905 AUG 1834JOHN GWINSW1/4NE1/41415N10E40.1312610here can be no doubt that this John Gwin and the below John Guinn areone and the same person.  According to my calculations, this 40-acreplot of land abuts the 40-acre plot of land he purchased a month later, the two forming an 80-acre plot comprising the east one-half of the northeastquarter of section 14 of township 15N-range 10E (see line immediately below). It is located ca. 6-7 miles southeast of Cahaba on the east side of andperhaps abutting the hamlet of Mt. Nebo.
6904 SEP 1834JOHN GUINNNW1/4NE1/41415N10E40.1314833There can be no doubt that this John Guinn and the above John Gwinare one and the same person.  According to my calculations, this 40-acreplot of land abuts the 40-acre plot of land he purchased a month earlier, the two forming an 80-acre plot comprising the east one-half of the northeastquarter of section 14 of township 15N-range 10E (see line immediately above). It is located ca. 6-7 miles southeast of Cahaba on the east side of andperhaps abutting the hamlet of Mt. 1006 Oct 1832 Chesley R. Guinn Wilcox Co. 20 9Chesley R. Guinn must be another brotherof John Gwin, again for several reasons:  Chesley is the maidenname of John's paternal grandmother; John's son, also named ChesleyR. Gwin, (no small coincidence if they're NOT related!) is too youngto own land, being only four years old on this purchase date; John's sonmust have been named for his uncle; etc.

This land is located in what is now NE Perry Countynear the hamlets of Cleveland Mills and Theo, somewhat NE of Sprott, likelyin the Talledega National Forest.

1236 Nov 1835 Nathaniel B. Wilson Dallas Co. 16 8My ggg-grandfather, Nathaniel Burdine Wilson, owned this land in the township/range which is roughly in the Orrville/Salem/BogueChitto area and west of Cahaba.
1274 Jan 1836 Drury H. Roark Dallas Co. 16 8Husband of John and Jane's second child, Mary Gwin, the only childof which marriage was Walter Roark who would die at Gettysburg.
1918 Sep 1851 Jeremiah Lister Dallas Co. This is tailor "Jere" Lister, the business partner of one ofthe Basset brothers, both of whom lived "over the point" in Cahaba. Oneof the Lister daughters would marry one of the sons of Fred Cheesman whomarried Mr. Basset's sister.
